I am a dean so I see the results of screens and electronics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The students outright can't do mental math and struggle with basic arithmetic. Additionally, they have such a poor ability to focus that they fail introductory courses at an ever increasing rate which harms both retention and the students finances. Its good for me because it means the remedial courses are always full and bringing in massive amounts of  for the institution. These problems could be caught at the k-8 and highschool level if we wanted to fail students for poor performance and grow a spine when dealing with parents. I meet with the superintendents of our feeder districts fairly often and by large they agree but the problem is the funding they get is contingent upon their pass rates. They would love to raise standards and revise their rules but that means they lose what meager funding they have. I'm in STEM and I can imagine its even worse for my counterparts in the humanities. I think a good portion of this is cultural too because who's going to get bullied, A) the kid that states they can't do math or B) the kid that states they can't read?
