Why the hell does NPT exist (at least on automobiles, actual pipes can do whatever they want who cares) when we have plenty of normal-rear end options that don't require me to spend an hour searching for a bizzaro fitting that costs too much money and ships via a freight company that I've never heard of and will take a stupid amount of time to get here? In other news, new trans cooler lines are nice. Or will be presumably.

Because pipes exist on cars, too! (I agree with you.)

Don't even get me loving started on that. There are like a dozen thread standards and fitting types I have to deal with. Let's see... NPT commonly used on vacuum barbs, etc NPS (straight instead of tapered threads) is used on many GM transmission cooler lines Imperial ORB metric ORB JIS flare Imperial flare Metric flare AN flare AN flare with Schrader valve DIN ISO bubble flare Quick connect BSPP BSPT Multiple sizes and types of banjo bolt and fitting naturally I never ever have the correct size or adapter on hand.

Took my Mazda 6 (2005, 225k km on it) and while it passed inspections - it barely passed. The guy was pretty nice about it, a rust hole in the bottom that honestly would've needed me coming back for a re-inspection but he just put a "urging to repair" note on my papers instead. Great it passed but ugh, mazdas from the mid 2000s are the worst rust buckets... So I've been dragging my heels on buying a larger floor jack and a pair of jackstands since I hate spending money, even on stuff I want, but I guess I will really need them now. And I need to start reassembling the Saab so I can move it outside while I work on the mazda. At least I got an indoor place to weld nowadays.

Yeah that era of Mazdas must have some sort of sheet metal plague like a lot of German cars had in the '90s.

By the way is it just me who keeps finding tools in my cars? On the Saab I found a big socket stuck to a nut near the radiator last summer and now I've dug out a pair of tongs from under the drivers sides lights. There's a compartment there where you can drop your tools if you are unlucky. I dropped a wrench there but managed to fish it out.

Earlier someone said "just hire an electrician", got pushback, and this is why I just pay experts now. Happy for everyone who saved the $300 doing it themselves and driving to Home Depot repeatedly, though.

I'm happy when the experts I hire only have to go once. Turns out houses built before 1997 have a lot of weird poo poo to discover as you get deeper in.

For plumbing yeah I plan better. Regular ones that is, I'm not stocking up on gfci outlets or anything. I already have extra wire from earlier projects when it was even cheaper so I'm being smart! Or something. Especially after hiring a plumber to do the same level of work I could have for way more money than I would have needed. I don't mind paying an expert (like for the gas water heater!) but adding the sink with lift pump showcased that I can do the same meh work for way cheaper.

Turns out, I'm the guy who *finds* the 10mm sockets... Seriously - I have 3 1/4" drive 10mm short sockets now, not including the one in the "travel" tool bag. I had 4, but the Snap-On one I found turned out to have been thrown out because it was cracked open. Yes, I probably could have taken it to a Snap-On truck, but then I'd have to find and deal with a Snap-On truck.

I'll probably try this in the Flannel Chat thread as well, but just in case, since I know a bunch of you are Subaru perverts: The power steering pump on our '03 Outback positively howls when it's cold - ambient temps below 40F or so - until it warms up substantially. It just started doing that this past year. Fluid is up to levels as far as I can tell, and it's driven almost every day. Steering assist feels normal, just noisy. Suggestions? Time to replace the PS pump? Flush and fill?

Here at least, it's that the stores are poo poo, say you go to Bunnings for 5 things, at least one of them you'll be greeted with an empty spot on the shelf where it should be, and one will be "we don't carry that/it doesn't exist". So off you go to the next location or hunt out the specialist shop. Why not just go to the specialist shop first? Because they're often arseholes and charge through the roof because they usually don't deal with cash customers, expecting you to have a trade account. Also because you stupidly expect the massive big box store to have everything, no matter how many times you refuse to learn the lesson. Edit: "At least you can get a Bunnings snag!" not here anymore, not very often anyway, but they all have a cafe now, and hell the closest one to me is actually pretty good for both coffee and pastries.

I did take auto shop there a few times, but I have no idea why I have a random 10mm socket that once belonged to a highschool that I graduated from 25+ years ago.

Oh. Apparently I had a court date on the date I got hit (thanks lawyer for not letting me know - glad gmail stores everything - he never let me know via email, text, or phone call) I let him know I'd been hit by a car and was in rough shape, mentally and physically. "Will you go back into rehab? Since you got hit by a car it sounds like you were drunk." What the gently caress dude, I have a literal brain injury and you think I should go back to rehab because some rear end in a top hat blew a stop sign doing easily 3x the speed limit? I barely remember the past month and can barely talk, and apparently that means I was playing frogger while chugging a 40. I'm happy to go back into rehab if someone will pay for it, except for the whole "no money" bit. I'm couch surfing on a good day. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 05:20 on Jan 24, 2024 |

Do all your plumbing with welded stainless, who gives a gently caress what the threads are then.

The lazy-man's socket weld: screw NPT stainless fittings together and run a bead around the outside. E: I am completely broke, but my house will crumble around the plumbing.

Tons of npt on hydraulics, *mostly* trouble free. The problems often come from using thread tape. But yeah, just avoid taper pipe threads in general is usually good advice. It's good for the valve business tho

I know that npt threads are *supposed* to seal by thread distortion but I've never seen npt threads that would actually seal that way unless they were cranked down harder than Soulja boy ever cranked anything. And they were impossible for me to get off using a 36" pipe wrench. Probably should have used a 48 I guess. So my solution is either thread dope or Teflon tape and tighten it till is "tight". Never had a single loving leak doing that unless I didnt put enough dope or put the tape on in the wrong direction. Both of those my fault obviously. Thousands of uses at thousands of PSIs and no leaks. slidebite posted:Tons of npt on hydraulics, *mostly* trouble free.

# ? Jan 24, 2024 16:13 |

The problem isn't so much using thread sealant itself, as with most things, It's doing it improperly. Using it so it gets into the system causes havoc on valves, especially extremely low clearance servo. That jerky jerky motion you see on poorly maintained hydraulics is very often related to sticking valves because of that... And other various reasons. So It's best to just use connections that don't need sealant at all. Although that won't stop many people from using thread sealant on threads for face/seat sealing surfaces lol.
