Just saw Asteroid City (theater movie night has still not occurred). A bunch of good parts but I'm not sure if the whole was very good. Filed the movie's main plot being framed as a play within the movie as "an interesting choice" until the end when it felt more like an excuse for Anderson to not have to figure out how to show Augie talking to his dead wife. A lot of the expansive cast (Maya Hawke's Catholic school class; the gifted kids for the most part) seemed like they didn't have room to really develop like they could have. The fictional behind-the-scenes stuff could have been axed in favor of giving them more to do imo. Tilda Swinton in particular felt like she was there out of obligation.

My wife is mad because the movie was too hard to follow, but I think I get the themes and metaphors (acceptance of the nature of the universe being totally inscrutable) even if I still don't have the knack for symbolism. What was going on with the fourth-wall-breaking writing school scene though, I didn't get that part

Also man Wes Anderson really does just snap his fingers and every actor in Hollywood shows up huh. Not Bill Murray this time though. No Wilsons either

Watched The Green Knight and it ruled. Gorgeous color-grading and it keeps the weird dreamlike qualities of some of the Arthurian stories by Malory that I've read. Fantastic soundtrack too.

Seattle Karate Vs. L.A. Karate
wanted to watch a short movie so saw Hitchcock’s sabotage which is a smooth 78 min and the move does a good job pushing the boundary at the time. pretty intense at times and weird, to a modern viewer, comedy breaks but there is a theme of laughter and jokes throughout the movie so I can see how it can still be thematic.

the shoehorned love story is expected and
the antagonist at one point is like “ I don’t want to hurt innocents “ but then at the end he’s a monster in his response to an event.

overall I think it’s a great early Hitchcock before we get into the real good stuff in the 40s.

I’m sure when it was released audiences were probably pretty gripped by the tension.

ten years ago today i was in the middle of nowhere guatemala and hadn't had internet in a few days. i got the cheapest motel possible and found a channel where they were playing a bunch of movies in a row. almost famous, charlie wilson's war, punch drunk love, capote. i loved watching a ton of PSH movies in a row while i was resting and wouldn't find out he was dead until i went to a netcafe the next day

watched Wonka, yeah it wasn't good but i also don't think as completely terrible as some said. 6.5 is about right. the thing that really kills it is the musical loving sucks rear end, and the aesthetics are decent but there's a lot of bad CGI. amazing how wide of a cast is in it though and the production/cast does a good job. if they didn't do a musical it'd add an extra +0.5 easily

not a bad lighthearted adventure movie to throw on while your sick and it's raining out. if you liked paddington, you'll probably enjoy it well enough for what it is
