I haven't played this yet, but a search of itch.io failed to turn up an alternative download for Ur-Quan Masters, but it did turn this up: https://szcz.itch.io/hunt-of-the-kohr-ah (Warning: this game has spoilers for UQM.) My first playthrough of UQM ended in the Kohr-Ah absorbing their brother race and moving throughout the galaxy exterminating all the other races, one by one. I could see this as an obvious fail state, and I figured I'd lost the game. But, I had been playing for so long that I roleplayed my own ending, gathering at least one ship of each race into my fleet, staffing my main ship with as many people as possible, and attempting to follow the Arilou into one of their alternate universe warp zones. Basically, I created an ark. The game ended anyway, of course, with the failure message being delivered by the victors, and that was that. However, the above freeware game (which I haven't yet played, but I'm kinda intrigued that it exists) would essentially let me live out my roleplayed ending for UQM. I think that's pretty neat.

That time limit in SC2 was the worst. It was never really clear to me that it was there and seems impossible to overcome without a guide. You can’t really spend any time exploring from what I remember. Though I mostly played on 3DO in the 90’s. I did download UQM years after that and finally get the good ending with a guide. I guess it was meant to take multiple play throughs to figure it all out but I wasn’t that smart.

The time limit isn't overly harsh for completing the game (though far from impossible to blunder into on a blind playthrough), it's just that there are some events that can happen relatively early that remove some helpful resources (and it obviously doesn't feel as much like a golden ending if you miss out). You can totally still beat the final boss after most of the rest of the quadrant is wiped out (in fact, you can even circumvent a few quests that way).

I guess it was meant to take multiple play throughs to figure it all out but I wasn’t that smart. This sounds like the complete opposite to my experience, I've played through the entire game about four times and never hit the time limit. My last playthrough was years ago but I didn't even need to read a guide that time, it was enough to go to the aliens that sell information, they will basically tell you how to beat the whole game as long as you have enough resources to pay them. So I did lots of exploring for resources, lots of buying of useful hints from the aliens, and all the quests, and it was fine (All on PC if that matters, never played 3DO)

Yeah probably my memory is faulty it’s been too long. I’m probably just remembering one or two races that were hard to get to in time if you didn’t know about them already. It must have been the perfect run where I needed a guide and it felt like I never would have figured that out on my own. But I was never the type to keep track of things in a notebook or whatever so I’d forget the clues. Anyway it’s a good game and I remember enjoying it even though it could be difficult. Talking about it I want to play again now.

I guess it was meant to take multiple play throughs to figure it all out but I wasn’t that smart. I beat it in my second play, and I found it pretty meaningful, given my first failure. Playthrough 2 was way more focused than playthrough 1, and I think of it as a full experience of the game. I'm not going to sit up here and judge anyone for modding out the time limit or using a walkthrough or whatever, but I personally appreciated it. I'm ambivalent about things like that in general, though. You know how in fantasy and sci-fi, when someone comes across an immortal person, or immortality in general, and there's always this philosophical thing about how for us poor mortals, death gives our lives so much meaning? Absolute bullshit, immortality is objectively better than dying. But in Star Control II, hitting the bad ending unawares did something for me and made me very determined to beat the thing. I can't say I would feel that way about a lesser game.
