I think GaaS means like a dozen different things to different people and it's one of the reasons it's so hard to talk about a lot of those games rationally.

Free to play games are also gaas But yeah the fundamental distinction that makes it a "service" is on the business end. if they're a service business and not a products business, they're expecting to maintain their customers and make a certain amount of recurring income from each one instead of one-time sales. (Or at least, a certain amount on average. Maybe most players buy nothing and some are mtx whales but when you add it all up you can say "we make $x per month per thousand players"). Which means the game will never stop bugging you to pay up in some way or other. I'm sure half the reason manager brained people love GaaS isn't even the "it could be the next fortnite!" thing but just the fact that stable recurring revenue is so much nicer on the accounting side than selling products once for a flat fee. Hoverkitty In The Hoververse Chapter 3 has been released. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2768760/Hoverkitty_In_The_Hoververse_Chapter_Three/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/2768760/Hoverkitty_In_The_Hoververse_Chapter_Three/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/2768760/Hoverkitty_In_The_Hoververse_Chapter_Three/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/2768760/Hoverkitty_In_The_Hoververse_Chapter_Three/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/2768760/Hoverkitty_In_The_Hoververse_Chapter_Three/ quote:Hoverkitty in the Hoververse Chapter Three is the third game in the Hoverkitty in the Hoververse series. The Hoververse series is about a robotic cat traveling around a planet called the Hoververse, protecting it and the creatures that live within the world from the clutches of malicious entities. I highly recommend checking out the dev's games if you are interested in odd, weird games with a lot of charm. They are not what would be considered good by the conventional sense of the word but they are good to me. They are enjoyable, memorable, short, and inexpensive. Most of all, they are honest. There is no cynical trendchasing here, just 1 person doing all the art, the music, the writing, the voice acting, the animating, and the world is a better place with amateur developers like this contributing their work regardless of how others may perceive it. I'm going to copy my steam review to here. quote:Alright, so right out the gate I just want to make this clear. I greatly enjoy this developer's work and I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable experience. That being said, there are a lot of flaws with this game, some even gamebreaking, but I would still recommend this despite those flaws. I will list the problems I ran into below, in no particular order. Here are links to her other games, not counting Hoverkitty 3. The Bubbleboy Project https://store.steampowered.com/app/2328360/The_Bubbleboy_Project/ quote:Welcome to The Bubbleboy Project. In the first game, you will play as a wobbly boy made of bubbles, in a 3D side-scrolling world that has sharp objects at every turn. The second part will be a bit more mysetrious as you traverse as yourself our 3D forest and building that are open world. Good Luck! Kati The Astronaut https://store.steampowered.com/app/2099180/Kati_The_Astronaut/ quote:Help Kati the Astronaut traverse the depth of space and defeat enemies to save the universes! Hoverkitty: Hoververse https://store.steampowered.com/app/1928290/Hoverkitty_Hoververse/ quote:Help Hoverkitty rescue her friend Hoverflea in the Hoververse! Your life will forever be changed. Hoverkitty In The Hoververse Chapter Two https://store.steampowered.com/app/2472970/Hoverkitty_In_The_Hoververse_Chapter_Two/ quote:Hoverkitty is back, and she needs help. Help Hoverkitty as she goes on a epic adventure, where the choices she makes lead her on a journey that could save, or destroy, the Hoververse.

What I don't like are online only games with battle passes, because the entire game is balanced and centered around the battle pass.

This article really makes me think very well of Hideo https://www.gematsu.com/2024/02/hideo-kojima-on-decision-to-develop-physint-i-realized-that-people-die Hideo Kojima posted:“I fell ill in 2020,” Kojima explained. “It was also during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during all of it. I even had surgery. And I thought, ‘I can’t anymore.’ I was at my lowest and felt like I couldn’t go back to making games. I wrote a will, too. And in that moment, I realized that people die. But, I turned 60 last year. I’ll turn 70 in ten years. I hope to never retire. Having said that, if the users desire it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit. I still want to do new things, but I decided to make an action espionage game. I get many requests from Hollywood to make films, but I’ve refused them. Because I have my own company now, I can’t leave for one or two years to go make a movie. The company would collapse. I was in a tough spot. And I talked to Guillermo del Toro about it. And he said, ‘Hideo, what you’re making is already a movie. Keep going as you are.’ His words saved me. And since we’ll be working with many creators in the business, though the output is a game, it won’t be too different from movies.”

Battlepass the worst f2p development to me. All the usual daily login poo poo + the "selling gift cards and then reclaiming the 6 dollars left on a half dozen 5 year old Xmas gift cards" trick. Because of their nature and dependence on using free players and playtime as a resource, I already view f2p games as weird labour I'm paid for with limited access to the worst version of gameplay that game has, so the idea of paying them to give me new chores is exhausting. I would always rather just pay one flat price for a game and get all the stuff, I never want to gamble for junk, or have a carrot dangled in front of me. I want to play a game when I feel like it and never attempted to be made feel like I'm "missing" something by not playing.

Thank you Del Toro for setting him back on the path of light. Hollywood would be a waste of time, we already get better movies from Kojima with controllers in our hands, why would I just wanna watch some static movie. What if I want to zoom in on something or restart a section because I killed someone by accident?

I think Kojima is a genius but in an accidental way, where any reveal/emotional beat/piece of dialogue that doesn't land is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

I got a weird itch for Mech games last night but I didn't play one, I just watched a 2 hour playthrough of Mech Warrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy. That game was much longer as a kid. They weren't even speedrunning and took time to read the briefings and lore stuff between missions.

It's basically the game I'd wished 2 was back in '97 or '98 or whenever that was.

A new video in my favourite genre - retrospectives on older games I have never played and will never play - just came out as this sinus infection of mine hit a fever pitch and man I didn't realize how much of a balm hearing someone wax on about the history and mechanics of Ultima 3 would be for my wracked body. Edit: oh right it's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_m3u9MZ8NU
