His lawyers don't try to really win the cases, they're just performing for Trump. Most of what they do and say in court is tailored to stoke his ego, not to sway the judge or jury. He has bad lawyers because, whether he realizes it or not, he ultimately cares more about his ego than actually winning his cases.
