Part 159: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter: Witness Intimidation The poll was kind of a trick question. Did you catch the option at the bottom? The right answer, is to admit we have no proof. And really, we have nothing here. Or at least, nothing else we have is something I can currently use against Gant, with what I know now. Music: Silence Hmph! See, Udgey? In that case... Sound: Realization Wait, what? Were we supposed to present something after all? Music: Suspense What? Sound: Light Bulb quote:Original line: "I don't gamble unless the stakes are high!" Doesn't make as much sense. Sound: Light Bulb Okay Udgey, I'll leave the rest to you! Sound: Whack Sound: Clapping Gant fades out, and we fade to black... I warned you earlier, Mr. Wright. ... Music: Silence Sound: Guilty You can see the health bar in the upper-right, with the last two health sections glowing red on and off. Normally, that's a sign of an impending penalty (and shows up on crosses and certain other prompts). Sound: Wipe Sound: Drama Pound As we panic about an impending penalty, Edgeworth intercedes... quote:So what if we tried to present something? Sound: Realization Up until the last moment I thought there would be some dramatic objection and entrance from someone with more evidence to prevent Gant from leaving (maybe Ema?), but apparently we really are just going to let him go. Instead, we'll go after someone else... Mr. Edgeworth? What do you mean!? Sound: Light Bulb We haven't yet had the honor of hearing her testimony. (A lady who knows the truth... Another witness!) But Chief Gant has invoked his right to refuse to testify! Sound: Whack Sound: Realization Music: Suspense raised in this trial. Someone right in this very room! Mr. Edgeworth! Who is this person!? Sound: Whack Hmph... Why are you asking me, Your Honor? Have you forgotten? Sound: Gavel Mr. Wright. Does such a witness exist? (But we can't just stop now!) Only one person makes sense here, the hints aren't even really necessary. In order to get our client off on the murder charge, we are going to have to get her to confess to conspiracy instead. The defendant... Sound: Realization Music: Silence Ms. Lana Skye!? Sound: Drama Pound + Stab Sound: Desk Slam in accordance with a certain someone's orders! Hmm... Mr. Edgeworth...? The prosecution has no objections, Your Honor. Sound: Gavel quote:Get this choice wrong, and... Music: Trial This court is now in re- Sound: Realization Huh? Sound: Drama Pound Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone? Listen good, Lana! Sound: Objection (He's talking to Lana!) there will be terrible consequences. Sound: Realization ...! Sound: Light Bulb That's right... Sound: Guilty I guess we're just letting murderers openly threaten witnesses in court now. Ah! Sound: Light Bulb (This isn't good!) Sound: Stab 2 Just something to think about... Music: Silence All right, then. Sound: Light Bulb I've got a lunch date to meet. Sound: Whack Even the judge can't believe what he just saw there. ... Okay. If there aren't any further objections... Sound: Light Bulb this court is now in recess! Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture Yeah. Thanks to your help, Edgeworth. Detective Gumshoe! Sound: Light Bulb Ha ha ha. I'm not a "detective" anymore. Oh yeah. Sorry about that... Sound: Stab Music: Silence At your office! Sound: Damage 2 My office...? Sound: Light Bulb Sure! Sound: Objection I'm in. Gumshoe is chicken soup for the soul. Sound: Realization Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture Still... Looks like we're all out of moves now. Sound: Objection It's not fair he has the right to refuse to testify! Sound: Whack Hmph. Settle down, Wright. Remember what the judge said? Sound: Wipe There are certain risks to be considered! Sound: Realization "Risks"... What did he mean by that? It's simple. the opposite also holds true. Sound: Realization Kind of a like the Fifth Amendment in the US. If you "plead the fifth" to avoid incriminating yourself, you also lose the right to speak in your defense. Wait, who was speaking there? Music: Ema Skye ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme Ema! Are you okay? Sound: Light Bulb I've been listening to the trial from the gallery. (So she heard everything that's been going on.) Um, Ema... I'm sorry for what I said before. No, don't be. It was the truth. She finally knows why her sister has been acting so strange the last two years. "Relieved"? Yeah... Now I finally know what really happened. Sound: Realization To think that all this time... And she did it all... just to protect me. everyone who knew her... said she changed. Perhaps... it was easier that way for her. What do you mean? She must have shut herself up deep inside... (That must be why she became so cold...) It was all my fault. Hey. Don't go blaming yourself now. Sound: Whack If you want to blame anyone, blame society, pal! Sound: Whack I... I see. Sound: Light Bulb Music: Silence Ema, why don't you wait h- Sound: Realization ! Sound: Light Bulb I want to be there... when Lana tells the truth. I guess it makes sense, but I wasn't expecting a separate chapter here. Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here So I guess Gant won't be testifying again. Will this episode be the first time we "convict" the murderer with someone else on the stand?

