The thing could grow as big as Pathfinder and there would still be goons calling it a heartbreaker because they decided that's what it was the first time they heard about it. They saw a youtube man was making an rpg and their headcanon is that Matt Colville has only ever played or read D&D and that's as much thinking as they're going to do about it.
My definition of a heartbreaker is pretty close to hyphz. It's heartbreaking when a potentially neat game contains certain mechanics that are only there because D&D has them. The level of actual commercial success is irrelevant.

and since the stats have no secondary modifiers (you don't get to add Agility to the group initiative rolls, or Might to your health... I think) I actually don't think you have the same D&D issues with Dex being a god stat etc. You can also pair any skill with any stat
Firstly, if the ability scores are so easy to slot out and do so very little why are they even there in the first place?

Secondly, Endurance is a bad stat in this setup because it's a less broadly applicable verb than agility or intuition or reason. There's also a large overlap with Might, weakening them both. If my highest stat is Reason or Agility I've got a lot more verb points than someone with maxed Endurance, but they all cost the same amount of resources per rank.

So if they don't really add anything and Endurance-heavy characters need to reach more with their descriptions to get the same bang for their buck, what was the original game need they decided these were suited to address? What was their reasoning for adding ability scores to their game?

Oh yeah, there was none. They literally said so, on camera. They have ability scores because <didn't even think about it> and there's six of them because <didn't even think about it> and they basically match the D&D scores because <didn't even think about it> and everything after that is the exact kind of kludgy implementation and defensive post-hoc justification that marks the most frustrating of heartbreakers.

That's why "fixing D&D" leads to "almost good" games, because you're designing backwards. Instead of adding game mechanics to meet specific needs you instead are starting with existing mechanics and needing reasons to take them out. So yay, in this new game they've tweaked the numbers a little, run the words through a thesaurus, even slashed away at so many things they affected that they're nothing more than a vestigial limb twitching juuust enough to cause problems... but the idea of asking "if" or "why" instead of "how" was just a little too beyond them. That's what makes it heartbreaking.

They'll probably make a lot of money.

It's because making a game to be sold, is very different than making a game to be played.

To sell a game you need it to be approachable and interesting the the potential buyer. Six stats is comforting to people, they look at that and feel like they understand the game enough right off the bat that they can enjoy it. Yes a system with rules tailored from the beginning to directly prompt the type of gameplay intended will be better to play, but in the end that's not what most consumers want (even if most of them don't know it). They want something new, but not TOO new.

There's a reason there are so many games out there with amazing evocative settings but terrible rules, because the rules don't sell the game, and the smart business people figured out that not only do they not sell the game, but reskinning DnD is easier AND sells better.

I'm preparing for a one-shot of Tales from the Loop, and wondering what good first- or third-party modules are out there for it, preferably ones that have a tone closer to the TV series than to TftL's less serious influences. Anyone had a look at the modules landscape for it?

I’m pretty sure the TV series came long after the RPG. The book is kind of intrinsically “silly” since it’s just a science kid’s version of fairies at the bottom of the garden, and many of the TV series episodes are just kind of vignettes? It might be difficult to motivate PCs.

Not too far off from a cool indie RPG I got to edit: Don't Die.

Basically you can do what you try to most of the time, but your stats are "Struggles" that you roll to avoid specific categories of consequences or setbacks from your action.

Man, I just want to kill my adventurers. Lately I’ve been really wanting to play You Meet at a Tavern, You Die in a Dungeon.

Premise is simple. You are an adventurer down on their luck. Maybe this last, impossible score will do the trick. And so you make a character and act out their last dungeon crawl.

Echoing the others that this looks really good, and you should put it together into a more presentable book, I really think it will catch on, especially with the success of the game. I've wanted to play Rogue Trader but the system was always very meh.

Also, it seemed like ordering a lot of books at once would result in them using enough packaging to make sure they got to me intact, which was true in 3/4 cases.

I think I heard that story before, and the Bible one was a hosed-up copy of Werewolf: the Apocalypse, which leads to the hilarious mental image of someone somewhere opening up their newly acquired PoD Bible and being very confused about how Sunday services had seemingly never mentioned all the werewolf stuff

If you were to put money on it, which of these two characters, based on the art, do you think would win in a fight?

Elf lady definitely beats the Barbarian, but only in the version where he has the skull helmet, because she looks more like a plucky protagonist fighting some faceless villainous warlord and her winning makes the most narrative sense.

WIthout the helmet and it's just some rough-around-the-edges Conan type? Could realistically go either way, but odds are they eventually put aside their differences and team up to fight a lich or some other mutual foe.
