going in blind was the right choice. it's terrifying for most of it. shiina's asami is amazing. the effects were awesome. well edited and shot. plus it's always fun to play the game of "watch a japanese film and guess which american directors shamelessly stole from it"

the only thing is, blood and gore don't really do it for me, so I spent the whole third act going, "oh, that's gross. ouch, that probably hurt. yikes. yeesh. :silent:" I was disappointed that all that craft and skill was in service of cheap bodily thrills. it definitely felt different from american gore porn though. unlike in, say, the saw movies where the torture is explicitly for the audience, the killer is doing things because they are a character in the film, and not an avatar of some divine justice or vengeance. yet it's hard for me not to compare it to the other 90s japanese horror film I watched last week. kiyoshi kurosawa's cure is similarly cerebral, but does not give the "satisfying" bloody showdown type of ending in audition. the lack of closure or answers left me much more haunted, and I think it will have more staying power in my mind.

Anyways I heard of and watched Audition way before I really knew who Miike was so for a long time I didn't connect him to the movie which in retrospect should have been obvious

yeah, I'm near an alamo drafthouse and they screen lots of older movies. since 2020 I hadn't been going to the theaters as much as I used to pre-covid. at the start of the year I decided to dedicate more time to it and now I'm going to the theatre more frequently than I ever have. I'm having a blast

I went to a real theater last month and it was awful. I thought of Mike’s old man complaining and realized all of his little annoyances were happening to me.

The Alamo Drafthouse is almost entirely devoid of the little annoyances you get at other theaters. For example, they don't play ads the whole time from when the auditorium opens until the movie starts (instead they have little customer-made pre-shows playing various things that are specifically relevant to whatever movie you're going to see).

Their no talking/texting policy is famously strict, but the real secret sauce that makes the movie-going experience at the drafthouse better than any other theater chain: They don't let in unsupervised minors. It doesn't matter if the movie is rated G, no one under 18 is gonna get in unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. That means if you are seeing a movie at a drafthouse, you are guaranteed to not have a group of high schoolers in the theater. And since groups of high schoolers tend to account for 90% of all annoying bullshit behavior by patrons at movie theaters, you just don't get that at the drafthouse.

That said, the drafthouse is clearing hedging their bets like crazy this year. They always did repertory showings of classic and/or important movies, but typically those were pretty limited or were part of some special program. Now they're building a lot more repertory showings into their main schedule. They realize that there's going to be a major content drought because of last year's strikes, so they're doing something called Alamo Time Capsule to try and convince folks to keep going there even when there are no worthwhile new releases (because hey, wouldn't it be cool to finally see The Talented Mr. Ripley on the big screen!)

Japan immediately after WW2 was at its lowest point, zero. Godzilla shows up and makes poo poo even worse than zero

So, Godzilla is a substitution for Japan in this case and its value equals 0 (the numerical representation of Japan's lowest point). Then 1.0 represents Godzilla. So, Godzilla (Japan) minus 1.0 (Godzilla) equals -1.0 (Post Godzilla Japan)?

Wouldn't it be more clearly written as Japan - Godzilla = -1?

Should Marriage Story be called Divorce -1.0?

drat I wish there was a theater around here doing classic stuff like that, Alamos are pretty nice. May just be me getting old but there's precious few new movies I actually want to go to a theater to watch

Theaters around me have picked up on the Anime Expo Cinema Nights thing and I've gone and seen a bunch of Satoshi Kon and other movies in theater the past few months here- love seeing lavishly animated stuff on the big screen.

Also apparently nobody really cares so there's only like 4 other people in the theater for this stuff typically so normal theater problems are nonexistent

There are movies where I think having a packed, noisy house enhances the movie- action movies, horror movies, crass lowest-common-denominator comedies

Evil Dead 2 still rules in a theater full of people

So, patterning it off of Godzilla -1.0, Divorce is a substitution for Marriage and 1.0 is Adam Driver. So, Marriage (Divorce) minus Adam Driver (1.0) equals Divorce. Or maybe Divorce represents the kid? See, this is why I can't finish my GED (Godzilla Education Development).
