It's conceivable that Carmen's godmother is also literally her aunt. There's nothing that stops someone from being both; my godfather is one of my uncles, for instance. If the aunt is on Carmen's father's side and unmarried, it wouldn't even be that weird for them to share a last name even if we're dealing with a traditionalist group where it's assumed the woman will take the man's last name. Of course, nobody would ever actually call an aunt by that name. And this is probably not the actual explanation, because that would be giving Prickly City too much credit.

It's an interesting fact that the Democratic Party was historically linked to both white supremacy and immigrant advocacy, but it's disingenuous to claim that these were necessarily the same Democrats, especially since many of those in the former camp were explicitly Protestant supremacists as well, which played a huge role in the second KKK. But I don't think that's even what he's doing here? It's just a tortuous link between bad things the Democrats did in the past, and bad things they are doing today. Deeper cut than the usual right-wing fare, but it doesn't actually make sense when you analyze it.
