Again, don’t get me wrong, I think they have actively decided NOT to pursue this subplot, but there’s a Chekov’s Gun when you’ve got a C’tan that turns up on Medusa, gets drowned by a Primarch who gets covered in Necron Oooooooze, suddenly gets a load of linkages to the Mechanicus on Mars, and there’s that ONE PRIMARCH who makes his way in his story specifically from Medusa to Mars.

Again, it’s dead now with the Pariah subplot, but, I definitely think this was the way they were considering going, pre-HH.

Some goons are both deathly afraid of spoilers for a story that has been known for 30 years, and at the same time pathologically unable to avoid clicking on clearly marked spoiler tags. Which, fine, whatever, everybody has their incredibly cringe weaknesses, not a big deal.

But then those same goons feel the urge to loudly proclaim their weakness to the world, and let everybody know that wherever the dreaded SPOILERS are being posted, masked or not, those scandalous grounds shall not be blessed by their august presence anymore.

The Dark King died in the last book when Emps shed that aspect of himself upon reuniting with Ollanius, and Horus mentions it only as a failed gambit by the Dark Gods.

I'll do a proper write up later today when I have the time to sit down and not phone post but suffice to say I was very satisfied with how the book ended.

Something that is never born never has a beginning or an ending. It just *is*.

So my write up for Vol 3 is back. Read or don't read.

So, the book starts with a three chapter interlude, each focused on a different Primarch: Guilliman, Perturabo, and Lorgar. Guilliman is readying to enter the Solar Realm but without the light of the Astronomican the fleet is flying blind. Suddenly they see the ship register for Vengeful Spirit. And then another. And another. and Another. The entire solar system is getting swallowed up into the Warp focal point centered around the ship and everything is becoming the Vengeful Spirit.

Perturabo says "gently caress you all" and withdraws from Terra. He smashes around his warship throwing a tantrum while convincing himself of his own rightness. Then he resigns himself to watching the events unfold on TV/datastream because he can't really go anywhere in good time while time and space no longer exist.

Lorgar is chilling on a planet 14 months away from Terra where the locals practice all different forms of prophecy divination, and hears word that an Angel has fallen.

PART 9:
Dorn speaks with Actae not knowing if she's friend or foe, and she tells him his brother his dead and Horus has won. He decides to confront Horus anyways and gives Actae his seal of authority, ordering her to get the word out. He sets off across the Inevitable City using Actae's directions.

With Sanguinius's death, a psychic shockwave goes off for all who can hear it. Abnett compares it to a nail bomb exploding into the psyche. Every single Blood Angel is immediately affected by the Black Rage and all hell breaks loose. Raldoron's marines break ranks and go on the rampage. Fafnir Rann is attacked by Azkaellon and gets into a very funny four way battle trying not to kill him while two World Eaters join in who really, really want to kill him. He's saved by Zephon who is affected by the Black Rage but isn't mindless, and he considers it might be because there's not enough of himself left to feel the rage as strongly as his brothers. Nassir Amit goes blind with madness.

Inside the world created by the Vengeful Spirit, Valdor goes on a tear through the Sons of Horus for control of a crashed Orbital Plate before getting pinned by Sycar's blade, leading him to instead smash people with his fists rather than his spear. Erebus and Abaddon watch and Erebus gives Abby a brief taste of warp power to go and fight Constantin. When Valdor's spear connects with Abby he sees the next ten thousand years of bloodshed and freaks the hell out, dropping his blade and continuing to fight barehanded until gravity flips and Valdor and the other Custodes are tossed into the sky. Eventually, Dorn arrives and aids the Custodes in a battle against a Word Bearer/Abaddon-led contingent, but they're interrupted by Raldoron's homicidal Blood Angels. Dorn and Valdor make for the eye of a storm atop a crater where the bridge of the Vengeful Spirit lies.

Sigismund leads the Seconds out across a desert, escorting Keeler's 2-million strong column of refugees. Siggy launches an attack against a Death Guard brigade moving to intercept them, and then Keeler rallies the refugees to follow her and attack the Death Guard as well, causing the DG to withdraw into a canyon where they are gunned down by the Dark Angels, led by Corswain and Adophel. Spacetime has folded in on itself and the desert is suddenly right next to the Hollow Mountain, where the Dark Angels are trying to relight the Astronomican. The Death Guard are besieging the mountain, so Siggy deploys his Seconds to assist in the defence. Meanwhile an Angels Librarian named Cypher works alongside Zhi-Meng to try and relight the beacon, and they discover that Keeler's sermons to her refugee column are helping to stabilize the harmonics of the Astronomican.

Vulkan believes Malcador to be dead and sets himself towards prepping the Palace's self destruct system. Malcador is still alive within the flames but he is so far gone that Vulkan can no longer hear him.

