I mean he kinda does! Ruling the planet is just the way he gets to maintain his only real emotional defense against being an unloved test tube baby, that he's a Super Special Boy. But his entire deranged quest is definitely aimed at both Showing That Little poo poo Who Stabbed Me in the Back I'm Not Owned, and making sure Shinra Finds Out for all the loving Around. He just thinks Shinra is the ultimate expression of human mendacity.

Hell it's not even clear Meteor would actually wipe out humanity, just industrial civilization. Granted, that's still genocide and a horror beyond compare, but it's not unreasonable to conclude Sephiroth thinks he's genuinely protecting the planet and also once and for all being the Specialist Boy.

Like Sephiroth wasn't always evil or anything, but he was always kind of estranged/detached from most other people (and what connection he felt with people like Angeal/Genesis was largely related to them also being "different" like himself). While there was definitely a lot of Jenova manipulation going on in the later events in Nibelheim, it was still built off of an existing feeling of estrangement from "normal people."

I feel like this makes more sense than "guy who is normal (but just kind of awkward/shy) and cares about other people normally" just suddenly going full murder mode after learning he's the product of an experiment. Instead existing feelings of estrangement/detachment were transformed into something darker.

I don't disagree that Sephiroth was detached, but I think it's more poor socialization than anything else. He does seem to care about other people, he's just really kind of weird and bad at showing it.

I like The Thing pretending to be a war hero a lot better than Smirking Unkillable Anime Prettyboy #3223676 with yet another superpower. It's such an interesting inversion of the trope it helped popularize, but alas EU stuff ruined everything by misinterpreting Sephiroth as a main character, and that appears to have carried over to the remakes. The original reveal that he's been dead the entire time and the "Sephiroth" we're seeing walk around is just a shapeshifting meat monster is really cool.

Spoilered because I can't be assed to look up the thread's policy on spoiling a 30 year old game.

I took it as ]Sephiroth actually took over Jenova and was controlling it. The shapeshifting meat monster is just following Sephiroth's will.

I got the impression the Sephiroth from both most of FF7 and Advent Children was basically "Jenova, but Sephiroth has such a powerful ego that he took the reins (but was still heavily influenced by Jenova)." So in a sense a mix of the two beings.

And I think the Remake games might be leaning into this with the "watashi vs ore Sephiroth" stuff, which implies that the events of Remake somehow freed Sephiroth from Jenova's influence (or at least directly implies some fundamental difference between "the Sephiroth who talks with Cloud at the very end" and "the Sephiroths seen earlier in the game").

FFVIIRebirth demo is weird because replaying one of my favorite parts of one of my favorite games of all time is literally breathtaking but then there's stuff like the part where you kind of have to awkwardly move a mako vacuum into place to proceed that are so obviously padding that I can't help but think "I can probably wait a couple months until I finally finish LADIW to play this" like I just know there's gonna be an overly complicated chocobo ranch minigame that's going to piss me off just like it did in the original 20+ years ago

You could breed starting pretty early on, you just couldn�t catch the right kinds of chocobos to make the special colors until later in the game. I think you need a Black Chocobo and an Excellent regular one to make a Gold one but you can�t get the Excellent ones until you get to Mideel.

Playing through the Yuffie DLC and I just remembered that they do not have Sonon playable, but they also have ability requirements such as "Land a finishing blow" for him.
