The pub. For the pub.

Pocketable card games + dice games work are the best for this.
Small box games, like have been recommended above are also good.

the original ask was for meatier 5-player games that work well in a bar setting. between the player boards, the market row, and the tokens, bloodborne card game has almost as large of a table footprint as challengers, with the added logistical complexity of requiring a good space to chuck dice. good game though.

Yeah that's fair. I've only ever played it on BGA so I forgot how much space it actually takes up.

I can’t think of a worse game to play in a pub than any of the tiny epics. Tons of fiddly pieces and table space for what are extremely mid games at best.

Should I pick up Nusfjord or Agricola if I want something that can scale well up to 3-4 players? I've already got All Creatures Big & Small and I really like it FWIW

Nusfjord plays a bit faster, but you'll recognize more of the stuff in Agricola. Agricola has a thing where because of the way new base spaces come in it's not quite the same game from 2 to 4 players; I think it's that clay is the rarest resource for 2-player, reed for 3-player, and wood for 4-player, but that's more of a concern at elevated levels of play.

My boardgame group meets in a pub, so I'm assuming you mean a pub with tables. We've found that games like Dream Home, After Us and Alien: Fate of the Nostromo can just about be played with five people at a table for four if we pull up an extra chair.

I mean, it sounds awesome. If you've got 11 other TI fans, that's terrific and sometimes rare despite its popularity. I'm more curious as to the 'how' of the league, how it scores, number of rounds, etc.

oh, 6 games per year, you have to attend at least 5, your victory points are tallied from your best 5 games. you can attend more than 6, but then your score from the 2 games in that slot of 2 months of games is added together and divided by two (so averaged). no limits on race choices, player with the lowest score chooses first, except that you may choose Nekro Virus only once this year, and the player who scores the highest VP on their Nekro game is crowned the Nekro Lord of All.

Is that the one with faint lines between the squares and barely readable numbers? I hate that score track!

In terms of good bids, very hard to say. The 10 can be worth a ton...unless other stuff is more important. Getting a solid foothold on the tracks is great, but competing makes you sad.

That's a great system. I like that it encourages everyone to play to win all the time. Most games I've played there's always one player so far behind they just decide to say gently caress it and space-risk their neighbor.

Edit: gently caress it, gonna steal the idea and see if I can convince my friends to do four games per year.

Hey so, have any of you played Gloom and Frost haven?

Me and my wife played GloomyH with some friends, and while it was great fun, it did get 'very' samey. I wasn't that fussed, enjoying it right to the end, but my wife got a bit bored with it, and then the plot was kind of just there, and the ending fell incredibly flat. She was finished with it long before we stopped playing.

I accidentally saw a couple of the frost haven characters a while ago and was totally smitten, they look SO much more interesting than any GH character, and I loved GH! But, for a few reasons, including my wife not really fancying any more, we never bothered

Just recently, a new couple we know have shown an interest, and they're going to get and play it, and asked if we wanted to. I'm instantly in, and my wife has said she'd like to because she wants to socialise, but isn't sure.

Without spoilers, does Frost haven have more level diversity than GH? GH was super one note, you pretty quickly had seen all that levels could possibly be.
Does FH have more, like, managing your home town? You got achievements in GH, but they didn't really do anything. She enjoyed all that admin side of things, and stickers, but not really the payoff. It sounds like it does, with the whole, build your town thing, but in practice does that actually amount to anything? Is there more 'game diversity' I guess, or is it just elevated by the more complex champs?

Hey goon! Do we know Frosthaven? Oh goodness yes. Come by and visit the Gloomhaven/Frosthaven thread!

https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3840191

So to make it short - yeah. There's a ton more character and scenario diversity in Frosthaven. The Outpost phase is a lot more central and there's some elements that make it more than simple admin. I think the payoff is definitely there, and from what you've posted, I expect you probably will too. :)
