Dying in the newest momodora doesn't even do anything besides kick you back to the last checkpoint you used, you still keep all the items you picked up and map you revealed. Just amazed at some of the things goons let themselves get defeated by

DE is my favorite game of all time so I am trying to judge this on its own merits, though it is 100% aping DE in almost every way. That said, it has some solid ideas. One is that your Hope meter (basically your version of DE's Psychic health) determines your demeanor and that demeanor can grant extra dialogue options (and presumably extra solutions to puzzles or story paths). I think this adds an interesting element to both role playing a character and also making interesting gameplay decisions... are you willing to make trade-offs for Hope to get a Hopeful dialogue option? Is being Hopeful even helpful in this world? Who knows. The second idea is that instead of having 24 skills that you can upgrade any time you want, you start with your class's main 3 skills. When you choose to use or listen to those skills, they gain xp and upgrade that way rather than just you picking which skill at every level-up. So as you RP your character, you're literally reinforcing the kind of person you want them to be as you gain XP in those traits. I don't know what that means for future playthroughs trying to be some hosed up combo (and I don't know if you can spec into other skills like magic if you didn't start with them), but it's at least different from DE in a meaningful way. So far this is a VERY cogs-on-hats "Blimey!" Johnny Five Aces kinda steampunk world buuuut... I personally am not entirely sick of that myself so I don't mind. The graphics look good to me so far, things run smoothly, and one neat accessibility(?) feature is that any weirdo words that get used in dialogue can be hovered over for a definition. So you may not know what a sandhog is but it will just tell you. I am cautiously optimistic. Especially for $18.

Haven't gotten past the start of Chapter 3 yet, I found myself starting again to try out other options. I'm enjoying it so far, though I would recommend turning "Always run" on. You switch between controlling 3 characters: Atticus Daley is a Minotaur and orphan with a sword cane, an interest in illusion magic, and alcoholism. Clara Reed is a human singer and sex worker who is trying to get out of London to start a better life. The 3rd protagonist is a dwarven inventor, I haven't played much with him. All the Characters have 4 stats that correspond to the 4 bodily humours.: Yellow Bile Atticus: Animal Instinct Clara: Intuition Blood Atticus: Spryness Clara: Grace Black Bile Atticus: Wits Clara: Intellect Phlegm Atticus: Self Control Clara: Tact Instead of dice rolls the game uses card draws. Each Character has 4 starting archetypes that each give a stat spread and a trait corresponding to a major arcana card. If Atticus starts with maximum self control and minimum Animal Instinct he can use illusion magic to make himself look human and avoid fantastical racism, if you pick high animal instinct he has the intimidating trait and doesn't need to do a card test to scare people. There is definitely some inter-chapter reactivity visible already: In my first attempt Atticus saved an orphan pickpocket who was being menaced by her Ladsman, basically the adult who runs a gang of children to do crimes. He did it by chucking a barrel at the man, knocking him into sewer water and washing out of sight. In chapter 2 Clara has to talk to Ladsman named McGrady about why he's not fulfilling his obligations to a contact of hers. In my second play through Atticus intervened directly and killed the Ladsman with his sword cane. Clara was looking around for the Ladsman and asked a child pickpocket, the same one Atticus had saved, where McGrady was. McGrady was dead and Clara had to negotiate with the orphan pickpocket Annika instead. Incidentally, Mortismal has done a review of the game already. This is a pretty petty complaint from someone who hasn't touched the series in years, but I wish Dominions had moved back towards super-combatants and magic instead of away from it. Every time I hear them say e.g. "We wanted to tweak the balance between conventional armies and magic" I get briefly excited and then deflate when I realize they meant in the opposite direction.
