Gonna go check out NPR's and Pitchfork's list next. Anyone have a particularly good list to share?

Canadian funk lords Chromeo have a new album out today. While not my favorite of theirs, it's alright. But it is notable for having a song with La Roux on it in 2024, which is my favorite song on the whole album.

Great! You're welcome. I'm a big fan of Dan Campbell's voice, but out of various projects (The Wonder Years, solo stuff), I think I like Aaron West the most.

For his solo stuff, he's got a great Taylor Swift cover:

It's great. Just make sure you stand either by the balcony railings, or if you're on the first floor, stand towards the back by the sound engineer. I've found that if you try and stand closer to the stage, the sound isn't as good.

They have a few sister venues in the area. The Anthem opened maybe 7 years ago, and it has a much larger capacity, and has much better acoustics, but it's kind of a pain to get to at The Wharf. They just opened The Atlantis right next door to 9:30, which is a recreation of the original location for the 9:30 Club. Then out in the suburbs they have Merriweather Post Pavilion, an amphitheater and namesake for the Animal Collective album.

e: just finished it. Kenny Beats fingerprints are all over it, and it leans heavily towards the more experimental/stripped back parts of 'Crawler' than going back to 'Brutalism' or 'Joy'. Also, the guitars when they are there sound much beefier than on 'Crawler', so there's that

So Quadeca released Scrapyard, and it's extremely good. Lots of range, great composition, great song writing. Seriously his lyricism is great. It's interesting to hear how cohesive of a sound the album has while still being composed of songs that didn't make his previous album and won't be on his next album.

Highlights include:

False. There is only one electron and it has never stopped
I don't get it. Wilco's song 'Black Moon' off The Whole Love has no business hitting as hard as it does.

The lyrics are basic plaintive longing bordering on melodrama. The riff come close to being repetitive. The effects are almost too in your face.

But the key words are bordering, close, and almost. It's more than the some of its parts so sure.

Bandcamp is a gem of a website/service. Especially with things like game and indie movie soundtracks, and albums by bands that have exclusive streaming contracts that you don't have a subscription to or that for some reason some of their albums were taken down by whomever.

If it’s even half as good as the Soft Bulletin 20th anniversary tour it will still be amazing.

My first Flaming Lips experience was when they played the Big Day Out in 2004. I'd never listened to them before but I’d heard their show was fun. The stage was full of dancing animals, there was confetti and streamers, it was so joyous and colourful and amazing. I went out and bought the Yoshimi album the next day.
