Man, finally broke and got the 4k ULTRA HD WOWZERS EDITION Blu Ray of the new Dunc, because I just don't think there's an iMax version coming out ever if it's not coming out in advance of the squeakuell (little Maud'dib reference there). Anyway, watching it my wife was like, "Why didn't we just watch this on Netflix, the quality here is really grainy anyway" referring to all the digital grain. ALL THE DIGITAL GRAIN. My God. It's SO intrusive, like half the scenes in the film look like they've got ants running all over them. It's not my TV setup, it's added that way onto the film. I hadn't really noticed it when it was showing on Amazon, I guess it's only with the 4k megafancy res version that it's quite so glaring, but... gently caress. I like to imagine it's just the sensation of my eyes becoming eyes of the ibad while I'm watching it.

It's not digital grain exactly. They shot it on digital and then transferred it to 35mm film. They tried test shoots directly onto 35mm and 65mm but the sand was causing issues and getting into the camera bodies. That was an issue back when Laurence of Arabia was filmed too.

I mean, I guess the net effect is the same, but that's at least a bit more excusable. Even so, it's quite frustrating. It does look exactly like the digital grain that you do get in other stuff though. Apparently it looks good and we like it, and like, I believe that's the case, I guess on cinema screens? But it just really isn't true for the home release. I know Denis did basically say "Watch this at the cinema, it will look poo poo at home" so fair play. Luckily they've just re-released the first film at iMax cinemas, so I'll try and go see it again on a big proper iMax laser screen while that's still possible. (Because maddeningly, it probably never will be again short of very specific showings!)
