Picard and Discovery are both cancelled, and literally no one watched the latter beyond season 2. SNW is still going but S3 is delayed probably into 2025. Everyone knows that Paramount+ is hemorrhaging money and is never going to survive as an independent service long-term, and Paramount itself is actively courting buyers. So, the current era of Trek’s days are probably numbered. Continuing to work through the Best Picture nominees. Poor Things: Whips. Difficult to digest though. Bella takes the infantalized sexpot trope to a wacky extreme. She's surrounded by pervs, but is either so young or just so unusual as to be un-traumatizable. I have no idea what this film is trying to say about this. It's a very bizarre film. Like, she starts sex work because "I need sex and I need money" so it's a win-win? I feel like victims of predatory older men would take this movie as telling them they should just choose not be traumatized by their experiences or something. Emma Stone knocks it out of the park. Anatomy of a Fall: Really fascinating. I'm sure they overdramatized the hell out of it, but if it's even halfway accurate, the French trial system is completely alien after only seeing depictions of the American trial system. Sandra Huller is loving phenomenal in this. My favorite performance out of the ones I've seen. I'm pretty sure the kid was full of poo poo in the end. In the other flashback, we see the characters use their own voices, but in his suddenly remembered conversation with his father, everything his dad says is the kid's voice. No one has bothered to cam rip Zone of Interest, so I guess I won't be seeing that anytime soon. Best Picture rankings: 1. American Fiction 2. Poor Things 3. Past Lives 4. Anatomy of a Fall 5. A tale of a character rising above awful circumstance is not an inherent message that everyone can or should rise above that circumstance in the same way. If a "baby with a sex drive" rises above "the shackles of the patriarchy," the movie is not automatically saying "See? Any woman can do this." It might! But that requires additional narrative evidence. All it's saying, at base, is "This woman can do this."

He's a real shitheel obviously, but also never seems to pose much of a threat and doesn't escalate after the kidnapping, instead just sinking into sad-sackdom. 2. Life of prostitution, which presents her with a few negatives but seems to mostly suit her fine. The madam is bite-y, but never cruel. She's told she'll be a pariah, but we never see that. She's initially put off by some of the men, but then institutes a policy of talking to them beforehand and that solves that problem seemingly completely. 3. Her ex-husband, who poses the only real threat in the movie because he is willing to use violence. It's a fantastical setting in more ways than just the mad scientists because the structures of power and violence imposed on women in the time period this resembles are just nonexistent. So, in the end, what's the character really overcoming?

Yeah, it’s like the queens gambit in that it’s ostensibly a female power fantasy of overcoming social and legal barriers; but if you boil it down, men are either entirely supportive of her, easily defeated, or the entire power structure of the real world has been elided past in order to let our hero succeed. I would like to see some actual obstacles or challenges that are shown, not just alluded to and the blasted past
