Anyway in entirely unrelated news I hear that this war crime of a song is number one apparently, huh

There is apparently a rap song with a guest part by Ben Shapiro. It’s as bad as you think. Mostly it’s just him whining about the WAP song from two years ago. They covered it on Chapo this week but it’s a rap song by a conservative Canadian rapper named Tom McDonald, who is very angry about US politics.

I think another thing that's happening is that the dipshit white dude who's ultimately a good guy with a lot of rough edges, is starting to realize he's no longer amongst fellow travelers within the conservative movement. This is the guy who's maybe a bit aggrieved by the campaign the left has engaged in for a while demonizing tobacco and alcohol. He realizes they aren't great, but still loves a beer and a cigarette, and doesn't want to be preached at for his vices. He might not be PC, but will say things like "gently caress, whatever gets you through the day..." He's in favour of low taxes, but mainly because he thinks the government is full of self-serving corrupt assholes, not out of any ideological opposition to actually helping people. He'll say "why can these foreigners learn to speak English?" but if he's having a conversation with someone from, say, China and they make a grammar error or something, he'll say "well, poo poo, you speak English a lot better than I can speak Chinese." He probably wasn't a huge fan of masks during the COVID pandemic, but got vaccinated without making it some sort of political issue because, poo poo, it's a disease and you don't want to get it. This is a fairly normal guy. You are probably imagining a guy you know that matches this description. I will call him the Jeremy Clarkson conservative, based on the character he plays on television whilst appearing as himself. This was the bread and butter of conservative politics -- an Average Dude who mainly just wants poo poo to be the way it's always been. He's starting to look around at the conservative movement and say "christ, those people are out of their minds." That's what the conservative movement is headed toward, and it's the one thing they can absolutely not afford. These people are still assholes from time to time, no mistaking it, but my god the left can reap this crop at the moment.

Felix Biederman and Josh Ettingermentum have done pioneering work on the “you got way too loving online and weird and you scared the voters” thing the GOP has going on. They’re also collaborating on something (probably a podcast miniseries) on the history of right wing media, which will be good as hell I suspect. Go read Ettingermentum’s substack, he’s americas only accurate AND likeable elections wonk.

"Love is love" is a wonderful sentiment, but sometimes the better way to reach This Guy is to say something like, "so, he wants to gently caress asses. What business is that of yours? He's not going to gently caress your rear end, so just relax." Sometimes you can't be "nice." I have a Racist Uncle, like many people do, and he was ranting on and on about how if Obama won then "Black people would think they're 'entitled'", and my dad quite simply said, "entitled to WHAT? A normal life like you have? Why shouldn't they be?" And, at the same time, I've also called my dad out on his own bullshit. It's not inherently disrespectful to call people on their bullshit, especially when you know deep down they aren't bad people. Then, more than ever, you need to call them on it.
