when I moved back to chicago from socal there were 3 foods I'd been craving & couldn't find as good outside of chicago: italian beef, gyros & chicago-style hotdogs & skin-on fries. I think I ate all 3 the first week I was back. but in the intervening decade the italian beef has been that overprocessed & non-tasty (except salty) frozen & thawed crap, and p. much same for the gyros meat; you've gotta make sure to go to one of those restaurants with the rack of lamb that they slice in front of you these days to not get the bad stuff. even though mexican food had gotten better in chicago it's not the same as l.a. (cheap, plentiful & gooood) so from a food standpoint I didn't come out ahead with the switch.

the mexican food trucks here are all $8/each tacos & $20 burritos so gently caress that noise; meanwhile, you can still get a burrito the size of a swaddled baby in l.a. for $7. even mexican fast food like el pollo loco was decent there.
