Thanks for clearing it up. From reading this thread, I gather, half of us don't understand what "being aesthetic" means, and the other half maybe does but cannot explain it for poo poo.

Please tell us more about what words mean and how you don't understand kids these days. How did your letter writing campaign about people using the word 'bad' to mean it was good go anyway?

You obviously know what aesthetic means, so it cannot be beyond your grasp what the person means. There's no world in which you do not understand it, you're just being deliberately obtuse because you think it makes you seem cool/aloof I guess?

How many different ways can people shout “you know what it means!“ Without actually explaining what it means?

I’m pretty sure I know what it means and gave an example of what I think it means, but no one will verify if I’m missing some point to it. It’s just such a clunky word to use for what I think it means

I'd rather they got more weird with it like fly a 360° camera through the middle of a giant bacchanalian orgy where I can look around and see filth in every direction, come on VR porn directors use your imagination a bit

It. Means. Aesthetically pleasing. A recognisable look. That either exists or will exist if the person pulls it off. That the person was attempting. There are people with brain problems that don't struggle with this.

Are you trolling? And why is it working so well?

Many people did explain it but ok I'll take another stab:

You know how the word quality became an adjective in and of itself without needing a modifier - so something can be poor quality, high quality etc, but I could also say 'that was a quality meal'? It's the same as that

It's never need the qualifier, it's implied in the word itself. The sentence

quote:

I like furniture that is both aesthetic and functional

makes perfect sense, that's not a new construction

So if someone says they want to be aesthetic then it's understood what they mean. If they wanted to be an aesthetic then they would need to qualify it with which one OR it would mean they trying to start a new one, like what they're doing now is the foundation of a new style to them.

I get that she meant "whimsical," but it had to be explained to me. Because she didn't say whimsical. She said aesthetic, which is weird. I am honestly perplexed that you and others are baffled that I and others don't immediately know what a word means when it's used in a way I've never seen.

You wouldn't say "this meal is quality." That's the part that confused me. I know what aesthetic means. I've never heard anyone say they are aesthetic. Because it's like saying they are quality.

I know it doesn't need a qualifier in the adjectival form but I was just trying to explain it in a different way that might make them click because it seems people are hung up on aesthetic just being a noun.

I was going to mention this in exactly the same way too, because I can't stop thinking about that skit from mst3k where Pearl keeps describing something as "quality". The point being it sounds obnoxious and dumb and incorrect, which it is. . I think she was replaced by a pod person when doing that? Bunch of loving pod people.

This is evidently a British and US English difference because in the UK most people would use quality like that.

She doesn't mean whimsical, well not just whimsical. She means aesthetic, which is probably why she said that. The aesthetic she is going for looks pretty whimsical though.

Nothing in the video stands out as being particularly aesthetically pleasing or not, nothing that is done in it, or that happens in it, is recognizably trying and/or failing to be aesthetically pleasing, which is why it's confusing.

You're letting the loving marketing departments win! They started with putting "Quality!" in a gold star on the box because just like organic and a bunch of other poo poo, it's not an exact term that they could be pinned down on. Now it's entered common usage and the trail has been blazed for this "aesthetic" poo poo. A whole loving generation of marketers and promoters. What a goddamn waste.

I mean, I obviously know what the word literally means. If I didn't I'm currently using a tool that can tell me the definition of any word in any language, so instead of looking stupid on SA (too late!) I'd have just looked it up. What confuses me is how kids use the word. Has it become just a way of saying "I'm playing pretend on the internet, and what I'm pretending is that I'm somehow worth paying attention to while I contrive to look like I'm in a perfume ad?"

I think it started with vaporwave, people called aesthetic as in "aesthetically pleasing", meaning it appeals to taste. In that video she thought she was being aesthetic as in "looked good" but also "appealed to a certain aesthetic", which doesn't apply to just look but also structure, atmosphere, composition, etc. It can apply to styles within music, architecture, fashion, etc. Certain literary critics refer to themselves as "aestheticians" which basically just means they like good prose.

Honestly you could maybe substitute aesthetic with style and people will get your meaning, although I do think there is a subtle distinction. It isn't just kids trying to sound hip, they detect that subtle distinction in context for each word and use them accordingly.

Get used to it brother, words and meaning adapt, they always have and always will. Change is the only true nature of language
