Constant misses, long recharge times on spells, and it gets even hairier with an elite at the end of the mission.

I had the same issues on my psi/cold corruptor until 22 when I got IOs slotted then it became somewhat easier. He's still wildly fragile but the missing got a lot better.

But really, Corruptor or Defender? They both seem so similar. (which makes sense I guess, given they were original Hero/Villain versions of eachother).

They have very similar performance at the end of the day. I generally play Defender but it really matters very little, or not at all in a practical sense.

the game in general is doodoo solo for pretty much all characters although it becomes reasonable for practically all melee types, less for ranged, although sentinels are fine since they all have CC protection as part of their tools for every power combo. you *can* play corruptor or defender solo if you *really* want to but they really are not made for this. that power combo is among the less fun options (no self CC protection) but not the worst. dominator/controller can reasonably solo due to strong CC powers available from the start but they are never super fast at killing stuff compared to practically anything else.

the big exception is masterminds, they are almost made for soloing and tend to give you a much better experience at it.

e: if you're playing a support AT like defender, corruptor, or controller you will do so much better in a team it's just a dramatically different (better) experience. you don't need to have a bunch of expensive poo poo slotted to play on a team either, you'll be fine.

*Any* class can solo. However, beginners shouldn't try to solo with a defender, controller, dominator, or low level mastermind.

yeah you can, it's just a lot more dangerous and/or slower with the pure ranged/support classes. it does get better later though, granted.

e: I mean, there should be some limits on stuff that is genuinely pornographic or obscene or whatever, but "hat doesn't look quite right on this hair" is definitely in Who Gives A poo poo land

So on the one hand, it's probable that the HC team is a little overly conservative when it comes to avoiding minor clipping. But on the other hand, in the realm of just giving everyone everything, pieces need to be individually rigged per body type to not look completely broken and atrocious. In fact, that's probably another reason why Paragon originally kept making gender-locked stuff, because making one male/huge outfit and one female outfit was less work than making everything in triplicate.

I think most players assume it's like how you can already get some clipping if you layer a ton of stuff together and/or do certain emotes in bulkier looks. But in reality bad clipping is more like female character's tits sticking straight through chest plates (okay admittedly maybe some folks wouldn't mind that either) or gloves disappearing inside Huge hands entirely or your character ending up with random see-through holes in their body where stuff doesn't line up properly. To me that's a pretty fair line to not want to cross.

I do also find your example kinda funny because the concept of separate hats and hair isn't even a thing, and has been one of the most annoying limitations of the costume creator since day 1. :v:

I'm actually very familiar with the work required in this context and I can tell you with complete certainty that the time/labor for fitting hats/hair between genders for this type of model is small enough that it could not have been a factor, and the difficulty of refitting a hat/hair is low enough that I am certain it could be made to look OK with minimal effort. It might be more difficult today just depending on the import tools they've gotten working (although if they've gotten stuff like sunglasses in and fitting properly it sounds like that's not a problem any more) but when the game was live, that was a plain old managerial decision I am very sure.

I can't tell if I'm not following what you're talking about at this point or you're not following what I'm talking about.

With the time/labor cost stuff I was referring mostly to complete costume sets and the overall decision making around costume packs and such, not arbitrary bits and pieces. Assuming it's a choice between 1 bespoke male/huge outfit and 1 bespoke female outfit vs. 2 shared outfits across all three body types, the latter is surely more work. Maybe not vastly more work, but if you're trying to cut corners it's one way to do it. That's...also a managerial decision.

Hats/hair, I was just poking fun at the fact that under regular circumstances you'd never actually be able to complain about hat A not being compatible with hair X because you literally can't mix and match those two things together to begin with. The only way it would happen is if they let you combine the existing full hair styles directly with the existing hats...but uh, that's literally the exact sort of thing I'm talking about where the overwhelming majority of those pieces will not go together in a way that is usable or appealing to anyone, so HC wouldn't bother.

John Murdoch

I can tune a fish.
I mean the correct and proper way to do it has always been to remove all of the baked-in "half hair" from all hat pieces and then create a new sub category within the Hats tab featuring properly coverted/tweaked/chopped down/whatever half hair pieces that can match to any hat.

Which would be a giant pain in the rear end and incredibly unglamorous work despite fixing one of the oldest and most awkward quirks of the costume editor, probably yet another reason why Paragon never bothered giving it a shot.

Either that or the people who might've been able to do it had already been shuffled over to that loving MOBA. :cripes:

I was just thinking about the same thing the other day for some random figment of a character idea that never fully bloomed.

Off the top of my head I think you'd need to rely on one of the chest detail pieces to get anything with shoulder straps.that would also layer over top other stuff, but they're all armor so it's gonna look weird no matter what.

Edit: Taking a look, the Samurai Do color matched appropriately is probably the way to go.

I am holding a live frag grenade.
I rode to level cap solo doing standard mission as a Fire/Rad corrupter, the AoE debuff toggles for damage/res and defense/ToHit were awesome. The only trouble I ever had was absurdly over-leveled enemies at the end of some mission lines like AVs, and even then the debuffs usually gave me an actual chance against them that I wouldn't have had otherwise. It just took forever to burn down their ridiculous HP pools.

Excelsior LFG chat is like a nonstop barrage of groups in the evenings/primetime and that includes a lot of WST/Tinpex/occasional KM ITF. You can transfer 5 times every 3 days anyway so you may as well give it a shot and just transfer back if it's not worth it for you.

What a childish tactic!
Don't you think you should put more thought into your battleplan?!

After starting up a few characters and playing them to level 4-6 (not a lot, I know) I finally settled on one I think I'm gonna concentrate on. A Fire Blast/Energy Aura Sentinel (the flames look pretty neat when colored bright blue/yellow). I feel like a need a better name than "(The) Stardiva" but drat are good, unclaimed names are hard, and I'm too proud/vain to do a slight spelling variation of an already claimed name.

Not especially satisfied with the modern/"cinematic" outfit, but I'm about to hit level 10 so I figured I should knock out a few alt costumes while its still free. I mostly want to try to do classical Golden/Silverage aesthetics as the main look for my characters. Also drat is it hard to find boots for lady heroes that don't have obnoxiously high heels. Being able to fight in those must be a superpower in itself.

[Edit] just got absolutely bodied by a guy named Frostfire and some nasty minions doing contact jobs in the Hollows. Is this perhaps meant to be done as a team? That was a lot of nooks. I think I’ve heard this guy’s name come up before but I figured it was an endgame Task Force where the guy comes back or something.

Either way a good sign to go to bed…

Fun Shoe
Frostfire is well known because he dates back to very early CoH and I think was the first "Elite Boss" (the tier between "Boss" and "Archvillain") rank enemy? Running his arc in the Hollows used to be the standard trip you made in the early levels. He was originally designed to be done as a team although the general power creep over the years means that he is soloable depending on your AT/powersets.

S.D.
Apr 28, 2008
They adjusted things so that he downgrades to a 'regular' boss, but that mainly means he's got the same amount of HP as a boss mob of his level - he's still real dangerous because of holds and the ability to summon a fire imp or two.

I imagine it hasn't been changed, so it's more that it's another control on an already control-heavy set that's on a long recharge timer. Still useful solo, less so on teams because outgoing damage is now higher and faster (which sort of devalues control as a support in general).
