Luckily there's a use for all that thorium now https://world-nuclear-news.org/Articles/Operating-permit-issued-for-Chinese-molten-salt-re Much like with all other forms of carbon-fee energy production, China is the only country taking Gen IV nuclear (molten salt and pebble bed) seriously China's vulnerability to a crude oil blockade--and the resulting effort to wean itself off fossil fuels--may very well save humanity. So I was listening to this new Washington blob chit chat on my commute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nill8M_Qi-Y&t=28s I don't know if the recent wars spooked the usual think tank or what, the talking head seem to speak more "common sense" than their usual bullshit, funny even. Colby (14m): if Biden white house is not ready to have war with China, unable to keep up with Chinese military build up, they need to find a way to accommodate China * EU can't materially send any ship to help in a potential Taiwan strait crisis. And if UK were to send their ship, it would actually cost US Navy more resource to provide logistic support. US has to work with local actors. * Both Japanese and Taiwanese leaders are liberal by heart. And it's actually dangerous to Taiwan's own health and safety.... * There has been a failure of modernize the US military, it will take years to restock stinger missiles and javelins, and rebuild the industrial base, to fight China, they need to "national mobilization" of the US MIC... * China believes the Americans and their "sidekicks" are trying to hold China down * Biden prioritizes Europe, mistakenly Jennifer Lynn (36m): * a fundamental question, we skipped over alot, the US is Americans take a huge risk to prevent China become regional dominance, do we need to do that? (I lol'd when I heard it) * Taiwan is spending nothing on defense; Japan is making alot of noises but isn't actually spending on defense until 2027.... A old professor guy (45m): what's the actual down side of Chinese achieving some kind of economic hegemony? What's the down side of backing away from Asia to avoid nuclear war? (the questions were not answered) Back to Colby (55m): * The current administration's foreign policy is a disaster, because they should make Europe less depend on the US not more dependent. US should spend the source to prepare for war with China, let European NATO handle Russia. * There is no military force that matters in a war with China in the first island chain so we should rule that out * Many British political class keep coming to Washington to make US focus maximalist aim to Europe, but only 4 British aircrafts participated in the raid to Yemen, the British army is the smallest since before Cromwell (LOL) * "How is it okay for me, an American to spend 3% of my income on defense, and Japan spend 1-1.5%, same for Germany? The audacity!" (well you don't actually spend that much on defense, you just print it) Like I said, funny stuff stephenthinkpad has issued a correction as of 19:18 on Jan 26, 2024 |

While homosexuality was decriminalised in 1997 and removed from the list of psychiatric disorders in 2001, same-sex couples cannot marry or adopt children. Many are still forced into conversion practices and there have been reports of cases of young trans people being sent to boot-camps for “re-education”. i can guarantee you that there are far fewer lgbt people being abused in chinese prisons than there are in american prisons just because theres fewer people in chinese prisons in general but even on a per capita rate theyre still almost certainly better than us on that metric

Tuvalu's pro-Taiwan leader loses seat in national election https://www.rnz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/507691/tuvalu-s-pro-taiwan-leader-loses-seat-in-national-election The pro-Taiwan leader of the Pacific islands nation of Tuvalu, Kausea Natano, lost his seat in an election closely watched by Taiwan, China and the US, partial results showed on Saturday. Tuvalu, with a population of about 11,200 spread across nine islands, is one of three remaining Pacific allies of Taiwan, after Nauru cut ties this month and switched to Beijing, which had promised more development help. Natano had pledged to continue support for Taiwan, a diplomatic ally since 1979. Another leadership contender, Seve Paeniu, has said diplomatic ties should be reviewed, with the new government deciding whether Taiwan or China can best respond to Tuvalu's needs.

Benagain posted:Deaf genocide, shameful There actually are many deaf people who think attempting to reverse deafness is a eugenics program against the disabled and the destruction of many varied cultures with their own languages. I can kind of see their point, if cures aren't effective for all deaf people it will lead to further isolation of those remaining.

I mean the deaf community thing is pretty complicated, there are populations in the world (martha's vineyard is one iirc) where deafness is so common that it's a pretty major influence on the culture and community of the area. I'm not an ethnologist or anything but I can't say that I am too confident on the continuance of an ethnicity based on a curable disability. This kind of thing doesn't exist for blindness because of how much easier it is to live without hearing than without sight.

Homeless Friend posted:china could start ww3 by restricting neodymium exports. this is the processing required to refine it, it also has to be tailored to the rock composition of the mine, insane amount of waste byproducts, etc lol Incidentally, China is basically the only serious game in town for solvent-based rare-earth refining, recycling, etc., and the situation is similar for Pt group metals. If you have a process that involves high-purity Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Pt, Pd, Ru, Re or precise alloying thereof, then the supply chain probably has a critical node in China that cannot be replaced. That's the funny thing about US/west technology-based restrictions aimed at China. At best these are temporary speed bumps, and as the CEO of ASML said, the laws of physics are the same in China as they are in the Netherlands or anywhere else. The material conditions, though, they are not! China has vastly more leverage, and the US isn't really doing anything about this other than pissing, whining, and throwing tantrums.
