Things that happen in the shooting phase are simultaneous, there's no way to interrupt an enemy attack with an attack without a very specific SPA.

Showdown at High Noon 4-6

The noon glacier was dotted with low hills and trees, but even those weren’t enough to provide the enemy AeroSpace fighters with cover on approach. Even then, Ironhead thought they were flying uncomfortably—probably dangerously—low. So close to the ground, all it would take was a taller-than-average tree and one of the fighters could be lost in an instant; and yet there just wasn’t enough cover to hide their approach. They were too low for bombs, and even strafing looked like it would be risky. It looked more like a kamikaze attack than an airstrike.

Ironhead shook it off, the incongruity bothered her but if she didn’t put up some fire they’d be able to do—whatever they were planning. Fortunately, the Rifleman’s rangefinders were more than up for the task, giving her a lead bubble for her autocannons. Lasers didn’t need the lead time, but everyone knew autocannons were best against airborne fighters. She thumbed her firing stud and the Rifleman rocked as both autocannons opened up.

AeroSpace Fighters were large targets, but they were far faster than BattleMechs. One of her salvos missed, but the other caught the bigger delta-wing fighter dead center; shaking it visibly. For a moment she felt a flash of elation as its silhouette started to break up. Even a few lost components would put that fighter at risk if it tried to land or boost for space—a breach or a lost landing gear would be an almost-certain death sentence—and if she got lucky, the fighter might break up completely. It took her a few moments to realize that wasn’t what was happening.

“poo poo,” she broadcast. “AirMech conversion! Watch your backs, enemy Land-Air Mech lance incoming!”

This is interesting to me because, to me, you made a really brave move getting in close to the Crusader, which has a lot of short-range brawling firepower. It missed several shots on 6s but still did quite a bit of damage to you. The Dragon has always seemed like a shittier Centurion to me. Kind of Shadow-Hawky tbh.

anyway, what am I going to do...1016 beckons again, I guess. That'd give me rear-arc on the LAM. Do we reckon that shooting at the Dragon as a secondary target keeps it engaged?

Runa
Feb 13, 2011

Considering the defining feature of a Centurion is being slow and having a big gun, calling the Dragon (relatively zippy for its weight class) a shittier Centurion is inaccurate both in its generosity by comparing it to a Centurion, but also by failing to describe its intended role.

The move mods on those LAMs are just ridiculous. As much as I want to shoot at the back of the little one I don't think anything I have is going to shoot at better than 8s.

Since the Hoplite's switching targets I'll mount the hill here. I think reverse to 1116, turn, then up 1115 is optimal if I want to end up facing 1114 so the larger LAM isn't in my rear arc.

Then everything at the Stalker. I'm at zero heat and whiffed the last turn so I need to try to get damage out. I think that'll put me at 14 heat. I'll cool off some next turn.

I had a 'Mech based on the Screamer LAM, the Screaming Hawk; but it was not a LAM. It was just LAM-adjacent.

People have asked me to run LAMs for years and I've never done it. LAMs are fine--as long as they stay in Mech/AirMech. AirMech LAMs are no worse than most VTOLs (and operate almost exactly the same way, complete with accidental sideslips if they do more than cruise). They're really kinda stuck using only energy weapons or the lightest missile launchers.
