GOPniks love Russia because normal people on the left who aren’t monsters realize invading Ukraine was evil and wrong, and therefore they must take the opposite position to the left, so now Russia is fine/good.

Most empires expand into their immediate neighbors, thats kind of how most of them worked.

StrangersInTheNight posted:Exactly this, which is why when leftists then took Putin's side in the Ukraine effort I was baffled. It isn't the 80s! They aren't communist anymore, in fact they're hyper-capitalist! Putin was more popular than Yeltsin among the Russian people bc he offered a touch more social services than his predecessors and made some nice parks at the start of his tenure, but it's definitely not anywhere near communism or even well-run socialism. When I moved to the US from Russia all the kids at school would ask me if I was a communist spy a full decade and a half after the wonders of capitalist shock therapy. Most Americans are very insulated from how the rest of the world works, but I will always admire the unflappable confidence in their world view

It should've been a reminder that, pre-communism, Russia was an empire for much longer than they were ever communist, and there's a whole lot of the oligarchy that longed for and worked for a return to that form - and they've succeeded. Supporting Russia in it's current incarnation isn't supporting leftism and communism, it's supporting a return to pre-communist imperialism where Russia expanded its' borders by taking control of its neighbors through force.

In early January, polling had Biden at 62-69%. He won with 96%. Pollsters are fundamentally missing something.

While people do the thing if polls I like are good while polls I dislike are actually bad it is fair to point out that polls are broken and have been since 2016 but you also got to remember the first guy to benefit from broken polls was you know Trump

I think polls have been broken a lot longer than 2016, that is just when it became undeniably, glaringly obvious.

So yes, it's a massive victory on both fronts to see an energized base rallied in a primary.
