Not really relevant at his level of inherited wealth. He could have done nothing other than maintain his dad's apartments - or stopped after the trump tower development - and easily lived the billionaire playboy image he played up to the media. Instead he went in over and over again on failed investments that were based more around image than profitability until he got to the point where he had to play a clown on TV for the cash flow. And because america, he was able to leverage his kayfabe rich person image into the highest position of power by throwing in some xenophobia and authoritarianism.

I believe it's been calculated that if he'd put all that inherited money into index funds he'd be wealthier than even what he claims today, let alone what he actually has.

He pointed out various hotels and talked about their history, number of rooms, how the expanded and changed over time, who the owners are and other random trivia about them.

He took absolute glee in pointing out the Trump hotel and saying that Donald Trump was too shady to get a casino license in Vegas.

My understanding is that the NV Gaming Commission is heavily populated with real estate types who'd already had interactions with Trump.

Lol there’s a great scene in Silicon Valley where a tech guy who lucked into $1.2 billion dollars early is bragging about making $200 million more since then, and someone does the math that the returns were only about 1% a year & not keeping up with inflation, and he would have made more only putting his money in CDs.

That extreme talking with hands thing that Trump does reminds me of a guy from my father's job, who does the same thing continuously due to being addicted to cocaine (or some drug along those lines) for decades on end and is unable to control his arms properly unless actively using them for work. I wonder if Trump always did that.

I can't find the quote, but Maggie Haberman (NYT) has always used specific language like "Trump has said he's never done drugs". Just like how donnie has claimed he's never drank, but per esquire:

quote:

One, named Laraby, says in a new book about Trump's rise, The Method To The Madness, that Trump would come into the New York nightspot Spy with modelling agent John Casablancas and drink beers - "usually Miller Lite or Bud Lite" - over the course of an evening. "He drank his beer out of the bottle," Laraby says in an extract published by Vice. "He would nurse his beer. Even if they were there for hours, he would have three beers at the most."

Michael Ault, who owned Spy Bar and another Manhattan hangout, Chaos, remembers it slightly differently: "He was drinking champagne or vodka, a liquor and not really a beer so much, but I could be wrong on the beer, I just never saw him with one."

So yeah, big ol' liar and I can see him ignoring his brother that drank himself to death and went coke-heavy.

Wealth is not about the amount of dollars in the bank/index fund/stocks etc.

It’s about how you can influence the world, and being a real estate tycoon gets you some measure of influence versus just being passively wealthy.

It's not really the money you give to the campaign, it's the "jobs" you give to family members, the free rides on luxury jets and stays at exotic locations, the gifts you slide under the table. Just on the ledger Senators look cheap, but the real going rate is immense .

Similar proposal of rule for federal jobs, though not entirely sure it is yet in execution:

https://www.opm.gov/news/releases/2023/04/opm-releases-proposed-regulations-to-prohibit-use-of-previous-salary-history/

A good change in general, but particularly since when jumping from one federal scale to another (i.e. NAF to GS or NH or whatever) sometimes jobs with near-identical qualifications of scope of work and supervisory roles would have pretty different pay.

AreWeDrunkYet

That's a great change. Since most tech jobs went remote and CA and a couple other states already require this, that's pretty much standard for those postings. It's a very good indicator for when you should not waste your time.

Silicon valley is an amazing show, and extremely accurate the excesses of peak VC tech startups. There were several times they had to tone things down compared to reality because the actual amounts of money being slung around without a care were too unbelievable for TV. If you want to see what VC tech startups look like in 2014-19 to a person who hasn't drunk the koolaid, you have to watch Silicon Valley.
