But glass is a pretty good insulator so it just absorbed the heat and even if it had worked you now have an open bottle of very hot wine. There are so many ways to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew that are better than this.

Yeah if you can heat it evenly without creating a hotspot that melts the glass, the contents will expand and press against the cork until it pops or at least becomes easier to pull Which is the opposite of what they did right there

I can imagine a situation where you have a plumber's torch like they say at the start and no corkscrew, I can't imagine a situation where they have a kitchen torch (which is for like, toasting the top of a creme brule) and don't have a halfway decent wine key. If you drink wine more than once a month just buy a halfway decent wine key, something that looks like this.
