Excuse me, I'm gonna need you to elaborate on this.

It's a SM urban legend that there's a desk in the airport in Austria for people who think they'd booked a ticket to Australia.

The fact that it's so disturbingly plausible says a lot about how stupid we tend to think the 'average' person is to not be able to tell the difference between 'Austria' and 'Australia' and also how easy it is to gently caress up travel.

But honestly, yeah, a society where everybody is used to things like transporter portals and reprogrammable matter would probably look, to an outsider visiting for the first time, like Harry getting to Hogwarts of Mario actually trying to navigate the Mushroom Kingdom capitol city in the Mario movie.

It's not uncommon for people travelling in Canada to end up in St John NB when they wanted to go to St John's NL.

Also I had a package that got routed to the Netherlands, when I was living in Newfoundland. Hooray for having only 2 characters for both Country and Province.

I don't know what lesson I'm meant to learn from space turbo-hitler being 'reformed'. It's just really uncomfortable that history's greatest monster is now part of their "found family".

Like, it's an 10000x version of 'handing it to the taliban'. You can see the production bend everything around the fact that Yeoh is cool and wants to do a Star Trek. It's just hard to reconcile.

It's especially frustrating because the easiest and best path forward for that character was right in front of them the whole time and it's Dukat. They could've just done the Gul Dukat arc again, complete with the mid-seasons good guy fakeout and heel turn. Even with these writers the basic structure of it and Michelle Yeoh's performance probably would've carried it through just fine or at least better than what actually happened.

Just imagining them doing a version of Dukat's late night call to Kira about sleeping with her mom, that would've been worth it all by itself

For contrast, in Stargate SG-1, Teal'c is the former right-hand-man of a big bad dude. Even that show has the werewithal to reveal / retcon that he hated his boss for a long time, and was working to undermine him and protect innocents in secret .

Star Trek, working with the advantages of 20 years hindsight on this and a budget that would rival any, can't manage to jump out of the corner they've painted themselves into. In a series with multiple good/evil copies and clones and mirror universes and and and, we're still seeing that someone that genocides planets and eats sentient species is OK if they hang out for a bit.

What they did with Dukat was dreadful and ruinous of the character. You couldn't pick a worse thing to claim they should replicate.

I liked the idea of it in DS9, it actually seemed like a truly independent thing from Starfleet who basically refused to stop them. I think about the scene at the end of the series when Bashir and O'Brien are in Sloan's mind and he tells them "there is no room with files and secrets like you see here" and that there is no central leader or place to take out. But since then, it has basically become the Federation Tal Shiar or Obsidian Order complete with having liason officers and such.

I've always maintained that if a Section 31 plot absolutely had to be done, I'd want to see the actual official Federation intelligence service dealing with S31 as a domestic threat.

The cartoon character Dukat in the last season and a half was bad, but the idea of him serving Cardassia during the occupation, and then pretending to serve Weimar Cardassia while being responsible for its downfall, that was good.

In STO's story they've started to introduce elements implying there's a kind of hidden war of Starfleet Intelligence trying to take out Section 31. From a recent intel-focused ship release:

quote:

The Cyclone Intel Patrol Escort [T6] is one of the few ships operated directly by Starfleet Intelligence. Often overshadowed by the salacious Section 31, Starfleet Intelligence cultivates a reputation as honorable bunglers–in a democracy, any success is a policy success and any failure is an intelligence failure. Just one more artificial narrative in a labyrinthine onion of same. Subtle movements in the shadows are not done for glory, fleet actions are happily left to Starfleet itself, should time allow. If time doesn't allow, there's the Cyclone.

[...various bits about the ship and its abilities...]

While not quite a starship-sized stun weapon, the Cyclone is the tool of choice when armed intervention is required. When Section 31 establishes a presence, it's often Cyclones that come calling. The survivors make excellent recruits, and indeed most Section 31 personnel never understood the darkness they served. In a galaxy full of shades of gray, it can be hard to tell.

It bugs me that even the space battle game gets that Section 31 are unambiguously bad guys to be destroyed and yet the show.

My only interest in Section 31 is watching Lower Decks lampoon the hell out of it at the first opportunity they get.

They already got a good dig in with pointing out the absurdity of them having special black comm badges when they're supposed to be a secret clandestine organization. Give me more of that.
