I hate coffee and generally avoid caffeine, so I will be willing to auction off my two yearly allotments to the highest bidder. But yeah, I can see how reducing coffee consumption to such a reasonable level might not be quite as plausible for the huge swaths of addicts out there. cant cook creole bream fucked around with this message at 18:46 on Jan 23, 2024 |

kik2dagroin posted:freepers itt haven't had solid shits since the Nixon administration This was a real bear to track down. Of course, the only people talking about this poo poo are the nuttiest conspiracy people, the right wing outrage machine, and, well, loving Infowars. Here's an article by Lombard Odier, a Swiss bank that's pivoted to climate investment, for whom Hubert Keller works, talking about coffee. Here are some quotes from the article. quote:"Ultimately, big corporations, who are the natural buyers of carbon credits, are going to concentrate on real emissions reductions on the ground. So we have concerns over whether voluntary carbon markets can achieve the scale we need. We are focussing our attention on regenerative food production. Why? Because 85% of the pressure on Nature stems from our food systems, so it is the development of regenerative food production that will unlock value in Nature’s assets. It will increase the life and resilience of those assets. It will increase the carbon sequestration. And it will create nature-positive commodities at a time when the world is putting a price on the environmental cost of production." quote:Professor Johan Rockstrom agreed. Following 2023’s “year of extremes”, and a “huge warning” from recent research showing that the Brazilian Amazon rainforest has turned from vital carbon sink into a carbon source, he said: “Regenerative action will help Nature continue to provide an essential carbon sink. We can make at least a 20 gigaton shift in global emissions by moving from extractive value chains, such as monoculture agriculture, to regenerative value chains.” [...]Agroforestry – a regenerative form of agriculture that combines farming with forest restoration and management – will be key to their protection, she explained. “We know that 65% of soils in Africa are degraded. How are we going to have productive, sustainable, prosperous value chains when our soils are degrading?” quote:“75% of people on the planet are fed by smallholder farmers,” she continued. “We need to connect the finance and the people with power with the wisdom of the smallholder farmers. It needs long-term thinking, a long-term investment strategy.” quote:“But when you produce coffee regeneratively you can measure the added carbon value. And the land is going to become more valuable, not less valuable as it often does with monocultures. And you can increase yields and sell your coffee directly to large coffee buyers or end-markets. We believe we can meet emerging market risks with a potential 20% total return on investment.” So it's pretty clear in context that the quotes that the conspiracy nuts are using are pulled entirely out of their context and things like "you're gonna get to drink a few cups of coffee a year" probably need to be continued "if climate change continues as predicted and destroys the places where we know coffee can be grown." kik2dagroin posted:This is going to be another feather in their WEF conspiracy theories cap. It should likewise be no surprise at all that Jojo Mehta's words will have been pulled out of context as well. I can't find much on her presentation, but her organization, Stop Ecocide Now, gives plenty of concrete examples of what they're talking about and is worth a scroll for additional context. quote:ECOCIDE is broadly understood to mean mass damage and destruction of ecosystems – severe harm to nature which is widespread or long-term. Again this seems something entirely on topic for the area of discussion here, which is between people that believe themselves to be influential money-having policy wonks. Making it an international crime to gently caress up the environment makes a certain amount of sense, but good loving luck. Regardless it's clear that of course there aren't calls to criminalize fishing, because the context is very clearly going to be overfishing and the directly related destruction of fish ecosystems. But of course, none of that matters. The WEF is evil therefore everything said there can be construed to be evil, and if it ain't evil enough, just mangle some quotes to make them evil! God I loving hate these people.

cant cook creole bream posted:I hate coffee and generally avoid caffeine, so I will be willing to auction off my two yearly allotments to the highest bidder. There are possible solutions to this. We have been through this before in Europe during world wars when coffee was difficult to get and it was partially supplemented or completely replaced with ersatz ingredients made from domestic plants and mushrooms. Food industry is actively working on alternatives to plants like coffee and cocoa because it's well known that their availability and price are going to change with climate change. If they are successful then one day we will have GM cockroaches that taste like M&M's!

$600 for rent is pretty good. The crazy billboard for attorneys being successful is well documented, but it is usually because people have no brand loyalty to lawyers and usually only need one in an emergency, so being memorable is important (especially for criminal or class action attorneys). I'm kind of enjoying the weird unofficial focus group that some people really think a cowboy lawyer ad campaign makes them a better attorney.
