Have you heard of Fermat's principle?
Are we still posting immersive sim achievements? Because woohoo, Prey Mooncrash is complete!

Was a pretty cool and addictive roguelike-meets-immersive-sim experience! I can definitely understand some people not enjoying it because of the tedium: even I was getting a wee bit bored near the end with so many repetitive aspects like unlocking story objectives and then doing the actual story objectives afterwards. I also felt like some of the conveniences like the summonable storage operator and pre-run loadout purchases could get a bit overpowered and kill the scrappy improvization and individuality of the characters that I loved. Finally, I was surprised that there wasn't quite as much weaving interconnectivity as I would've wanted: it's really only the mimic portal that creates some ordering. Nevertheless, had a great time, especially at the start where the different character archetypes really shined and I got to experience so many of the powers that I didn't touch in Prey!

...oh, the achievement posting was for EYE? I never finished that, but here's my rarest one (for some reason):

There’s no way to customize cloud save stuff right?

Tekken 8 is awesome because it cloud saves my online record, button profiles and custom characters.

It also cloud saves my graphics settings so when I jump on my Steamdeck I have to reconfigure everything.

I wouldn’t mind writing a giant launch script to load specific graphics but I’m assuming you can’t do that.

I don't know if there's anything you can do as a workaround, but unfortunately that's on the devs not listening to Steam's stated best practices for cloud sync. It'd be rather trivial for devs to exempt graphics options from the sync, but so many of them don't.

As a horrible hack, you might be able to set the graphics options to read only on all of your devices, if there's a separate .ini for them or something.

I would advise against even looking at the Part One package because it doesn't have the content from 2 and there's no companion packages that will get you the missing content.

Amazing they "simplified" everything into World of Assassination but they couldn't help themselves but keep the DLC in the Deluxe Edition which I don't think is even appropriately named for what it is.

It really does not have autosave. Saves are manual and at dedicated save stations, but they are everywhere. It's addressed in the game lore.

A lot of people got really angry at launch when they went into the game on the hardest difficulty, and died at the tutorial boss about 30 minutes in and lost all their progress.

The first Nier didn't have autosave and some people complained when they assumed it did and quit without saving, losing progress. So in the sequel they fixed that by telling you that the game does not have autosave and you have to save manually.

i'm not going to do a mega picture post, just text this time. here's what's coming up in february. ALSO as I mentioned before, Steam Next Fest on Feb 5th! I'll include a couple of January releases I missed last time.

Poppy Playtime Chapter 3 (Jan 30) - This is some spooky game for children that is very popular on youtube. A studio I worked for was having to incorporate him into cartoons just to try to game the algorithm. There's a little sliver of my life for ya

Eastward: Octopia (Jan 31)
- A life-sim spinoff of the 2021 ARPG that everyone agreed looked really pretty but then only 10 people actually played for more than 5 minutes (I will get to it eventually)

Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash (Feb 1) - One of those anime fighting games that I assume is in a 3D arena (at least based on the developer's last game about My Hero Academia). This one is based off a very popular ongoing shonen anime. I learned at one point that the JJK fandom and the Demon Slayer fandom hate each other, though I'm not sure how true that actually is. But I have seen angry forum arguments about how one is great and the other is mid

Persona 3 Reload (Feb 1) - A remake of everyone's favorite "it's not anime if I like it" JRPG from the late 2000s. Play SMTV instead, yeah it's on Switch and it runs at 20fps, I don't care

Suicide Squad (Feb 2) - Whether DC/WB Games likes it or not, this disaster is happening and no one can stop it. Rocksteady apparently spent the last several months removing gear scores from the game. Probably an oversimplification but still. I don't think that was the main reason people didn't like what they saw, it was just a symptom of a greater unfixable problem. An early frontrunner for my newly minted award: "Redfall of the Year".

Helldivers 2 (Feb 8)
- The sequel to the co-op twin stick shooter with a cult following has switched to a third person shooter, but hopes to keep the same tone as the original. We'll see!!!!

Fight Crab 2 (Feb 13) - Calappa Games only makes one type of game: aquatic animal battling. Ace of Seafood, Fight Crab, Neo Aquarium, and now a sequel to Fight Crab which was probably their biggest game. It looks, of course, very silly.

Ultros (Feb 13) - Very cool looking Metroidvania with a funky 70s psychadelic look to it, both in aesthetic and color design.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden (Feb 13)
- Don't Nod won me a lot of respect with Jusant, but this is a harder swallow, a highly ambitious narrative action RPG (I assume this is by the Vampyr team?). The setting is interesting, but I don't quite feel the intimate personal touch to what I've seen compared to other projects of theirs.

Islands of Insight (Feb 13) - I could best describe this as 'puzzle MMO', sort of a new take on Myst Online/Uru. I'm very interested in this one.

Lysfanga: the Dream Warrior (Feb 13) - Quantic Dream's new thing is publishing indie games, because that way no one has to see the word David Cage and have a viscerally unpleasant reaction. This game comes from Sand Door Studio and is a strategy hack-and-slash where you have the ability to clone yourself by rewinding time multiple times and forming an army of.. yourself.

Arzette: The Jewel of Fairmore (Feb 13) - Many retro games seek to bring nostalgia for the "better days" of gaming (note my quote marks), but very few-- in fact, I'm willing to say just this one game-- would be willing to remind gamers of the Phillips CD-i. Directly inspired by the Zelda CD-i games, Arzette has intentionally crude hand-drawn pixel animation cutscenes, awkward mixture of spritework and painted BGs, and-- wait, John Linneman from Digital Foundry worked on this? Okay. I can't knock a game for 100% delivering on its intentions. It feels like the real deal.

