Quote-Unquote posted:lol this reminds me of a thread on here many years ago (I wanna say mid-2000s) where there was some brand of security camera that was connected to the internet and had literally no authentication to access it by default. If I remember right, people found shitloads of these cameras via port scanning. You could just pop the IP into your browser and gain full control of the camera, including swivel, tilt and zoom. It was a matter of just trying different ones until you found an unsecured one. A whole bunch of office workers got terrorised by the security cameras going berzerk. I was playing around one time and found some type of camera in a Japanese comic shop. I started to swivel around and scan my new surroundings. I noticed someone sort of glance up and motion at the camera. Then they ignored me. So as im checking out my new digs the cashier comes up, grabs the camera, and calmly walks me back to the storage area where I was unceremoniously placed on the shelf facing backwards. Fission mailed

Discord search is garbage because you can't specify that you want the just the word you searched for. If you search for train it'll also give you results for trained or training and it drives me mad.

The ultimate problem with discord search is that that let’s say that I’m working on one of my old Volvo station wagons and I’m encountering a problem, well right now I plug my query into google and it checks every car forum, regular forum and tweet. Nothing about discord is indexed and every bit of information is unique to every server, I have no way to search every automotive discord or even a Volvo related discord externally. So much information about so many different hobbies is being walled off in a way that can’t be preserved and that’s what I’m really concerned about

I am glad there still seems to be lots of specialist forums out there for interests like that, or in my case old Saabs. Also I tried to register once with discord and an AI told me I was banned for life with no chance of appeal. That's the sum total of my discord experience.

My current around town driver is a 91 Volvo 760 Turbo sedan I bought from an old couple in El Monte California that had been parked and rotting a little in a garage with only 80k on it. I don’t think you really see many of the sedans anymore, just the wagons? Only needed some new struts and a head gasket. These cars are definitely an example of how things got shittier, they’re so easy to work on compared to everything modern (I love my more recent Camry but it is nothing like the 760) Surprise appearance from one of the planes I fly, a Viking Dragonfly homebuilt, in the back right

I have noticed Google Play Store has started showing adds that contains an install button when you open an app page to install it, so if you are careless it's super easy to press the first install button you see, except you're installing some random software from an ad, not the actual thing you were trying to install. This is like malware level behaviour.

I want a 4Runner real bad but until there’s a hybrid I won’t touch it. I wouldn’t mind a Saab 900 convertible if I had the garage space so the Arizona sun doesn’t wreck the top, and that is unfortunately a common thing with any older convertible

I only use discord as a chat room and sometimes voice chat. I am under no illusion that it is anything but those. I see Steam pages advertising the game's discord and I'm just like.... uh no, that sounds awful. I don't want to chat with people. I just want questions answered. I'll just search their forums or the steam community.

Aside from Discord being awful for finding useful information, it also serves to make social forums actively worse. There's a forum I've been going to for going on 20 years and ever since Discord has become popular it has driven the vast majority of toxic drama on there. You get these splinter groups of cliquey posters who gossip with and about each other and then bring that pettiness back to the main board. The mods have actually done a good job this past year in reigning in a lot of that through bans on particularly offensive people who still posted like it was 2004, but there's still issues where their friends will relay information back to their Discord groups so those banned users still have an influence on the discourse. On top of that even the "good" posters get into their own groups so a lot of topics end up being filled with incomprehensible in-jokes that clog up the boards. It's part of the reason I've moved over to SA more and more even though that place still has a place in my heart.
