Really interesting video on Soviet RTGs. It even includes the removal of the Georgian source that a group of woodmen found and used to keep warm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT8-b5YEyjo

The best way to escape a drowning machine is to get a grip on the bottom, hope you're facing the right direction, and start crawling out.

When he claims that the West only used RTGs for spaceflight, he's just wrong. The US used them for remote arctic seismological sites for monitoring nuclear treaty compliance. The UK also used them for lighthouses and navigational bouys.

The presentation is also pretty heavily dumbed down, like the part where he equates dust inhalation from chernobyl fallout with acute radiation syndrome. Like the intended target audience has a gradeschool-level of understanding so factual accuracy is a low priority.

Oh, just a slingshot, lol. I used one at my grandpa's when I was a kid, we were in town but a bit more ok since we were in a bigger field behind his house.

I'd pilfer our lead round ball supply since dad and I cast our own bullets for blackpowder competition. A .50 cal lead ball will embed itself surprisingly deep in a telephone pole. Dad refused to get me a pellet gun because they were too dangerous but I don't think he knew what I was up to.

Megillah Gorilla posted:A portage is also a bridge between two waterways." That’s a weird way to phrase it. Portage is when you take a boat out of the water, move it, and plop it down in another body of water. This can be as complicated as loading a ship onto a train, but for small boats like canoes or rafts, it’s usually just everyone who was riding the boat getting out and lifting it. It’s commonly done to bypass dangerous rapids. If it’s a popular river, there will be a defined, possibly improved path to take. And if someone puts a drowning machine in a river, they may be expected to maintain such a path. Platystemon fucked around with this message at 13:02 on Feb 7, 2024 |

Yeah, portage is basically when you pick up your boat, hump it over land a bit, and then put it back in the water. Most commonly done with stuff like kayaks where you can reasonably just pick it up by yourself, but Norse sailors were well-known to portage quite sizeable ships for several kilometers to get from the Baltic down to the Black Sea.