Amon defends the Sigilite's Retreat just as Fo completes his Astartes-killing bioweapon. With no word from the outside world, Amon authorizes its use, but before he can deploy the weapon, Hassan and the surviving Sisters of Silence and Custodes arrive, countermanding his authority. Fo has made a run for it, slashing out Xanthus's throat and melting Andromeda-17's body with a spray bottle virus, but Amon manages to kill him before he can flee.

Olly and Grammaticus receive coordinates from Actae and make a final cut in the materia using the Athame dagger, now fixed since their encounter with Emps. Actae falls through another warp gate from her hiding place in the Inevitable City and is picked up by Agathe and Phikes from the 403rd. They're currently holed up in a blackstone prison. Actae realizes she has merged with Katt and assumes Katt's full name Katerina Moriana. She realizes that with the laws of the warp no longer operating properly, the psychic dampening properties of blackstone can be reversed, and she uses the prison walls as a resonator to get a message out calling for all surviving loyalists to stand and fight. The Emperor Must Live.

Inside the Vengeful Spirit, Emps cuts a swathe through the Neverborn, followed by Loken, Dusk and Leetu. They arrive at the Luperal Court where they find Sanguinius's body. Then Horus arrives.

Almost the entire fight between Horus and Emps is told from Horus's 2nd Person POV. He realizes that Emps isn't talking to him, but to the Chaos Gods, telling them that they have killed his son. Horus strikes down the Emperor with a single blow. From there, reality breaks entirely. There's a 22-page long battle sequence where Horus and the Emperor's duel rages from the physical space aboard the Vengeful Spirit into a war of psychic wounds with the two of them projecting across space and time to harm each other with memories of battles across all of time, from Cthonia to Cadia and everywhere in between. Horus wins many fights, slaying the Emperor, and Emps wins just as many. Finally, the world of physical and psychic battles breaks down and becomes even more abstract, with the last major conflict coming down to a game of Tarot Cards.

I swear to god Abnett must have watched the Text to Speech video where Emps played Yu-Gi-Oh! against Little Kitten. Either way, Horus wins with the stronger deck and catches Emps as he's trying to break down the Silver Door, crushing him and winning. The Emperor dies. His remaining tarot cards fall out: The Guardsman, The Throne, The Space Marine, The Knight of Mandatio, The Lantern, and Revelation.

During this, Loken, Leetu and Dusk all witness the duel in their own way, kinda similar to how Abnett toyed with Warp perception in Anarch when Milo, Mkoll and Holofurnace all saw different aspects of Sek. Dusk and Leetu only witness the battle in a way their perception allows, but Loken witnesses everything in flashes, watching as every Aspect of the Emperor is snuffed out one by one. A vision of Malcador appears before Loken and ignites his sword, giving him a torch to light his way across unreality and find his way back.

PART 10:

Ahriman discusses the origin of Neverborn with Sindermann and Mauer, explaining that Daemons are never actually born, but are created by an adverse reaction in real space, an act of such extreme atrocity that it creates a resonance within the Warp. And since time has stopped working, there's never really an indication of when a Neverborn is made, only that it now is. Ahriman's Tarot keeps coming up nonstop as Daemon, Daemon, Daemon.

Horus drags Emps to an empty throne seat, planning to let Emps live at his side and gently caress the Dark Gods. Emps uses this to get close to Horus and saps power from him to unleash another Aspect of War and renew the fight, but Horus beats him down once again and hammers him to the Throne with spikes. Dusk arrives and the Emperor speaks through him to hold off Horus, and then dies, obliterated by bloodlight. Leetu then pries Emps from the chair but he's cornered by Horus and tossed off a giant table, falling at the feet of the Chaos Gods themselves. Emps continues to fight and continues to get pushed back down.

Loken arrives back at the Lupercal Court and is confronted by centaurs with Horus's face, coming to execute him for betraying the Mournival. He defeats them and declares he's broken no oath, before turning once again to search for Emps.

Olly and Grammaticus's last cut in the materia drops them right in front of Horus as he's again approaching the Emperor. Grammaticus utters a word that Olly had dreamt of and Horus is sent flying back, long enough for Ollanius to tell John to leave while he can and remember to set the path of knots across history so they can make sure they get back here at the right time. John leaves and Olly gives Emps his Athame dagger before taking up his rifle and standing against Horus.

Loken finally arrives at the Court and confronts Horus, pleading with him to come back and reject the lies of the Dark Gods. When Horus refuses to listen, Loken speaks and says that this is the final truth that Horus is gone forever. So he's tossed aside and Horus crushes the dying Emperor's skull.

Meanwhile. Those who can hear Moriana's call to stand and that The Emperor Must Live renew their fight. Vulkan pauses his plan to blow the Palace. Rann and Zephon hunker down protecting their fortress. Everyone reacts differently to the call to arms, but the call gets out all the same.

