Then the book ends with a story of some attempted cocaine smuggling, where everyone in a slum dwelling works together to keep some jars of Austrian coke away from the French police who is there looking for it. It sounds like something from a farce, and I think Orwell wasn't there and admits that this is just what he heard. The cops finds the jars, but the guy who was about to smuggle it avoids jail since he had already been duped into buying face powder instead of coke.
