I really don't like Flannagan much but Dr. Sleep was awesome imo. I could really take or leave his TV shows.

I thought Dr. Sleep was pretty cool but it relies a lot on nostalgia for The Shining (which I have).

Good excuse for me to rewatch The Shining before I give Sleep another try...not that I need refreshing but really, watching that movie is just like a nice glass of milk (with booze in it).

It's partially Shining nostalgia, but I also think his style lends itself to movies better than TV shows. The TV shows always have good stuff in them but are way too self indulgent imo. I think the limitations of the runtime are part of why I like it.

A little disrespect and rudeness can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day
The extra runtime on the directors cut really helps Dr Sleep imo. It’s still far from a perfect movie but it feels a lot more cohesive.

I think I like the Dr.Sleep movie more than the book, and the book is pretty good. The changes that were made for the movie make sense and act as a bridge between King and Kubrick's story. I also think it's corny as gently caress, which all good Stephen King adaptations should be.

Peaky Blinders. I’ve tried episode 1 about 3 times now and I just can’t finish it. Am I missing out on prestige looking tv?

No. My wife and I have been trying to watch the show for like 8 years and we are currently on episode 2 of season 4. We keep coming back to it when we are struggling to find anything else to watch, but it just isn't all that compelling of a show for us. I think Cillian Murphy's acting is the highlight of the show.

My wife compared it to Sons of Anarchy, which I think is apt. They have a lot of the same narrative beats, Peaky Blinders just takes place about 100 years earlier and putting subtitles on is necessary for me to understand what is being said half the time.

Edit: Oh, and Tom Hardy shows up to reprise his Bane voice for a little bit.

Adding to the consensus here; you’re not missing out on that much. It gets REALLY formulaic too - oh no how are they going to get out of this complicated disaster this season! Well, luckily there’s an insane reveal in the last episode that Cillian Murphy has been playing 4D chess the entire time and has outmaneuvered everyone.

I think I watched the first three seasons before I had enough. If S1 doesn’t grab you, it doesn’t get better.

I liked it more than the original but it’s a lot more “funny” than the understated humor in the original (not as funny, sry). The free love euro tour guide lady bouncing off Julia Dreyfus’ character made me laugh a lot. Actually there was a lot of culture clash humor. Will Ferrell managed to toe the line between unbearable cringe and slapstick. And it has Zach woods

Watched the finale last night and it had me giggling like a maniac at several points. Highly entertaining.

Also absolutely loved the finales for both Fargo and The Curse, been a good couple of weeks of tv.

was really hoping for a light fluffy movie so we put on Self Reliance on Hulu and it stunk!! felt like an overlong I Think You Should Leave sketch (not just because Biff Wiff was in it) and had a shaggy dog ending that felt in no way deserved. Boo!

Flatliners is on Hulu. A group of med students, curious about near-death experiences, cross the ultimate line--the flat line. It isn't a best picture candidate, but it's still fun to watch. In hindsight, it looks uncannily like Joel Schumacher's audition to direct the next Batman movie, which he ended up doing.

I also felt like it was reminiscent of a long ITYSL sketch, but I found it pretty enjoyable. A bit of Lynch and Eternal Sunshine influences mixed in as well. I would say that the writing was a little weak at points.

Flatliners was used in a film class I took in the 90s to demonstrate how egregious the trend of cutting Letterboxed films into "Pan and scan" for home release. You missed SO MUCH with 4:3, they just butchered it

the writing not trusting itself drove me nuts. instead of letting the audience understand that he seems crazy and his family is worried his family will more or less verbatim say "you seem crazy. we're worried" while standing in a line in front of him like a sitcom set.

I guess I can see that as lynchian and eerie, but i dunno, didn't seem intentional.

Uncharted is on Hulu. It’s better than I expected but had very low expectations. Felt like a lot of the action set pieces were straight from the game but then it turns out most of it was new for the movie which is weird. Actual location shooting in Barcelona which was nice to see. Bad ragdoll VFX all over the place.

If you want a little pleasant fluffy half hour adult animated comedy show, I suggest Digman! The whole first season is streaming on piece of crap Paramount+

Andy Samberg voices an over the hill Indiana Jones type figure who gets into wacky adventures. There's some pretty surprising guest voices throughout the season.

It's the right ratio on Hulu, I think. I have winced at pan and scan since before I knew exactly what it was, and I don't remember any. There's some awesome set pieces off to the sides, in the flatline chamber in particular, that you'd miss. What the hell is the glove wall for

e the pan and scan version of The Matrix cuts out a bunch of appearances of the city phone book early on in the movie, before he wakes up. I remembered them from when I saw it in theaters and wanted to pause on them and take a closer look at them. Nope. I think it's all correct on streaming services, though. It's a little clue that the whole world is just the one nameless city (and the mountains you see in the sequel, I guess)

They mention Heathrow airport in the first movie so I don't think the mega city is the only thing in the world, but it's machine central i think.

Ha, you're right, it's one of the news articles about Morpheus open on Neo's screen before Trinity contacts him. The human population presumably isn't as large as it used to be, so I figured they could only populate one city, along with the phone book and bits of dialogue mentioning "the highway" and "the mountains," not specific places.

Speaking of movies about digital fantasy lands I recently watched Vanilla Sky after hearing bad things about it forever and it's more just kind of mediocre than truly awful, like a forgettable Twilight Zone episode that's a little too long and happens to star A-list actors.
