He went down with TJS like two weeks after the trade. That said Wesneski was so bad last year that he put up less WAR in 89 IP (0.3) than 2022 Effross put up for just the Yankees in 12 IP (0.4).

Very curious to see what they do with Wesneski this year. The FO keeps banging the drum that they believe he has the tools to be a starter long term, but the rotation is full up and Horton is (hopefully) primed in the pump to make his MLB debut this year. Obviously injuries will happen and he'll get his shot, but it feels like there's an equal chance of him making the opening day roster as a long man out of the pen or getting sent to AAA to stay stretched out as SP depth.

Are there any other owners who had Mike Illitch's "gently caress it, it's only money" approach in his later years?

The Royals made a push after the 1989 season when it was clear Ewing Kauffman wasn't going to make it much longer - that's the offseason when they signed Storm Davis and Mark Davis (giving them both previous years Cy Young winners) and briefly had the highest payroll in baseball.

It did not work out.

Has there ever been a year where so many good free agents were available when Spring Training started? Usually there are a couple but this year seems higher than normal. Sort of feel like the markets not going to get better for those players the closer it gets to opening day.

Cubs seem to have a lot of good arms in that 24-26 age range. My guess is they just throw them all against a wall and see what sticks. For Hayden, I'm guessing he starts in AAA.

Same, but it makes sense from Boras' perspective. Snell's (probably) gonna make more than Montgomery and Boras would rather have a higher contract value as a point of comparison for what he wants to get Montgomery vs having a lower contract teams can point to and say "well hey Monty got that and he's not *that* much worse than Snell."

It wasn't that long ago when Harper and Machado made unsigned into ST

I don't think you can draw too much into this year other than its Boras being Boras.

Yeah all creating a signing window would do is incentivize owners to run FA's down to the last possible second and then offer take it or leave it deals significantly lower than they'd get if they had longer to sweat teams out. Boras isn't holding players out forever because he thinks it's fun: he's doing it because it's an effective strategy to get teams to blink and at least get closer to a player's market value.
