Israel's government to vote on decision to reject unilateral international recognition of a Palestinian state

At Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's behest, Israel's government is expected to vote on a resolution to reject any unilateral international recognition of a Palestinian state. Minister Benny Gantz is expected to attend for the first time in a month.

The proposed wording of the resolution reads, "Israel outright rejects international dictates regarding a permanent settlement with the Palestinians. Such a settlement will only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties, without preconditions. Israel will continue to oppose the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, Such recognition, following the massacre of October 7, will give a huge reward to terrorism, a reward like no other, and will prevent any future peace agreement."

what the gently caress does "unilateral international" mean. those terms mean opposite things. what the gently caress.

Sorry to ask this, but a while ago, during the start of this event, when Yemen was announcing marching forces to Israel, there was this spokesperson with a gun that talked a lot about keeping a promise that was posted a bunch here. Who was it. It wasn't Yayha Saree. I specifically remember a bigger five o clock shadow and being slightly greyed out.

Ansar Allah seems to have three primary spokesmen: Yaya Sahree for the military, Mohammed Abdulsalam for the political wing of Ansar Allah, and Abdul-Malik Badruldeen al-Houthi as leader of the Zaydi revivalist movement we all call "Houthis."

I think Abdulsalam is the guy you're thinking of.

It's so weird how you never hear about Yemen, Somalia and Ethiopia having socialist states - only the mysterious famines, civil war and chaos after 1991. You know, that part of the world is just like that.

e: I was listening to an interview for the 30th anniversary of Gothic Serpent, and one of the Delta Force guys just casually says that life has no meaning over there because people would try to walk to the market or well while US troops were shooting at Somali militias. He and the interviewer went back and forth on how third world countries are just that way.

What's the distribution of Israel's power grid like? Because I'm looking at a report saying that the outage is affecting "Safed, Bnei Brak, Petah Tikva, and Beersheba."
https://en.royanews.tv/news/49416/2024-02-18

You wouldn't think Beersheba or Safed would be hooked up to Petah Tikva, but I guess the distances in Israel don't matter.

The Hebrew article claims that the issue caused "load sheddings" which then resulted in the power outages across the country. I guess they mean the load from that station was redistributed to other ones all over the place? How does that work, I'm no electrician

Yes that's basically what it means. The plant at Petah Tikvah would've had to be overloaded with energy for its own grid to shed off, which means it probably is a technical issue. Technically, a cyber attack is also a "technical issue."

Load shedding is a fancy way to refer to turning electricity off for certain areas to reduce load.

if Israel takes the initiative and invades Lebanon im not so sure we have the juice to do an intervention. not that Biden wouldn’t want to, but the navy has been deployed in the Mediterranean for four months doing nothing while racking up maintenance issues, and meanwhile the US military has bigger problems to deal with in Iraq & Syria.

e: just for example; when the US responded to the killing of those 3 soldiers at Tower 22, we bombed 82 targets in Iraq and Syria with B-1s that had to fly out of the United States. That's the kind of strategic commitment that's necessary if the US intervened on Israel's behalf in Lebanon, and we'd be doing it to a sovereign state with guarantees from the US government and not militias.