They do take that sort of thing into account, and it's worth noting that the trials we go through just get our client considered "Not Guilty" for the crime that they are specifically on trial for. Follow-up trials and sentencing are outside of our purview.

I've just been assuming that it does and the children aren't actually at risk of getting the death penalty for the crime of attempting to protect someone and causing an accidental death in the process, and the game just glosses over it instead of Phoenix expressing concern over the trauma and stigma they'd be inviting onto themselves. though on the other hand, both von Karma and Gant are vindictive, corrupt sons of bitches, and maybe they do have a way to legally murder children for daring to cross them

I imagine even if she technically gets off easy by the legal system itself, Ema being found guilty of murder (manslaughter is still murder, just the "least bad" kind, is my understanding) would mean severe social consequences. Remember how Yanni Yogi was found innocent by way of insanity, but it still effectively destroyed his life due to sheer social stigma? Ema might be facing the same kind of fate even if her actual sentencing is light.

To be fair, Yanni was an adult, and he was a security guard that was there to help protect people. And the insanity plea does mean that he admits to the murder. So now you have a former armed guard who went insane and murdered someone he was supposed to protect. That's a whole different level of stigma, and it's hardly surprising that he would have major consequences after that. Ema has many mitigating factors in her favor. Lana doing crimes is probably worse for her than the murder thing.

On topic, present Lana's written confession Edit: Tree Reformat, you might actually be thinking of manslaughter being homicide. It is definitely homicide but again, that's not the same thing. Also, laws tend to weigh intent heavily. In places not japanifornia, you're probably not going to jail if you interfere in a fight trying to save someone's life, and they die as a result instead. The only real thing that could trip you up is if you did so by some crazy pants means that any sane person would have noted as lethal to them, like running over the knife fight with a truck.

