what the unemployment rate means: "Employed people are those who did any work at all for pay or profit in the reference week"

what is happening in hourly retail work: full availability will get you four hours a week

one logical inference, which is backed by data and has been written about before: the unemployment rate includes an awful lot of underemployed people who "have jobs" but still can't make a living

yet idiots continue to insist: "the unemployment rate is at an all-time low, so it's obvious you can easily get a $200k job in the midwest unless you're stupid and lying in this thread"

You know they collect different measurements of unemployment, right? The people you are talking about would mostly be counted as un/underemployed by U6, which is also near historical lows:

If there's even a single person in an entire 12-state area making $200k in an ops job, then the outrageous claim that "$200k ops jobs don't exist in the Midwest" is provably wrong. The existence of "only" dozens of job postings for those jobs advertising salaries in the 200s is plenty, since even just one proves the counterfactual.

The salary bands shown are generally the range that everyone in the department (including management) makes and someone being hired is guaranteed to be on the low end of it unless it's a management role. If the salary bands for an ops job posting is $60k-$200k that means the department director makes 200k and everyone else makes 60-70k, middle management is probably around 80-85k and exempt

Beyond the pay not being what's listed on indeed there's also the fact that if indeed has 4 dozen postings that means there's one real position that's actually available for someone to get, that they need to compete with every single other person looking for an ops role in that city to get.

You absolutely cannot judge the job market based on job postings since only around 1.6% of postings are real openings that the company wants to hire someone for these days. And that's not even a made up number that's straight from the bureau of labor statistics. (Though that number is from 3 months ago I don't know how different it is right now). The rest of the postings are resume farming for the company to use if they ever find themselves wanting to hire someone in the future, fake postings with no intent to hire meant to to improve team morale without actually crewing more, or employers holding out for literal "dream candidates" who are massively overqualified and talented but willing to work for a fraction of the market rate.

And these are the things that employers actually admit to to the BLS that they're posting job openings for, there are other things going on like literal illegitimate data harvesting for spam calling purposes, and companies that don't exist looking to hire someone to start a business and do 100% of the work while the person who posted the job gets all of the profits (this one is particularly prevalent in marketing jobs right now. Tons of "marketing firms" that don't actually exist who want to hire "marketing specialists" to build the entire business from the ground up including sourcing all their own clients, taking on all of the liability and workload and only getting a small $40k salary)

I finally got instagram to stop putting anything but cat videos on my main feed. The more I interacted with posts in order to block them, the more instagram would think I was wanting to see that content. So when I cat vid came up, I interacted with it and trained it to only serve me that. They’re also incredibly inoffensive and occasionally cute so whatever.

The explore page is beyond saving though, I stopped using it years ago because it stopped serving me pics and started serving me marketplace ads and reels.

I noticed if you have a connection of friends’ stories you want to see, tapping on the rightmost friend and working “backwards” to the left avoids ads, for now.

I’d delete this stupid app but I communicate with more distant friends and green-bubblers there. *sigh*

There’s not really phds in data science. It’s not actually a field, but just basically a job title with vibes of computer-heavy statistics. Most employers just want a PhD in whatever quantitative-heavy field, although you need previous DS experience for any DS job nowadays.

The moral of the story is not to do a PhD.

somehow this reminds me of my high school internship at Hewlett-Packard. I started out as a gofer for the testing/QA division, but I was very quickly moved into a hybrid role helping the actual design engineers on the floor. I clearly remember a group of them razzing/encouraging me, saying "Ok look, the EE BS isn't that hard, but you need to get into a good school and your grades matter. Once you get done there, its basically another four years for your EE MS, and its really hard but you're smart, you'll be fine. Once thats all done, you can come work with us!"

:stare: Hewlett-Packard shuttered that plant a year later, spinning all that crap off into Agilent, and I decided that computers was the career for me.

Look to your left. Look to your right. Only one of you is going to pass this course.
When I was a teenager I used to work on a horse farm. I did whatever needed to be done, most of it hard physical labor. Repair fences, clean poo poo out of the stables, shovel gravel into wheelbarrows and move them around. The old man who owned the place was cool, but his wife always complained that I wasn’t working fast enough. There were a lot of horse people who ranged from just plain odd to hostile and mean. Horses charged at me sometimes, and a backhoe I was in nearly tipped over and killed me. I made a hundred dollars a day for each 7-4pm day. I’ve also worked in a magnet factory where I glued pieces of metal to magnets for 8 hours a day.

The worst job I have ever had was teaching English at an American public high school.

lol you cannot create a new contact in iPhone from received text message. It used to be a default feature.

I asked someone to text me specifically so I could create them as a contact. Spent 5 minutes looking how to do it. Went to apple forums where everyone has this issue. One helpful suggestion is to make a screen shot and then import the screen shot as the new contact photo, and then manually type in the number. LOL.

Truly amazing Apple. I know that it is I who have failed you, since I cannot figure out the brilliance of this change.

Update, found the "new and improved" way to do it:

In the text, click the phone number. Then click "info". Then scroll down through several blank, gray screens, and there's the option!

Apologies, Apple, I now realize those blank gray screens are time I can focus on breathing meditation.
