Fair share is debatable, as the rich kept their tax cut.

Those cuts actually don't expire until next year which will show up on the 2026 tax return.

Anyone who owed this year definitely needs to adjust their withholdings or they will be mega hosed

The tax cuts and jobs act massively increased taxes on R&D spending, contributing significantly to all the big layoffs going on at huge companies.

R&D is a competitive advantage of the US! says the propaganda

Well anyway, we passed a jobs bill that will eliminate jobs and will tax R&D spending, knowing full well this country optimizes tax spend above all other metrics.

It just makes looting the country easier. Change the formula bit by bit so that it's better to pull money out of the company than reinvest it

lol last time i was in a hd it was pretty much a chaotic warzone and like everything had been ripped open and like random fittings for a dishwasher hose taken but hoses still there, and just packaging strewn all over. far worse than kmart in it's late stage decay

anyways seems like you could still just yank those off the hook or cut them open, dont see the point. might as well let the 1/10 legit customers who want to buy a roll of duct tape or pliers get one instead of saying gently caress it and ordering off 'zon instead of waiting 12 hours for a floor worker to show up

Why not just close the store at that point? Like I can't imagine home depot profit margins are high enough to justify having to pay someone to walk around with every customer in the store.

Slow News Day posted:

I know this has been making the rounds, and anyone who isn't familiar with the technologies behind chipmaking will swallow it hook, line and sinker. Reality is of course more complicated.

Basically, the most common lithography technology today uses deep ultraviolet (DUV), which has a wavelength of 248-193nm and reaches its physical limit at 40nm node size with single exposure. This is totally sufficient for chips commonly used in gadgets, cars, low-end personal computers etc. but for anything more powerful you need to go smaller.

China is using a technique first demonstrated in 1983 called multi-patterning, which allows chipmakers to go beyond this limit to produce these smaller node sizes. This kind of works, but the yield (that is to say, the amount of defect-free chips produced) plummets and labor costs skyrocket. And even then, multi-patterning has limits as well. 7nm is about the smallest node size one can produce with it.

That's why every chipmaker in the industry pooled their resources in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology, which has wavelengths near 13.5nm and targets node sizes as small as 3nm if not smaller. ASML is the only company in the world that has managed to produce EUV systems for chipmaking - they are essentially a monopoly and are lightyears ahead of everyone else. The sanctions imposed on China prevent China from getting these advanced systems. And by advanced, I mean advanced. EUV chip machines are literally the most precise and complex machines humans have ever developed. From concept to implementation, it took ASML about 15 years to make one, and another 10 years to start producing them at scale.

Can China develop its own EUV chipmaking systems? Probably, especially now that they've seen it can actually be done (i.e. they can justify massive investment into it). But it will still take a long time - about 10-15 years is the most optimistic timeframe I've seen from analysts. In the meantime, they are going to have to resort to multi-pattern DUV, which like I said has serious shortcomings imposed by physics. They can get around the low yields by reverse-engineering the DUV machines they already have, but that's not easy or fast either.

All that to say: you should view all these "China is making advanced chips despite sanctions" stories with a grain of salt.