Part 160: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter 2: Falling on a Sword Yes, the name of this new segment is "Trial Latter 2." Music: Silence Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel Music: Trial Now then... Ms. Lana Skye. You are the Chief Prosecutor. But Mr. Edgeworth... you already know everything... ... Please provide the court with your testimony, Ms. Skye. Fat chance of that. Of course... The truth... Sound: Light Bulb ... Sound: Gavel Now then, your testimony, if you will. (Everything hinges on your testimony.) Music: Silence Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato I worked alongside Gant for years... I fabricated the evidence two years ago all by myself. Sound: Wipe Music: Silence Wow. So many lies in there. She's just going for it. Hmm... Are you sure about this testimony? Subtle sprite change with the shift to the side-eye look for the last sentence. But Lana...! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Realization That's what I've been telling you from the beginning. Sound: Whack (But what if she's telling the truth?) Sound: Light Bulb She's not. I know my own sister. Ema responding directly to Phoenix's thoughts again... Deep down, she's really screaming in agony! ...! Sound: Light Bulb The defense may now begin its cross-examination. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato Mr. Wright! My sister's lying! Sound: Whack She insists she fabricated the evidence by herself. Sound: Whack (I've got to get Lana to talk more.) I worked alongside Gant for years... How many years, exactly? Ever since I made senior detective. Senior detective at 24? After law school? Detective Gant and Detective Skye were legendary partners. I personally saw them testify in numerous cases. Damon Gant was a respectable detective. That's why... There's no truth to this "blackmail" theory. Sound: Desk Slam But think about it, Ms. Skye! You didn't murder Detective Goodman! Sound: Objection You still don't get it, do you Mr. Wright? ...! I stabbed Detective Goodman with a knife. And... I fabricated the evidence two years ago all by myself. Did you do so to help your sister? Joe Darke was a serial killer. I didn't want that incident to ruin her life. Sound: Desk Slam But what she did was justifiable self-defense! That's not the point. That's why I couldn't forgive him. Lana... When I found Prosecutor Marshall's body, I rearranged the crime scene. You say you did this all by yourself? Yes. ... Music: Silence It seems I was the first person to discover the scene. Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident Sound: Realization So Neil Marshall somehow got stabbed in the back with his own blunted knife? You're going to need a better story than that, Lana. Sound: Desk Slam What!? Sound: Wipe That's only a situation you dreamed was "possible." ...! Sound: Light Bulb Something like that... If that is so, what happened to the other murder weapon? Sound: Realization Oh, Sound: Light Bulb that was lying on the floor a little distance away. It was probably knocked away in the struggle. Mid-blink / angry Phoenix, you decide. All just to protect me... Music: Silence Sound: Gavel So when you found the scene like this, what did you do? Music: Questioning - Moderato Yes... I was so busy pressing on everything, I don't think I even realized this one was a new statement at first. It replaced the one we just pressed on; we of course are just going to press again. Music: Silence Sound: Stab 2 Well, that's one way it could have happened, I guess? And then you moved the body? Sound: Stab 2 Sound: Desk Slam But why!? Why would you do that...? Music: Questioning - Moderato You've always had a good head on your shoulders. ...! Hmm, both seem like good questions. I guess I'll start at the top. But why did you do that!? Sound: Whack ... Sound: Gavel The reason Ms. Skye fabricated the knife! We get another new statement, though this one doesn't replace the previous one. It's just an extra insertion. We know what to do with new statements. According to your testimony, Kind of a weak explanation. How else would Neil Marshall have ended up with his own knife in his back? I felt the most effective way to get him convicted, Sound: Realization That one feels like a true statement, at least. It makes more sense that they broke the tip off on purpose as additional evidence, than that it naturally broke off when planting Darke's knife in there. So you... Yes. Because I hated Darke for what he did. Hmm... Now, if we go back and press on the previous statement again, we get back to this same choice and can go with the other option this time. It was where you deduced it was - by Chief Gant's desk. But the body was found by your desk. Sound: Wipe The reason for that is simple... Sound: Gavel The reason Ms. Skye moved the body! We earn yet another new statement; this time it replaces the one talking about why she planted the knife, that we got in the other dialogue decision. An interesting mechanic here - two mutually exclusive statements, that can only be seen by making a choice during a press on a statement that itself can only be seen by pressing on the statement before that! "Pieces of the jar..." You mean...? In order to show that Darke committed