I'm going to drown! For no reason at all!

I think GaaS means like a dozen different things to different people and it's one of the reasons it's so hard to talk about a lot of those games rationally.

Free to play games are also gaas

But yeah the fundamental distinction that makes it a "service" is on the business end. if they're a service business and not a products business, they're expecting to maintain their customers and make a certain amount of recurring income from each one instead of one-time sales. (Or at least, a certain amount on average. Maybe most players buy nothing and some are mtx whales but when you add it all up you can say "we make $x per month per thousand players").
Which means the game will never stop bugging you to pay up in some way or other.

I'm sure half the reason manager brained people love GaaS isn't even the "it could be the next fortnite!" thing but just the fact that stable recurring revenue is so much nicer on the accounting side than selling products once for a flat fee.

quote:

Hoverkitty in the Hoververse Chapter Three is the third game in the Hoverkitty in the Hoververse series. The Hoververse series is about a robotic cat traveling around a planet called the Hoververse, protecting it and the creatures that live within the world from the clutches of malicious entities.

In this 3D game, you can explore the land, and soon you will find that there is something amiss, something that could upend the Hoververse. Things are not as they should be, and it is up to our unlikely, yet valiant hero and heroine to put things back in order and bring peace back to the Hoververse.

For the first time in the series, you can discover the mysterys of the Hoververse as either Hoverkitty or Hoverflea, which means you have multiple ways of completing a level. Hoverkitty is a robotic cat that can wield a sword for close combat, and Hoverflea is a robotic flea that shoots lasers for skirmishes that can be fought further away.

A quest that you will find in most levels is Treat collecting. Sometimes you must collect Treats to pass a level. Hoverkitty and Hoverflea can both collect Treats, but one advantage to playing as Hoverflea is that he is smaller than Hoverkitty, which means he can fit in smaller areas.

This has aspects of an adventure,3D, first-person shooter. You will meet old enemies, such as the Hoverkitty Hunters, and also new allies that can help you in the Battle for the Hoververse.

This game also has some lore to it, for all you Hoverkitty fans out there, so be on the look out for some new an old faces and facts.

I highly recommend checking out the dev's games if you are interested in odd, weird games with a lot of charm. They are not what would be considered good by the conventional sense of the word but they are good to me. They are enjoyable, memorable, short, and inexpensive. Most of all, they are honest. There is no cynical trendchasing here, just 1 person doing all the art, the music, the writing, the voice acting, the animating, and the world is a better place with amateur developers like this contributing their work regardless of how others may perceive it. I'm going to copy my steam review to here.

quote:

Alright, so right out the gate I just want to make this clear. I greatly enjoy this developer's work and I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable experience. That being said, there are a lot of flaws with this game, some even gamebreaking, but I would still recommend this despite those flaws. I will list the problems I ran into below, in no particular order.

- Levels generally have an end goal of collecting a set amount of treats or defeating a bunch of enemies. However, several levels were able to be partially skipped because the end level trigger still existed before I finished the objectives. This would skip me ahead to the next level.
- Both Hoverkitty and Hoverflea rotate at the same time regardless of who you are controlling, making it difficult to use their powers in tandem to defeat the enemies.
- Several game over screens had a large pink box obscuring the game.
- Switching between Hoverkitty and Hoverflea sometimes leaves you stuck in place, having to press their respective swap button again to get control of them. Additionally, sometimes the controlled character changes but the camera doesn't.
- The controls for keyboard are awkward. Every level requires that you press B to get rid of the text displaying your controls. Movement is WASD but turning requires pressing R to turn left and L to turn right (Yes, R for left & L for right), and Hoverflea's beam is fired with P.
- The game at one point froze up and crashed at the same point repeatedly. There's a cutscene and level load that for some reason locked the game up. I was able to play through on a better computer (my computer is not good at all) and while the game progressed as normal, the other computer was getting uncomfortably hot while running the game.
- There is a level trigger near the end of the game that puts you into a cutscene from the game's midpoint, effectively sequence breaking backwards.

I need you to understand that these are undeniable flaws and problems, things that are definitely not good. With all that said, however, I still really enjoyed this game. Why? Because this is one of many games made by a passionate developer who does all of the art, all of the music, all of the voice acting, all of the writing, everything on her own. This isn't a cynical cash grab or something like that, this is a work of art and I mean that sincerely. The developer has, through the medium of video game development, created memorable pieces of art that astound and inspire me. It would be great if the major glitches were fixed and it would be great for the controls to be rebindable, but the product she has made that exists here on this page is still a fantastic piece in a series of pieces that show what someone is capable of doing if they have the willpower and drive to complete a project. Countless times I myself have tried to start projects, only for them to fizzle out when I hit a brick wall. When I see stuff like Hoverkitty In The Hoververse, I feel inspired to keep trying. Finishing and delivering a work that isn't just chasing some current trend, all while continuing to grow as an artist, writer, and (especially with this new game) musician, it all just gives me hope that I can maybe do something some day.

People may look at this and thing I'm being ironic, or that I am insincere. I have no means of proving the sincerity of this review. I can only hope that those who read this will take it at face value that I enjoyed this game and I hope others will check out this developer's games and experience the enjoyment I felt.

This article really makes me think very well of Hideo

https://www.gematsu.com/2024/02/hideo-kojima-on-decision-to-develop-physint-i-realized-that-people-die

Hideo Kojima posted:

“I fell ill in 2020,” Kojima explained. “It was also during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during all of it. I even had surgery. And I thought, ‘I can’t anymore.’ I was at my lowest and felt like I couldn’t go back to making games. I wrote a will, too. And in that moment, I realized that people die. But, I turned 60 last year. I’ll turn 70 in ten years. I hope to never retire. Having said that, if the users desire it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit. I still want to do new things, but I decided to make an action espionage game. I get many requests from Hollywood to make films, but I’ve refused them. Because I have my own company now, I can’t leave for one or two years to go make a movie. The company would collapse. I was in a tough spot. And I talked to Guillermo del Toro about it. And he said, ‘Hideo, what you’re making is already a movie. Keep going as you are.’ His words saved me. And since we’ll be working with many creators in the business, though the output is a game, it won’t be too different from movies.”

Battlepass the worst f2p development to me. All the usual daily login poo poo + the "selling gift cards and then reclaiming the 6 dollars left on a half dozen 5 year old Xmas gift cards" trick.

Because of their nature and dependence on using free players and playtime as a resource, I already view f2p games as weird labour I'm paid for with limited access to the worst version of gameplay that game has, so the idea of paying them to give me new chores is exhausting. I would always rather just pay one flat price for a game and get all the stuff, I never want to gamble for junk, or have a carrot dangled in front of me. I want to play a game when I feel like it and never attempted to be made feel like I'm "missing" something by not playing.

Jeez, for some reason I thought he was like 10 years younger but he's been making games since before I was born so idk why. Thank you Del Toro for setting him back on the path of light. Hollywood would be a waste of time, we already get better movies from Kojima with controllers in our hands, why would I just wanna watch some static movie. What if I want to zoom in on something or restart a section because I killed someone by accident?
