There's a pretty fair argument to make that, even at the time of The Daily Show's height of popularity, pointing out Republican hypocrisy accomplished nothing.

Today? Fascists revel in hypocrisy, the exercise of power that comes from the schoolyard bully saying "Hat? What hat? I don't have your hat. Do you guys see a hat on my head?" is precisely what the base wants. They'll never concede that they're bad people when all someone does is threaten them with a good time and owning the libs.

Also, it should be pointed out that everything involving Trump, his cronies, and basically the entire GOP itself, has pretty much become impossible to satirize, because they are already complete jokes by themselves. Who wants to watch some old comedian do a warmed-over version of his early-mid 2000s schtick, when Trump is out there providing us comedy gold on an almost hourly basis?

I understand that people in this thread have made excellent nuanced points about why Donald J Trump was the perfect storm in 2016 for Olds and racists to latch onto based on his past, but I just want to re-iterate the main reason they still ALL say why they vote for him: "He thinks like we do, he's just like us, he says what we are all thinking"

They are just extremely racist and hate women and LGBTQ people. That's it. There is no secret code or algorithm of Businessman that they admire and respect, no policy they can point to, no grand agenda. He's just an old rich white racist mysognist pig gently caress just like them, and that's what they want, because they think THEY should be in charge. He's just a 215 pound mirror shooting their morbid reflections back at them. They just hate those groups and want to be able to openly say and do whatever they want.

This country is deeply racist and mysognist, we are loving built on it. Add to that the most narcissist generation of people in human history, combined with a bunch of misanthrope tech bro social darwinist bullshit and prosperity gospel grift for 40 loving years, and no real attempt to ever actually remove these fuckwits from actual power, and you have this: a bunch of extremely racist old and aging idiot men and women, whiteness personified regardless of actual background. No thoughts of others, no thoughts of the future, just tell me it's cool to hate the people I hate.

Like it's actually really simple: they just utterly suck as a group of human beings, and have been allowed to continue sucking for a long time because of white supremacy and mysoginy at the institutional level, because "being racist, homophobic, sexist" Pigs was to many just an unfortunate and sometimes humorous to them fact of their "kooky" relatives, and society didn't call them out and cast them our any near enough, so they got more and more bold till we have this now.

You can't appease a narcissist or compromise with them, because they don't even see that as an option: they win, you lose

Your relatives always sucked, he just let's them feel safe to say it out loud.

Agreed. If there's any magic to Trump is that he is the empty vessel of every nightmarish fantasy. All of his followers are pulling for a different deranged dream world that can't exist, whether it's a Christian theocracy, libertopia, the revived Confederate States of America, or the Fourth Reich.

that's also why the antonym is used in a thousand other things, because the opposite of a rejection of reality is the acceptance of it

Frankly, any satire about the GOP just irritates me these days because a) it has absolutely zero impact on anything they do, and b) assuages milquetoast liberals that they're justified in doing nothing and makes them ever more smug and lazy as Rome burns around them. Republicans revel in hypocrisy as a way to exercise their power over people and narrative, and moderates see toothless satire as sufficient "resistance" to people losing basic loving civil rights. Poe's Law rules our reality these days, satirists need to either up their game or get on the streets with the rest of us to affect change.

Anecdotal sign report: I've seen almost no new Trump signs or flags or anything. One guy did put up a flag a few weeks ago, but it's been gone last couple of times - I assume it's snow plow related. Big black scary flag "Trump for ME"

I don't know where we were in 2020 or 2016 at this juncture sign wise, but my area was awash in Trump stuff by some point in the electoral season, and it took a while for it to disappear. And it has, except for 3 spots that I see regularly. And nothing else new.

Republican Hammer 20K

Libertarians would be the first to fall because they would hate working together, and split up into tribes.

The Fourth Reich would fall next because of their strict race stuff would lead to their own civil wars and testing each other's blood purity.

And then it's a toss up between the Theocracy and confederates.

The biggest problem with the Christian Theocracy is they will eventually do actions based on biblical things and it will screw them.

Like when that one greek or persian guy didn't high tail his boat out of the danger zone because he thought the to gods were telling him to stay, and then he got wiped out.

The Confederates are the ones with the most ability to change and stay together. They might duck tape together some sort of government.
At least until they all want to be kings and fall into their own civil wars and tribes

TDS, The West Wing, and many other shows of their ilk from around the early 2000s were definitely designed to make liberals feel smug and superior despite Bush being in the WH. In the era of TRUMP, I don't think there's much of an appetite for that type of comfy liberal pablum and toothless satire, all tinged with :decorum:, as there was 20 or so years ago. Particularly not when it's being delivered by the aforementioned anti-vaxxer that they're bringing back to TDS.

From an opposite Doomer perspective (what's the opposite of a Doomer? A Hoper??), there's a decent chance Trump is in jail before the election, and the Republican party is in chaos and tatters. Not only will they lose the Presidency, but such an event will cost them the House and Senate too. And will the RNC be able to recover? Probably, eventually, maybe, hopefully not. But we could (and very well might) put this MAGA poo poo in the ground this election, and anything that remains will be an anchor, dragging the Republicans down.

Trump will most likely be convicted at some point in the future but I don't see a single plausible scenario where Trump gets convicted and sentenced before November 5th, 2024. None of his trials are moving that quickly.

in suburbia kansas city i have not seen a resurgence of trump poo poo after the one insane holdout a few blocks away either took down or did not put back up his "TRUMP WON" flag after the snowstorm i mentioned in the last thread. i also do not see any TRUMP stickers driving around - i definitely saw plenty of those in 2016 and 2020.

i'll wait until donny picks a VP and there's proper sticker merchandise to really feel confident in it (i distinctly remember the TRUMP markers were always trump/pence poo poo), but anecdotally, kansas city appears to be well over trump at this point.