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered (Feb 14) - A remaster of the original PS1 trilogy of Lara Croft games, done in the same style as the Quake 1/2 remasters. Aspyr, you might recall, was originally working on the KOTOR remake before major development problems happened, so this might be a situation where you wait on reviews?

Helskate (Feb 15) - As was mentioned not too long ago, Helskate's a kinda cool looking mix of action roguelite and skateboarding. I don't care for roguelites but I do like genre mashups.

Goat Simulator 3 (Feb 15)
- This month's release from Epic Jail is Coffee Stain returning to their roots. Did you know Coffee Stain published Deep Rock Galactic? Did you know Coffee Stain is owned by Embracer? Did you hear about how Embracer has been shutting down nearly every studio? Not asking these questions for any particular reason.

Recolit (Feb 16) - Pixel narrative adventure about an astronaut that crash lands and discovers a literal ghost town. Cute art... the demo was fine. It's probably going to all be a metaphor for something or other.

The Thaumaturge (Feb 20) - Narrative turn-based CRPG set in Warsaw by the developer of underrated stealth rpg Seven: The Long Days Gone.

Balatro (Feb 20) - A "poker roguelite" that I've heard is pretty decent? I think people have recommended it in here. An updated demo just came out yesterday for the upcoming Next Fest.

Slave Zero X (Feb 21) - A "sequel" (ie 'let's just take this old IP for clout') to a Dreamcast mecha action game, this more resembles a straight-line Strider 2 with a lot of DMC comboing.

Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story (Feb 21) - The final Riot Forge game (the initiative is ending) comes from Lazy Bear of Graveyard Keeper fame, and is an isometric craft-heavy RPG. Will it have a thousand tech trees like Graveyard Keeper? I dunno, but it looks cute.

Yohane the Parhelion - Numazu in the Mirage (Feb 21) - How did this Love Live spinoff get MULTIPLE licensed games? I don't even think the anime did particularly well!! This is a StS-like, and the UI is... well... uh, it's pretty similar, I'll say that.

CorpoNation: The Sorting Process (Feb 22) - One of those dystopian adventure games with a fake OS. I do like the look of it, it reminds me a bit of Cliff Johnson's games for the original Macintosh.

Nightingale (Feb 22) - Gaslamp-themed survival crafter (yeah I know, it's kind of a popular genre these days) where you travel through portals to different realms. I'm not sure why all these survival devs chose to release their games this close together, but I guess by the end of February, maybe some of Palworld's crazed attention will die down..

Open Roads (Feb 22) - This slightly cursed narrative game was originally a Fullbright (Gone Home) production until Steve Gaynor was outed as an abusive boss. Since Annapurna loves to shield abusers, the best outcome was that Steve wasn't allowed near the team and the game is now credited to the Open Roads Team rather than Fullbright. Hope it can manage to escape that long dark shadow.

Escape Simulator: Magic DLC (Feb 22) - IDK why Red Dead Redemption 2 was nominated for Labor of Love, but Escape Simulator certainly should've been. Pine Studio has gone above and beyond with the game, releasing all sorts of DLC packs with new themes for the community/workshop to use, as well as free rooms for various occasions. I do think this is the best escape room game out there, just because of how much the community has done with it.

Dark Forces Remaster (Feb 28)
- Aspyr may struggle with remakes/remasters, but Nightdive is no stranger to them, having shepherded those previously mentioned Quake remasters, as well as the excellent Shadow Man remaster, the System Shock 2 remake, and many many others. This should be no different.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake (Feb 28) - I'm not sure that this game needs a remake (unless it doesn't work on Win11? idk) but here it is. I guess if it's been at least 10 years you have to have a remake.

The default graphics settings in Enshrouded are cursed. Anyone playing should set the resolution scale back to 100%, having scale enabled with DLSS also active means you're upscaling twice and depending on what your native resolution is you'll get something that looks somewhere between slightly blurry and looking through a dirty window. I'm on a 4K TV and it looked wretched.

If you were getting close to 60fps with default settings you'll need to adjust other settings to maintain that, but going from 68% render scale w/ graphics on quality mode to 100% w/ graphics on balanced or performance is an upgrade anyway.

Probably an oversimplification but still. I don't think that was the main reason people didn't like what they saw, it was just a symptom of a greater unfixable problem. An early frontrunner for my newly minted award: "Redfall of the Year".

My first thought is "There's no way it can be worse than Redfall" but before Redfall came out I thought "There's no way it can be worse than Anthem" and here we are.

That's loving hilarious.

For the record, 68% render scare with Quality DLSS on a 1080p is giving you 480p is your real resolution.

I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.
I have my computer in the basement, and want to play Steam and other games in my living room with the best possible specs. Everything would be connected with Ethernet. What's the best way to set this up? I have a Steam Deck, would getting a dock be good enough, or should I look into some other hardware?

I've lost twice, I've failed twice and I've gotten two dishonorable mentions within 7 weeks. But I keep coming back. I am The Trooper!

I watched one of the gameplay videos for Suicide Squad and it just looked kinda boring? The city felt empty, a lot of time moving in an uninteresting urban sprawl killing samey-looking goons with repetitive flashy moves of your math gun while a lot of flashy gibberish blew up on screen.

It is kinda insane that Rocksteady is behind this given they made one of the all time best game trilogies of all time with some of the best gameplay ever, but well

Why would an ambulance be leaving the hospital?

Are you thinking you'll stream from your gamng PC up to the Deck that would be docked to the TV?

I do this using a Chromecast with Google TV dongle with the Moonlight app. I am continually impressed with how well it works even over wireless. I don't know if it would also work with different hardware, but the Google hardware is cheap if it doesn't. It may even already be inside your smart TV.
