Homestuck is a true work of art surpassing all of Shakespeare's works.
I was honestly thankful and surprised we weren't treated to a homage of a later shot from DM:CB when I had the exact same feeling.

I'm really not enjoying this (in the good way) and want Denji to be okay :(

So here's my hope: I wasn't huge on Fire Punch because it went full bleak, no levity. Look Back, Goodbye Eri, and CSM have all done a much better job of balancing bleakness with levity. I deeply, deeply hope that this signifies an overall trend for Fujimoto because making Denji go full villain after all he's been through would just sap any joy out of this story.

Denji at least needs a hopeful ending, a la part 1. He's been through way too much to not have it. When you go full dark, no stars it just becomes misery porn and CSM is so much better than that.

Asa, please help him. ):

What a chapter. I genuinely think Fujimoto is the best in the business right now.

I didn’t expect this arc to go with Denji abandoning Nayuta to be killed by a mob so that Denji continues to be trapped within cycles of guilt, but it looks like that’s where we’re going. My guess is Denji is in a massive depression but runs into Kobeni (who is now either confident and believes in herself or is even more of a mess) who tells him to just go down to hell to get back Nayuta (and Power). But before that it looks like we finally get more Denji backstory!

IIRC didn’t Nayuta control-jack someone to carry an injured Denji away? He didn’t really abandon her. He did pick a fight when she was saying they should run away, but who’s to say things would’ve gone better if he hadn’t started swinging.

Asa is also currently plotting to quite literally rip out his heart "for his own good".

Reze or Kobeni or something seems a more reasonable option.

this more than anything says she's gonna die here, the heroic sacrifice of the otherwise monstrous demon showing humanity and love

This is probably just copium, but Is there a chance Yoru might end up saving Nayuta? I know Fami’s asked for her cooperation before (and got shot down), but I’m not sure if there’s any connection between War and Control that might come into play if they met.

at this point i feel certain we will be opening an upcoming chapter with either that homage or a clear confirmation she's okay and it doesn't feel like there's a lot of middle ground

maybe if kishibe was already around to rescue the pets he can save the day

It has, which is the good news here. Makima, Kobeni, Madoka, Power, Aki, Reze, and Quanxi all ended chapters in positions like this or worse and still showed up later... which was, admittedly, not always for the best.

Fujimoto tends to show it when there's a death, and Nayuta just getting offscreened would be a bit unusual.

That said, even if she's going to make it, I think we'll be left uncertain for a while. Denji's life has been getting worse and worse, and I doubt he's getting an out soon. Nayuta is someone who loves Denji unconditionally, and who shows he's done something really good with his life. Her showing up alive and well again, if it happens, is where Denji gets back up and going.

Glad to see that I wasn't the only one thinking about Devilman during this chapter, man this was a rough one. And it still can get worse :smith:

i think it's increasingly likely that kobeni's devil is just unrelated or something we haven't seen yet. aki and kishibe and yoshida all show superhuman speed and agility in ways that aren't particularly tied or linked in the text to their known devils (even before future devil aki is anime-style strong and fast), and it's funnier if her wild swings in effectiveness are just how she is as a person and the devil is some other thing that isn't her impressive reflexes and agility.

ImpAtom

Honestly my bet is that she never actually had a devil contract, she was just so insanely talented that she got hired without one and it is a secret because the answer is she doesn't got poo poo.

My theory was always that Kobeni is contracted with the death Devil. In exchange for her entire family’s sanity she defies death, and is super good at killing. Or something, idk.

Kobeni actually used to be the coolest most calm person but had to give that up for her contract.

You don't need a contract to get hired. Agents just make contracts with Devils so they can fight better.

A silly little mouse!
You know how do people go about making all these contracts with devils anyway? They can’t all be locked up in a cell waiting for you like Future devil. And they’re usually too busy killing everyone in sight to stop and make contracts with random passerby. How exactly do you actually get in contact with the fox devil or the stone devil or the snake devil etc?

Ranzear
Jul 25, 2013

I think Makima says not all devils are hostile to humans, and Kon in particular is implied to only like cute boys, ruling out Kobeni.

Fox works for the Bureau, along with a lot of other devils. They can play ball and get blood and fear delivery instead of having to hunt for it, or they can refuse and maybe die. Sometimes it's a good looking offer.

In the wild, it's often something given through force. That is, the Devil wants something it can't normally get and forces the human into a contract to get it (like with a lot of Makima's contracts) or the human has the upper hand and the devil cooperates to survive (like with Typhoon and Reze), or both parties have something the other wants (like with Eternity). Plenty of reasons for it, if circumstances are right.

It’d be really funny if she had a contract with the secret devil and she literally told us her contract very early. That would be an extremely Fujimoto move