Typhus is winning the siege of the Hollow Mountain and his bone choir is disrupting the Dark Angels efforts to relight the Astronomican. But they do manage to hear Moriana's call to arms. Katsuhiro puts it in plain terms that it's not Typhus's choir that is disrupting Keeler's congregation, but the fear they feel hearing it. Cypher and the other Librarians agree to try and disrupt the choir long enough for Keeler's chants to take root in the mountain. Cypher rises as Zahariel and they manage to interrupt the bone choir for a few seconds, and that's just enough time for Keeler's faithful to ignite the Astronomican, killing almost three quarters of the two million refugees in the process and bringing down the mountainsides, burying Angels, Fists and Death Guard alike.

Horus stands over the body of the Emperor, finally dead, and Loken openly weeps, explaining that the Emperor was stronger than Horus for not giving into the infinite power that Horus now is. Only it's not Loken, or not the real Loken. The light of the Astronomican infuses an Aspect of the Emperor in the shape of Loken. By appealing to the man still inside what Horus Is, Horus is weakened for an instant, and that is all that the Light of the Emperor needs to plunge the Athame Dagger into his son, killing him. And then the galaxy dies.

The End and the Death is many ends and many deaths, but above all, it is the end of the Emperor's Vision and the Death of Humankind. It is the death of peace and the end of reason. It is the death of hope and the end of rational thought. It is the end of victory and the death of innocence. The Neverborn now Are, and they will never leave the minds of men.

It is the dawn of a new millennium that brings only war.

The Emperor defeats Horus on page 400. There are 100 pages left to deal with the aftermath. Battlefleet Solar and Guilliman's Liberation Fleet get a short mention but they just tear into the traitors as reality reasserts itself. The Warp is absolutely hosed by the sudden recession with entire regions of it being obliterated by their violent untangling from the material plane. The madness of the Blood Angels recedes, leaving only carnage in their wake. Maximus Thane leads a 1000-strong scratch company in chasing down the traitors, and the records argue that if even a third more loyalists had survived, the Scouring would have ended there in the Solar System, completely and utterly destroying the traitor legions.

Aboard the Vengeful Spirit, Dorn and Valdor discuss what to do with Emps. Dorn retrieves Ferrus's skull from Horus's trophy room. Raldoron and his Blood Angels take Sanguinius with them. Dorn discovers Leetu's interest in Tarot and follows the remaining cards, interpreting them to mean placing Emps upon the throne in a hopes of saving him. Loken remains behind to stand vigil over Horus where no one else will. Eventually, Abaddon and the other Sons of Horus arrive. Abaddon says he won't kill Loken and that he is free to follow or leave, Abby won't stop him. Loken says that he will go to Dorn and ask for amnesty for the Sons of Horus, though others believe Dorn and Guilliman will never forgive them. Before he can leave, Erebus kills Loken, echoing Ahriman's discussion about the creation of Daemons and stating that the daemon made at this moment will haunt Abaddon forever, but that it was a necessary move for the Sons of Horus to survive. Abby lets Erebus live because he's too useful, and Erebus whispers that the loss they all feel without Horus is just a passing grief and nothing else.

Ahriman leaves Sindermann and Mauer since he's bored and time's working again. As the two pack up to leave the library Kyril asks the one bookkeeper in the room with them her name, and she replies that it is Lilean Chase.

Amon oversees the scuttling of the Sigilite's retreat. Fo's bioweapon is to be stored on Titan. Xanthus scrubs the last few remains of the research, including the remaining genetic batches of Xanthus himself, the original one. Fo has somehow made a Xanthus clone and assumed his body and mind, leaving the original Xanthus's dismembered corpse to be immolated.

Rann and Zephon rally their remaining bastion defenders and Rann takes up a banner, planting it atop a hill of dead with a shout of "For the Emperor!" Nassir Amit encounters a Odi Sartak from the Shattered Legions who tells him that the carnage around him only stopped because its as far as Amit got. Khan Sojuk survives a bloodbath that should have killed him, but all it did instead was kill his internal reasoning and logic, realizing that the hope of survival was worse to him than the certainty of death. Moriana and Agathe discuss the role of good lies vs bad truths as Moriana tells the soldiers of the 403rd the story of Ollanius Pius and how he stood before Horus when nobody else could. They agree to scrub the penal records of the 403rd so that the soldiers can fight on in the coming months and years of the Scouring rather than face execution for their crimes in past lives. Sigismund and Keeler survive the avalanche and astronomican firing of the Hollow Mountain and return to the Palace, where Keeler is last seen embracing an effigy of the Golden Throne. Grammaticus appears back in prehistoric Spain, leaving a knot to for them to follow back across time in a cave in the Pyrenees.

Malcador's body is gone. Malcador's spirit is burned away. But the remainder of him, his memory within other people, stays long enough on the Golden Throne to see his friend returned at last. He has final parting thoughts for Dorn to hope he one day realizes that plans always change, and the outcomes are not set in stone, but that we constantly strive for better plans and make do with the results we achieve.

END.
