More of a serious post, I've been lurking this thread since about 2010 myself, when I was a wee egg about to go to uni being taken for a fool by the lib dems. That still stings tbh. But thanks to this thread I've become more knowledgeable about politics, more commie than ever before, it is in part one of the places that exposed me to trans people and in turn helped to crack my egg and understand myself more. Also I met my fiancé through here and he is amazing so when I think about it, ukmt has been a hugely impactful force on me

I mostly lurk ever since I made a very sensible centrist post about the scourge of chavs many years ago under an old username that I rightly got hammered for, long before Dave introduced the concept of hugging a hoodie.

Younger me had been indoctrinated in all kinds of shite, like believing the Telegraph to be the definitive source of news and my early experiences of the internet led me down some thought processes that now seem utterly unthinkable.

Lurking in this thread and being on SA in general has probably helped me reshape my views and ability to consume media critically.

I'm kinda sceptical of my work solution too, to be honest. I work for a big corporation but their admin processes are a shambles. Like, the HR platform and HR itself have been outsourced to departments out in Europe/India and as a result, there's no actual HR person in any of the UK offices to speak to about issues with the system or situations like the one we're talking about.

My personal contact details/next of kin, etc are all in my section of the HR system, but the only person who can supposedly get access to that is my line manager. Except, he can't because he needs a setting changed by his line manager who's out on maternity leave. However, she wasn't able to transfer that specific level of operational control to another person because it's not a feature of the system.

As a result, a colleague of mine got in touch with me on WhatsApp last week for a work thing (i'm out on pat leave at the minute), but only after he went to my current line manager to get my number from my previous line manager. She only has it because of a WhatsApp group my old team were on for a temporary Christmas work thing a year or so back.

It feels like i'm going to be asking my manager for a favour of "Please make getting in touch with me or my family a priority if I don't show up to work in case my children die", which feels like a big burden to put on someone rather than it being a default company process.

The kids will each be in nursery 4 days a week from August so if they don't show up i'd hope someone from the nursery would try and pop round to the house as we're just 10 minutes up the road, but i don't know how doggedly they'd try to make sure the kids are ok.

Something bad is unlikely to happen to both of us simultaneously, but i guess it's one of those things that aren't foolproof unless you've got relatives or neighbours popping round every day.

We've got a policy for when we make those kind of phone calls, but still have to do it every couple of months. Usually because someone's changed their plan for the day and not told a manager.
The most anxious I've been with it was someone who'd been off sick a couple of days (having told me they likely would be) and then wasn't answering their phone the next day. Were they dead at home? Did they even live with anyone who might know?
No. They were fine (apparently it's cool to use WhatsApp's "last seen" comment to assume someone's still alive), so I gave them a bollocking for not keeping the relevant people informed of their change of plans.

I agree also with the earlier post that it's hard to be able to talk to anyone about it. People think it's daft if you've never actually met someone. I dunno. I think Twisto and Camrath both affected me more than most other deaths I've gone through. Just seemed wronger somehow.

Sounds like the M&S katsu curry ones. I have no idea why they put coconut in it, can't say I've ever noticed it in katsu curry. The crisps were good though.

Generally speaking have lurked the ukmt on and off for years now from a distance having left the UK over a decade ago now but I only found out about Camrath a couple of days ago when someone made a passing reference and I was thinking to buy some of his fudge to send to a family member back there as a present. It's not quite the same, but earlier this year I found out that my first brief girlfriend at uni died 3 years ago.

We only dated on and off for a few months (several years apart), and hadn't spoken in over a decade but it was still creating a bit of a weird feeling of disbelief and loss for a whole bunch of reasons.

It's also a situation that there isn't really anyone to talk about it to. Our social circles have long since stopped overlapping, she died so long ago, and we were together for such little time that it would weird to go and bring it up with anyone we mutually knew.

It's maybe a bit similar to here. I can't imagine there's many folk 30+ offline who would understand the feeling off loss when someone from the UKMT dies.