the crime... So... when you first found the body, the jar was already... Of course. It had been shattered to pieces. Sound: Realization Sound: Wipe It would be clear that you're lying about what happened, you mean? I don't get what her angle is here. Maybe she's arguing that Darke could have been seen as accidentally killing Neil Marshall, and they wouldn't be able to convict Darke of actual murder and execute him? I see. ... What's the matter, Ema? Sound: Realization Music: Silence But I have a feeling there is more to it than that. Music: Questioning - Moderato Anyway, I committed this fabrication completely alone. My only motivation was to get Darke convicted. It had nothing to do with Ema. So you rearranged the crime scene... How many times do I have to tell you, Mr. Wright? Ema didn't do it. Period. (Are you so desperate to hide that fact...) Yes, we all know that. Except maybe the judge. In any case... There's nothing I can do to make up for my actions. That might be the first true thing she's said today. The sudden music stop and blatant hints from Ema make it clear that this statement has the contradiction. I've openly commented about the timeline of this jar's shattering before, but it's come to the forefront here. How could Neil Marshall have written Ema's name in his blood on the jar, if it had already been shattered? Music: Silence Ms. Skye, I understand how you feel. If that truth were to be exposed now, the past two years of your life Sound: Desk Slam a significant contradiction within your testimony! Sound: Objection Music: Investigation - Core A contradiction... in my testimony? Sound: Light Bulb You testified, and I quote, That's right... Do you have a problem with that? It's a simple oversight, really. Sound: Realization ! Sound: Light Bulb In order for the victim to be able to write his message on the jar, Ah... Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence Sound: Objection Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel Order! Order! Your Honor! It would appear... We may be missing something critical here! (Something critical...?) Sound: Realization Chief Prosecutor. about the truth towards which we're headed. What...? Sound: Light Bulb Just tell us exactly what you saw. Sound: Gavel Very well! The witness may now continue her testimony! ... Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato I immediately noticed the blood traces on the jar, To be safe, I wiped away the blood. The fragments were large, so I'm sure I got them all. Music: Silence Huh. That sounded almost like she was telling the truth. Which means... Gant got to the office first after all? And smashed the jar himself, then hid a piece in his safe as blackmail material? Or maybe Neil smashed the jar and hid a piece before he died? Sound: Whack Well, yeah, she said she did all the evidence tampering/forgery. I wasn't Chief Prosecutor at the time. She didn't think Darke was the real murderer. Sound: Realization Sound: Gavel Very well. The defense may now begin its cross-examination. Sound: Testimony 2 Your sister's really putting up a fight. Sound: Realization Still, she's not doing this the right way... ...! You have? Are you going to share them with us? I guess Phoenix is ahead of me this time. I immediately noticed the blood traces on the jar, So the jar was already broken? It certainly looks as feeble as the defense's case... Sound: Realization (But not as feeble as the judge's judgment...) Sound: Realization Snarky comments aside, there's something there in Lana's statement. If Ema's picture of the Blue Badger really was the jar flying through the air, how did it not shatter into pieces at that point? Had Neil already been stabbed and written out his message before that happened? Did it have a "soft" landing on Darke's head, knocking him out? you didn't investigate what was written on the jar pieces? Normally I would have, but it was dark in the room and I didn't have time to check it out. No. If I had known... Sound: Realization Okay, surprisingly good point there. (Well, that helps my case...) Lana... you'd do that for me? Sound: Light Bulb It seems you two might make up yet. You must have been in a hurry. I was. This is rather shocking... To be safe, I wiped away the blood. What do you mean? Sound: Light Bulb If you really thought Darke killed Prosecutor Marshall, Sound: Realization ... Lana... I only had a few moments. The fragments were large, so I'm sure I got them all. But how could you see with the power out? It should have been pitch black in that office. A detective is always prepared, Mr. Wright. Sound: Light Bulb I never miss anything. I got every last piece. She seems very sure. And yet we know one piece didn't get wiped. So Gant must've hidden it away first? All I could think about was wiping them clean before they were discovered. So you illegally rearranged the crime scene? Yes. I don't have any excuse for my actions. I've treated you so badly all this time... (It's not too late.) (There's still plenty of time to make up...) They might have to make up through the detention center glass window at the rate Lana is going. Well, that's all we have. It seems pretty clear to me what's wrong with this testimony, but what evidence proves the contradiction?

