NET income. Dude probably has $1,000,000 per month expenses listed to offset his entire income so that he is 'broke' in the filing. I bet he has a ton of assets, just not in savings (like that huge NY apartment he was trying to sell).

When I was younger, and foolish, I asked someone "okay, what did the nazis do that was socialist?" and of course the proto chud was "they took away peoples guns and freedoms!" and because i thought it was possible to argue with those people at the time, I pointed out that that's not socialism, but I was too ignorant to understand that they just mean "people i don't like" when they use these words, the actual meanings don't mean squat.

I honestly don't think America will even start to fix itself until Evangelicals are completely removed from positions of power. Their entire bonkers insane worldview means they'll drag everyone down into doom because because they decided that their interpretation of the bible means exactly this and they will force everyone to either conform or die. There seems to finally be some pushback against them, but mostly because they've gone completely nuts and aren't just complaining that everything isn't about Jesus like they used to, but like trying to overthrow the government.

After the 2018 Blue Wave, there was some thing being bandied about showing that White Evangelicals were on the decline and would no longer be the force they have been in politics in… 2024. :eng99:

I know there’s a lot of anecdotal stories about people leaving their right-wing churches during COVID due to them going completely nuts about masks and stuff, and we all know a big chunk of the chuds who very publicly denied COVID and then died from it on FB/social media had a tinge of Evangelicalism, so maybe? And there’s not a lot of anecdotal evidence about people up and joining the White Evangelical movement over the last few years, but I kind of feel like we’re in for more of the same ol’ poo poo.

Could be, but this is from a court filing by Rudy, and I doubt that he has a normal paycheck with 'net pay' listed. In any case, he couldn't afford to live how he lives if that number was a real number, unless he has a mattress stuffed full of cash that he's living off of and hasn't disclosed.. nah, he would never try to hide assets on his court filing.

There were a bunch of end/beginning of the year articles about how the largest religious group in the US is now Spiritual Nones, which is the unchurched/non-practicing Christians aka Cultural Christians. I think NYT did one that was specifically Trump supporters.
So on the one hand the decline is statistically measurable, and has already hit the point of unlikely return. But on the other, they have even less reason to give a poo poo about how un-biblical their beliefs are.

By basically any metric - church attendance, belief in God, religious self-identification, etc. - Christianity is on the decline in the US. The US has long been an outlier among developed Western nations in terms of its religiosity, but that's changed a lot just in the past two decades. And the histories of other Western nations tells us that this decline is probably irreversible; once a nation loses its religion, it tends never to come back (former Communist countries are a special case which only partially disconfirms that rule).

There are caveats, though. Firstly, Evangelical strains of Christianity have actually bucked that trend and grown in recent years (most notably during the Trump presidency). Secondly, a decline in mainline Christian adherence doesn't necessarily correspond with a decline in religious nominalism. People still hold onto the label of "Christian" even when that doesn't correspond to any particular religious beliefs, or commitment to any particular religious institutions. Here, though, it has an exclusionary, nativist sense. When people say that 'we are a Christian nation', 'we are guided by Judeo-Christian values', 'we must abide by Biblical teachings', etc., this has nothing to do with any particular ethical or spiritual commitments, the only goal is to set up clearly defined in-groups and out-groups. The label of 'Christian' is nominally religious, but obviously in an American context is also bound to particular notions of nationality and race designed to exclude the 'Other'.

In some ways this is more pernicious than Christianity proper, because it doesn't demand anything of the adherent beyond hatred of those outside the group. I live in Europe, and I can tell you that most of the right-wing dickheads espousing 'Christian values' have never set foot in a church in their lives. So religion proper is in decline, but the dark, bigoted shadow of religion is going to be with us for a while yet.

It's a shame how the combination of financial factors in this country make it difficult for people to save, but honestly people who are more well-off also have issues with savings. The rule is that you should have 3 to 6 months worth of expenses socked away in your non-retirement savings account. I have a full year's worth. (And I don't want to ever have to touch it. Let it keep earning that 4.5% interest plz.)

I honestly think the decline of Christianity in the U.S. is tied to the George W. Bush presidency. A bunch of kids my age and younger grew up in these hyper-Christian households where W. became an avatar of their religion, and was presented as infallible all the way up until 2005, then everything crashed. He was exposed as a goober in over his head with Katrina, it finally became conventional wisdom that he had lied us into Iraq, the House Republicans were exposed helping hide a pedophile, and then the economy crashed hard. I didn't grow up in a Christian household, but my wife did, and yeah... a lot of those Evangelical kids whose entire lives was wrapped up in Christian private schools and mega-churches have just run away from that poo poo.

God is supposed to be infallible, but politicians will always be very fallible, and in tying W so tightly to their movement, they accidentally made God fallible by association. Now they've gone and done the same thing with Trump, so we'll see how that goes for them.
