Raven is cool and I think he has even more bullshit and tricks than M raven in 7. I started with 7 and used M raven a bit so I kinda like her design more but that might be bias. You could put together a list of like 10 of his moves that would get you pretty far in ranked. Some crazy knowledge checks.

Green rank used to be the "ok you get how this game works but now you're going to learn how deep the rabbit hole goes" rank full of gimmick spam and mediocre players who could somehow do the steve df2 combo perfectly but not punish conistently at all. Little salt incoming feel free to skip. Jesus loving gently caress this is the most obnoxiously swingy stupid rear end bullshit game I’ve ever played in my whole god drat life. One minute, I’m steady as she goes, not really winning as much as I want and that’s okay because I’m getting my Tekken sealegs etc etc but you know, punishing, hanging in, not really caring about the match as a whole cause that’s how it goes sometimes. And if the match feels informative or valuable or hell even sorta close I’m good with it. Then next thing you know I’m getting launched by something I didn’t notice, pancaked, trying to get up—yeah i know the getup options but I feel like I’m missing something here fwiw—and backed all the loving way to the wall, whereupon I side roll, regain some space, eat the same bullshit, or press into a string I didn’t know—yeah yeah—only to get smoked once more. And the loving players are unreal rude as hell. I guess the expressiveness of Tekken lends itself to people stunting in creative ways, which would be funny, but holy balls the unusual varieties of spam this game generates… phew. Like come the gently caress on. I got a long way to go, and I feel like I’m picking up the basics all right, but if I hadn’t played a whack of other fighting games already I’d probably have tilted and quit for all the weird poo poo you can come up against in this. And most frustrating is that I think the responses to so much of this are kinda bespoke to whichever string, whichever situation, whichever rear end stomping in specific I’m dealing with, which is great for variety, not so good for my patience. Anyhoo, I know the drill it’ll take time I’m gonna suck rear end for a while so on and so forth, but god drat I just needed to vent. I’m not the kind of person to get pissy about losing, genuinely. Not that I expect internet people to believe that but it’s true. This specific game, with its specific variety of nonsense, just seems to tweak me in the exact right way. Just gotta learn. Not much else to it. ok now that the sodium has reduced drastically ill be a bit more constructive about my nightmare session went in with three main goals: 1. learn to buffer giant swing to follow up after f1. this is of course about 90% success rate in practice and charitably 25% in matches, but it did improve a bit toward the end. managed to hit it at some point against most opponents 2. perform at least one combo that gets corner carry. actually pulled this off. was bog standard launcher into powerbomb f2,1 into a yakuza kick in the face but it counts 3. learn the timing of the follow up throws, b3 into leg drop as an example. failed at this. just kinda forgot about it tbh. all of this would be fine if i was someone who could stay zen whilst getting the poo poo kicked out of them but I am not that. a badly timed super that gets blocked and punished or not blocking low three times in a row during the same goddamn combo raises the blood pressure im also at the point where like 60% of my button pressing us purposeful and the other 40 is my lizard brain screaming PuSh BuTtOn when my mental stack starts tipping over. and when im learning something I tend to try it way too often and get poo poo on. which again would not be a problem if i didnt mind getting mollywhopped repeatedly but this bird you cannot change thank you for coming to my

Leverless EWGF update: I've decided to abandon the use right hand to press right + 2 while facing right method because I wanted a uniform method that works on both sides without switching hand positioning that much. After experimenting the best method I have personally is to think that I need to try and press 2 while pressing down instead of on down forward. I've gotten quite a few electrics, and I had small bursts where I did 2-4 of them in a row! I think this is probably the technique that'll work out for me in the long run. Only one session in so far but it's starting to "make sense" for me and I'm hoping that after sitting on it for a day or two I'll be more consistent. I'm feeling confident! That said... 1 frame off is still more common aaaaaaaaaaaaaa EDIT: Thinking about it a little...what if I went back to my initial method could make one of the face buttons left input and another right input.................................. EDIT EDIT: Wait hold on, am I tripping or does f, neutral, df+2 work? I feel like it works. Couldn't figure out how to embed, but here's a clip that clearly shows f, df+2 in input history unless I'm misreading: https://imgur.com/a/P7kxAX8 Artelier fucked around with this message at 09:35 on Feb 9, 2024 |

