Killers of the Flower Moon was in fact way too long but it was not supposed to excuse Leo's character, the point of his character is that being a dumb dupe for murder is just as bad as being a mastermind

He's a dimwit but absolutely not a lovable one lol

there's a difference between laudable and lovable. I haven't seen Flower Moon yet but many of Scorsese's films make us confront what it is that makes us find guys who absolutely suck on paper likeable, entertaining, even sympathetic people.

Anyway Robert de Niro's character was also doing the country-drawl dialect and was very obviously not sympathetic. Leo was playing a dumb guy who talked like that, but it wasn't supposed to be excusing him for his part in everything and the way the movie ended shows this

there's a kind of escalation in terms of how obscene the rewards being reaped are between Goodfellas, Casino, Wolf of Wall Street. The crimes get bigger and more lavish and fly more directly in the face of "the Establishment" I guess. And since those movies, with Irishman and this one, it seems like he's more interested in exploring the banality of the mechanisms of crimes that don't fly in the face of the Establishment. Those crimes aren't usually written as big flashy stories with big flashy interesting characters, they're about turning something horrific and evil into Business As Usual.

Yeah, someone described De Niro's character as "casually evil" and I think that's accurate. He's a businessman who sees people as revenue sources, and sometimes he needs to have them killed to make the money come out of them, so that's what he does, and he talks about it the same way he'd talk about, like, selling a cow.
