I've only watched it played but it seems like being cruel to your pals is entirely optional. Like the pals naturally want to help on the base when they're cared for, the "cruel work" mode is something you have to toggle. Which means people just like doing it.

I actually find that part kind of funny, humans have a huge natural resistance to being captured, and are absolute garbage at working on a base and have no abilities to use in combat. They grant an amount of experience when captured that could be rounded down to zero. You *can* capture them, however. They are counted as pals in all respects (code wise), which means that you can sell them to the pal merchant or butcher them, but again you get essentially nothing from doing so.

Let's Game It Out used to be a fun channel where he would break games in hilarious ways during his early entry to YouTube, but eventually his work turned from playful cartoonish antics to outright cruelty... Which is not fun to watch even when the victim is just a bunch of pixels on a screen.