Absolutely, not just showing the full playthrough but even dialogue for possible mistakes, alternate options, it's incredible. But this case really tests your resolve to do an LP like this, it's very much appreciated. I remember thinking at this point, Lana can drop the act, the dark secret about Ema is out! I mean, there's still a difference between Phoenix personally convincing Ema that she did it, and a court of law recognizing and ruling that she did it, even if the latter doesn't result in further legal consequences for her. Lana still has reason to deny everything, even if Ema doesn't believe her.

Part 161: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter 2: Traps within Traps Seriously, though, how many times have we presented this drat jar now? Anyway, despite Lana's statements, it's pretty clear that one piece - the one we found in Gant's safe - wasn't wiped clean. We can actually present the jar on any of Lana's last three statements. Music: Silence What? In the Chief's safe? Sound: Realization But how...? (I knew it! She really didn't know!) I guess she wasn't paying attention in the last part of the trial. Sound: Wipe Sound: Realization Music: Suspense But the witness just testified... Sound: Whack Yes, which leaves us with only one explanation. Sound: Desk Slam On the night Prosecutor Marshall was murdered... Music: Silence Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Objection This case has me all tied up in knots. I need to stop believing the serial liars. Music: Objection! Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel x 3 But couldn't the defendant have simply missed a piece? Sound: Whack Sound: Desk Slam I'm afraid that's unlikely. Sound: Objection That may well be, but everyone makes mistakes. Even I once wasted an entire day Sound: Whack Sound: Desk Slam Have you forgotten, Your Honor? Sound: Realization Oh, that... Sound: Light Bulb There's no way a name could have been written on a shattered jar. Sound: Objection I hope you're not implying this "person" was Chief Gant. At the time, he was looking Sound: Desk Slam ... Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence Sound: Objection Sound: Damage 2 Sound: Drama Pound The judge freakout using just his normal head shake sprites... Sound: Gallery Sound: Realization Okay, favorite sequence of the game right there. Sound: Realization Sound: Realization Question: What is this action called? Fabrication of evidence. More like hiding of evidence, but okay. Music: Investigation - Core Sound: Stab In light of what happened afterwards, isn't it clear? What happened afterwards...? The jar was already in pieces when Lana found it; did she still know it said "Ema" on it? Otherwise I'm not sure why she would think Ema had killed Marshall, rather than Darke having shoved him into the armor's sword. Ema and Darke were both unconscious. Maybe Marshall was still alive, and told Lana? Determined to help her sister, she sought Gant's aid. sparing Ema. And therein lies the reason! Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Objection Sound: Stab 2 Hell Lana just bit her thumb so hard she spurted out blood. N-no... I... I did it on my own... Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Whack I... I can't watch you suffer any more for my sake... Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Objection Don't believe anything Mr. Wright says! Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Realization Slander! We are paragons of truth! ... ! Sound: Light Bulb (Wait a minute...) Music: Silence Sound: Wipe Sound: Guilty Huh? Is something wrong, Mr. Wright? Lana... may be right after all. Sound: Realization ! What do you mean, Wright? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Desk Slam Ms. Skye! Please testify once more! But... then Ema's accidental killing of Prosecutor Marshall... Sound: Drama Pound Oh! Wait a minute, that's right! If Gant got in there ahead of Lana, who knows what he messed with! Hey, maybe the parallel to Mia's killing is even more exact than I thought, and Gant actually faked Ema's name on the jar, too! Maybe Gant even killed Marshall himself, like I originally thought! This episode is so twisty with its fakeouts! Music: Suspense B-but, Sound: Light Bulb I do remember knocking over Mr. Marshall... Ms. Skye! If you will... Sound: Whack There's nothing to be afraid of anymore. Sound: Realization ...! This cross-examination may not change a thing. Sound: Desk Slam ... Very well. I'll testify... Sound: Realization Music: Silence about what I really saw. Sound: Gavel Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Allegro When I arrived, I found Mr. Marshall's body impaled on that suit of armor's sword. That's why I erased all the evidence that linked her to the murder. But if it all really was a fabrication, Ema might be innocent! Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence I don't see anything there, unfortunately. Maybe pressing will reveal something. Unbelievable! The body was impaled on the armor's sword? ... Actually, I do have proof. Sound: Realization ! Sound: Light Bulb Lana you devil. What? Sound: Light Bulb To me!? I thought it might be needed. Sound: Whack Lana must have known... Sound: Gavel Music: Logic and Trick (I don't remember receiving any pictures from Lana...) I seem to remember getting something from her then... Let's check that evidence again! Sound: Light Bulb The game cheats hard here. We're forced into the Court Record, but without the option to present anything. Instead, we have to look at this book Lana gave to us via Gumshoe earlier. Outside of this special prompt, looking closer at the book just shows the same page of text as when we first got it. Now, though, we can physically examine the book. Our cursor lights up on the back... Sound: Realization Well looky there. Sound: Realization One fact immediately jumps out - Neil Marshall's vest is indeed missing part of it, around the same size as the piece of cloth we found earlier with Ema's handprint. Neil also has blood all along his front, likely coughed up from being stabbed in the lung. Now, notice how the blood is present on his shirt, behind the hole in his vest? (There was also no blood on the piece of cloth we found, despite a well-preserved handprint.) Wouldn't that mean he coughed up the blood after Gant had cut out that part of his vest? Meaning, Neil Marshall was still alive when Gant was in the room? Music: Suspense Oh... Oh my... Sound: Realization Sound: Light Bulb No other detective saw the crime scene like this... Sound: Select Jingle You know, Lana, this day would have been a lot faster if you'd led with this information at the beginning. Ah well. *gasp* Mr. Wright! Sound: Light Bulb (The cloth we found inside Chief Gant's safe!) Sound: Realization Sound: Wipe Sound: Realization Whosever fingerprints those are must be the real murderer! (What!? But those fingerprints...) Music: Silence (They're yours, Ema!) Sound: Desk Slam Anyway, let's get on with the cross-examination. Sound: Gavel Very well. The defense may now begin its cross-examination. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Allegro Sound: Objection To be clear, that was not an unusually quick press by me. Sound: Shock 2 x 3 Sound: Wipe Sound: Drama Pound quote:Fun fact - I went back and tried pressing or presenting on that first statement of Lana's cross before the interruption, but the game didn't allow the input. It's a fake cross! Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone? Come now, Udgey. Chief Gant... Sound: Realization What, now you want to make me out as the bad guy too? I'm afraid it's too late for that. What? You already declined to testify. Sound: Realization ... (This must be that "risk" we were talking about earlier...) Just sit back, relax... This system needs a magnificant rear end in a top hat like Edgeworth to fight against it. Music: Silence Sound: Damage 2 ...Boss phase 2 complete? ... Ah, so what? Sound: Realization You think I'm worried? ...! Sound: Light Bulb Sorry to disappoint you, Sound: Realization Music: Suspense What do you mean? The evidence will do all the talking for me. Yes, that's true... Wait! You mean... Sound: Light Bulb No, I don't. Sound: Whack Sound: Clapping But someone does. "Someone"...? Sound: Realization Ah, Gant probably thinks he has us pretty well-trapped now. But his trap is just going to be the very thing that proves him guilty. ...! Why have you been keeping quiet about it? You do have something to show us, right? Conclusive evidence that leaves no room for doubt! Sound: Drama Pound I-is this true, Mr. Wright!? Sound: Whack ... Sound: Wipe I think I'm ahead of Phoenix for once. We'll have to let this one play out. Sound: Gavel Sound: Whack (What do I do now!?) (Should I present that piece of evidence?) I'm not even going to pretend I don't know what evidence he's talking about. But is now the right time to show it?

