I was up in north Alabama for '92. We got snowed in for almost a week, lots of poker by firelight to pass the time. We were up in the foothills of the Appalachians so lots of very steep hills to sled down after we pulled the hoods off some cars from the local junkyard to use as sleds. I slammed one of those into a pine tree at the bottom of a ~70 degree incline going somewhere north of 20mph and went flying into a snowbank. Only my youthful good luck preventing injury or death. Good times!

I guarantee that person's tires were slipping like crazy at the top of that hill and they had no idea what to do so they just kept flooring it until the engine literally caught on fire. People have actually died that way because nobody knows what to do when they get stuck.

Yeah it was like... perfect shitstorm conditions. They're not complete strangers to snow in that area, but it's one of those temperate regions where nobody owns snow chains and there's maybe two plows for the whole city. Usually the snow drops overnight and everyone stays home for a few days and it's fine, that's your big storm for the season. That particular day, there was like four inches of snow in the middle of the day, nobody knows how to drive in snowy conditions and everyone was panicking. I walked home that day and I made better progress than the bus I usually took. People were abandoning their cars at the side of the road, it was a loving mess.

lol just had a drain pipe freeze IN my house. its in exterior facing wall for about 18 inches. The rest is “buried below the frost line”. place was built in 2016 to local code and pipes were buried accordingly. not enough now bitch! called a plumber who cranked it for an hour and couldn’t make a dent. so no plumbing for me for a while! e: funny thing, I am in the lower 48 and it is 50F colder here than currently is in canadas arctic circle.

Hooplah posted:no one in minnesota has snow chains and we manage A lot of people in Southern states run summer tires all year long. All season tires are also poo poo in snow, but summer tires are useless and straight up death traps if you've got no experience in snow. Add overconfidence from AWD and traction control systems and it's going to be a disaster.

Honky Mao posted:Big rubber needs to be destroyed so we can invent tires that don't suck rear end We actually already have Sufficiently Advanced Tire Technology, they're just expensive and will cost you maybe 1 mpg on the highway so OEM car manufacturers don't sell cars with them mounted: https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tires/michelin-crossclimate2 https://www.goodyear.com/en_US/tires/assurance-weatherready/13859.html The secret sauce is a high treadwear compound that also works across a much wider temperature range than conventional "all seasons" plus a tread pattern that clears water and can grip snow. Unless you're going off road or have a sports car that you will be performance driving, I don't know why you'd use anything else unless you're cost engineering your cars and/or trying to game fuel economy or range ratings by putting poo poo low rolling resistance tires on.

Does this thread have a weather app recommendation for Android phones (not sure if iphone/android matters but just in case)? I have "Hyperlocal Weather" and I dunno but it just seems mediocre. Wondering if there's a more accurate forecasting app out there.

It's not on the Play store, but Fdroid has it and I think you can manually install the APK if you want to.
