Nearly all of them still wrapped in plastic with the included CD. A friend and I went around to several RadioShacks in the IN/OH/KY tri-state area trying to collect as many of them as possible. Why? gently caress if I know... We were huge nerds. My friend did end up doing the plain-text mod on several and selling them online. Ended up with both versions, the USB and PS/2 pass-through varieties. I messed around with using a plain-text modified one for cataloging the huge DVD collection I had at the time. They are a cheap LED/photodiode based scanner, and don't remember them particularly good at actually scanning.

If you were using a scanner enough to fiddle with a cuecat you could just buy a new rechargeable 3 way (USB cable/USB wireless dongle/Bluetooth) barcode scanner that will be much easier to work with than a cuecat and can link to your PC / phone etc.. You can get them for around $25 new https://a.co/d/apaVnLb I picked one up for scanning serial number barcodes to inventory ewaste computers at my work and it works great. They even have miniature keychain sized ones for $18 open box and $10 used. https://a.co/d/0sgFNJn

I do like the Motorola/Symbol/Zebra scanners we use at work, but I have a suspicion they're not $60 better than the generic ones anymore.

Anyone stan Apollo workstations around here? I ended up – through no fault of my own – with a 68030 processor card and a Token Ring (also Apollo, not IBM) card for a 400 series HP/Apollo. It's a 16 bit ISA card, so may technically work in a PC as well. Will get pictures later. The processor card is pretty unusual, it's a 68030 at 50 MHz with FPU, but it's designed to fit a 68040 socket so there's this massive card with CPU pins on one end. Apparently the 400 series was designed for the 68040 but had to go to market before the 68040 was generally available. So they made this emulator assembly with tons of glue logic and PAL's to ship in the mean time. I have it since I guess the original owner bought one of those then later bought the 68040 upgrade kit and left the original card in the box. Token Ring system is interesting, it uses a 15 pin D-Sub shell contact with two coax inserts, with a very strange bayonet plug on the wall end (looks like a lamp socket). I think the wall box had switches in it to bypass the outlet until something was plugged in. There's also relays on the controller card that probably bypasses the card when powered off. I guess Apollo didn't want to bother with building Multistation Access Units like IBM did for their system.

Yeah the D-Sub looks standard, it's coaxes on either side with a couple of signal pins in the middle. The wall side is the weird bit. There's a low resolution picture of the cable here: https://www.computerhistory.org/collections/catalog/X1166.94B Bitsavers has archived a description of the system at least! http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/apollo/010005-00_Apollo_Token_Ring_Media_Access_Control_Layer_and_Physical_Layer_Protocols_Oct87.pdf

Collateral Damage posted:Thrifting is a miserable experience, so it makes sense in context. Yeah, for every week you find an interesting thing there’s two weeks where there’s absolutely nothing but trash. He is correct, though—Savers/ValueVillage has always had a better hit rate for me when it comes to electronics and doodads because of the pegboard plastic bags and the fact that they still put out computers. Goodwill can still have interesting stuff if they do a good job curating a handpicked section, but this is highly variable depending on the store. The golden age of tech thrifting (at least, for the stuff most of us would be interested in I bet) was probably 2010-2016. Most of the time when it comes to thrifting it’s me posting some photos with a friend going “they’re asking HOW MUCH for this?” or “Oh, check out this weird thing.” You get the same vibes scrolling through CL/FBM except you get the addition of “NO LOWBALLERS I KNOW WHAT I HAVE.” So yeah, you get a little jaded/snarky after a while when you’re used to your local shops. When I was in the Seattle area last year I actually visited some of the stores he put in that video, so it was a nice trip down memory lane. Speaking of relics I recently made a video about an old boat anchor I bought because I was working on a different video: An IBM PS/2 Model 80. I’ll get right to installing OS/2 on it, I swear! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFZeSaMBnZw kefkafloyd has a new favorite as of 22:34 on Jan 20, 2024 |

You may get lucky but it's very unlikely anymore.

And the worthwhile stuff that does stay in the stores is often priced higher than it would cost to buy new, even clothing and in-print books. These days I have the best luck by going to the sketchiest looking pawn shops I can find.

Amiga demos are great for their bit plane masking tricks that you don't really see in contemporary PC demos because the hardware is so different. State of the Art might be the best example of it.

Shopgoodwill doesn’t have anything sourced from New England except for one store in Maine. And yes, they often have prices that are out of whack. But at least in my region there’s still one or two stores that sometimes manage to have something interesting now and again. Which are all dwarfed by other Goodwills that are full of trash. You definitely won’t find old computers though, they’ve been doing “recycling partnerships.” Barf.

(Some might have good music. Many don't.) Of course they're not works of art, they're masterpieces.