I wish they had given the Judge a full-on breakdown animation. That would have been great.

Part 162: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter 2: Perfect Timing So the Nay's have it. But why? Well, let's hold back on this one. Your Honor, Music: Silence I don't have any evidence I can present at this point in time. Sound: Realization What!? You lie! Sound: Damage 2 Sound: Whack Chief Gant? The conclusive evidence! Sound: Objection Sound: Realization Music: Investigation - Core Mr. Wright! Why don't you show them? We found it together! Oh, I see. It's because you know the truth, don't you? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Desk Slam What are you talking about, Chief Gant!? Sound: Whack Sound: Wipe It looks like part of it's been cut out for some reason. Sound: Realization You mean, you had this...? Sound: Light Bulb In your safe? Sound: Stab have been concealing evidence! Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Gallery ... Music: Silence Impressive... Sound: Realization ...! Sound: Light Bulb Well, I can't just let you pin me up as the murderer. Sound: Whack Sound: Clapping Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone? What!? You mean you admit to it!? It then occurred to me that I could use the situation to control Lana. I knew Lana. If I made it look like the blame lay with her sister... Sound: Realization So you "assisted" Ms. Skye! I told her to arrange all the evidence. Sound: Drama Pound When I tampered with the crime scene, I hid two pieces of evidence. Sound: Light Bulb This was before Lana arrived at the scene, mind you. Sound: Objection But... why? Sound: Whack For insurance, of course. Sound: Realization "Insurance"...? You mean you were calculating that far ahead while forging the evidence!? Sound: Whack See this jar fragment? Sound: Realization Sound: Realization Sound: Desk Slam But if you fabricated all the evidence... Sound: Whack Music: Silence Sound: Objection Sound: Drama Pound + Objection Ho ho ho... That's why I kept one more item for "insurance." Sound: Realization Sound: Light Bulb Music: Suspense ... What are you waiting for, Mr. Wright? So you admit to it then, Chief Gant? but it's a lot better than being portrayed as a murderer! Sound: Realization Got you. Everyone catch what happened there? Sound: Gavel Well, Mr. Wright? What do you have to say for yourself? Sound: Light Bulb (It's been a long battle...) Sound: Wipe Penalty here, and I animated it so you could see what it looks like more clearly. Anyway, now is the right time to show the strip of cloth. Gant has admitted to being the one to cut it away from Neil Marshall and hide it in his safe. We're going to look bad at first, but Gant won't be able to escape what's coming. quote:If we instead decline to show our evidence a second time... Sound: Gavel All right then, let's see this "conclusive" evidence! Hang on everyone, it's going to be okay. Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence Let me verify this once more. On the day of the crime, Oh, yes! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Clapping At least you've finally brought it out into the open. There's a handprint on this piece of cloth! Sound: Realization Sound: Desk Slam This handprint on the leather... Sound: Objection ! Sound: Light Bulb You mean... Sound: Objection quote:Getting the evidence wrong here... Music: Telling the Truth Sound: Gallery Ho ho ho... You're as slow on the uptake as ever, Worthy! What? Sound: Realization ...! You mean you already know? Sound: Light Bulb M-Mr. Wright... Do you really know? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Gavel Whose fingerprints are they!? Very well. I'll tell you. Sound: Wipe Penalty on this choice, but you haven't really forgotten, have you? This whole setup stinks, but we have to bait Gant even further here. Ema? Ema Skye!? Sound: Objection quote:I tried claiming the prints belonged to Gant, but no luck... Music: Silence Sound: Stab 2 I'm sorry, Ema... But why... Sound: Drama Pound Because it's more dramatic this way! Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel x 3 Oh ho ho ho! Sound: Damage 2 + Clapping Sound: Whack + Desk Slam Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone? You're really something, Wrighto! Sound: Whack and you still tried to pin the murder on me! Sound: Realization So it's true. Tragic, but true. Sound: Objection Sound: Drama Pound Ms. Skye... you acted like she really didn't... Ms. Skye. It's not over yet... What!? Sound: Light Bulb I said this trial isn't over yet. Sound: Whack but your career too! ... That, my friend, is a serious offense. ... I'll have your badge, boy! Sound: Whack + Clapping ... Sound: Realization Aren't you going to tell us how it feels? ... Music: Silence Before I do that... there's just one little thing I have to clear up. Oh? And what's that? Sound: Realization What!? Sound: Light Bulb Chief Gant, you are absolutely right. It was Ema Skye, wasn't it? Sound: Whack I'm afraid that's not possible. Sound: Realization quote:Before we spring our trap on Gant, let's go all the way back to the start of this update. What if we'd just shown our evidence from the very beginning? At first, I thought it'd just shortcut and skip ahead to the same place, but... well, you'll see. Music: Suspense Sound: Stab 2 What is this fool babbling about!? Sound: Desk Slam who the real killer is! Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel x 3 M-Mr. Wright! This piece of cloth... Sound: Whack (Chief Gant, your tyrannical reign ends here!) It's (I assume) the final phase of the final boss of the game. What's our finishing move?

Gant tricking you into a game over is some good stuff, even if Phoenix kind of telegraphs a bit too hard what's going to happen beforehand. Then again, I suppose that's for the best if the player hasn't saved in a while.

I could swear we already determined that Gant isn't allowed to talk anymore after invoking his right to refuse to testify. So why the gently caress is he still up there talking?

He just barged in and started running his mouth, basically. And the judge is too stunned to kick him out.