Oh for sure. This is day one of practice so I'm just going ham with the thoughts and ideas. I think I've settled on f, neutral, df+2, and mentally trying to press 2 during the neutral bit. Got it quite a bit at the end of the practice session, relatively easy to do the motion on leverless, and less taxing on my fingers too just doing two inputs instead of three. Got like 7 electrics in a row once so pretty happy overall. My end of day one note is that I'm definitely more comfortable doing it to the right instead of the left because towards the right I'm index and middle fingering while towards the left I'm fourth and middle fingering. But still can both ways, and got it in the few matches I did play. Whether it was wise to throw an electric then is a different story, but hey! Starting out.

Tekken has gotta have the fastest "we are SO back" to "it's so over" swings of any fighting game It's really fun, but especially while learning (which I very much am) you'll have some rounds where you feel like a complete idiot as you eat every string, finally decide to challenge and then get counter hit launched The replay system helps so much though. I'd really like them to add a "go to replay" button to the menu after a match so I can just immediately smash that button when I'm annoyed by whatever string I lost to. In the ten hours I've played the game I think I've spent a pretty equal split between practice mode, ranked matches and my replays lol

As I improved at those I had to break myself of the bad habit of gaining space at the expense of nearly, sometimes totally cornering myself. But the instinct to gain space is really strong even if I mostly broke the habits in those games. What that means in practice is I do the same thing in Tekken and it is absolutely getting me killed lol.

Artelier posted:Guess that means I'm not playing Jin, sorry main character. (I kid I'll try him out at some point) Possible correction: I've not tried this but thinking about it I suspect you cannot do a wavedash with the mist/wind step method; since those are triggered by steps and wavedashing is done with a dash cancel. Nice Van My Man posted:Seriously if EWGF was supposed to be hitting 2 1 frame after df I'd have it beat by now. Why is it always exactly one frame late? How is that possible? A couple of reasons that could be either or contributing together: Fighting games in general make you perform a motion _before_ pressing the button and you've likely internalized this; contributing to this is that the brain will focus on whichever hand starts a movement/is doing the most complex task, leading to micro delays in activating the other. Finally it is very likely that you are tensing up your hands as you are practicing, especially when it isn't going your way and you are getting frustrated. d+2~df is a pretty common trick indeed. If the issue persists you are likely doing the motion too fast for your fluidity/practice level and you should slow yourself down a bit so you can internalize better. Edit: also, look at your hands while practicing, this can help you focus on the coordination and internalization. Autsj fucked around with this message at 14:56 on Feb 9, 2024 |

None of that is tied to the actual animation of the move so it fucks up my brain when the second "kick" doesn't change if I press it too early or too late. Upcoming dlc leaked Lidia, fahk, marduk. Underwhelming, no one new and only one I like. Kinda approaching how I use heat with Feng differently the past Night. I usually rush down with a lot of pressure and spend the gauge quick but his B1 being juiced means you can get one or two 44 damage 10 frame punishes off then use the rage ender which is pretty nuts, so ive been fishing for punishes. Also if you hit someone with a heat engager following that up with a command grab is like 98% successful against lower rank players.

Yeah the Sajam video on this from last week is something that I try to keep in mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P8cvrZZLN8 "You want to play clean at the beginning? You can't." If you haven't shown them you can't beat whatever "cheap" thing they're doing why should they stop doing it, and at the same time that means you should keep doing things until they've shown you that you should stop. I am trying to cultivate mental resilience which I couldn't really do in 7 ranked at all, I basically ignore what the ranking points are and if I catch myself thinking about it I try to push it out, just play every match as it comes. If I lose in an overwhelming way then I make a note there's something to learn for the next time I see that matchup, and if I feel myself getting really tilted then it's time to eject and lab for an hour (which may not be fun for some people but I find it really relaxing lol)

Picked up this afternoon and doing a hell of a lot better than yesterday. Sleep and bitching are magic. Also on the df1 thing, if I apply that knowledge check on a player that's inclined towards tossing out all kinds of unsafe poo poo without once jabbing and they figure it out, I will actually without any irony congratulate them aloud.
