Just once I would like to open this thread and see an article about how the USN ripped a dozen VL cells out of an Ohio SSGN, welded them to trucks and the GOP are losing their minds because a fleet of C-5s full of Tomahawks are flying to Poland.

What pisses me off the most about letting Ukraine down with vehicles, weapons and ammo is how loving good they are at this. Like they are making Russia hurt like they haven't been for over half a century, and all with leftover poo poo. It is insane value for defence dollars. Europe needs to arm the gently caress up anyway because Putin's ambitions won't stop in Ukraine. And for that we need factories and actual ability to produce. Juice that the gently caress up and send the first batches of everything to Ukraine, how hard can this be? Useless goddamned politicians.

Well Europe needs to arm up anyway because Trump is a cert to get in and do everything he can to line his own nest with Putin. I think everything happening right now is just trying to make sure the US can't be forced to pull out of efforts when he gets in again. Its a genuine feeling that the US could flip in 2025 regardless of the public, you're already seeing the media change and bizarre pro putin stump speeches. The lovely thing is that noises in europe to that effect have taken the form of "give less to ukraine, we'll need it soon".

Problem is neoliberalism as always: * Capital seems incredibly reluctant to invest in ramping up munitions production as that would involve actually investing in production and manufacturing, rather than profiting through deregulation or shuffling money around various non-value adding financial instruments that leech money from other sectors/people. * So they won't do it unless they receive impossibly huge guarantees of long-term future munitions orders for many, many years to come. Never mind that shell stocks across the world are being depleted so there is clearly money to be made not just supplying Ukraine and the US, but others too. They are holding out for even more, and to reduce any risk to them to literally zero. * And governments are unwilling to direct companies to do it (or set up state run facilities) as the free market is always 110% more efficient in every single circumstance and anything else is unthinkable heresy. * So as usual nothing meaningful gets done, whilst everyone tries to shuffle the blame around to other parties. The fact Ukraine gets pounded is sad, but someone else's fault. Its the equivalent of pre-WW2 US investors turning their nose up at the proposal for the Detroit Tank Arsenal unless they were guaranteed 50,000 new tank orders a year to 1960, or the Brits refusing to liaise with industry to set up their Shadow Factories as that would be interfering in the free market. EDIT: Problem in Europe is also exacerbated by fragmented defense industries/spending, plus fact that France in particular (to be fair they are not the only one, but arguably the most determined - see the wiki entry for almost any joint military procurement involving French companies) treats gaining themselves an oversized share of the work/production as more important than the finished product/numbers. new article on Gazprom and its decreasing gas salesquote:“Gazprom understands that it will never again have as big and fat a slice of the pie as Europe, and it simply has to accept that,” said Marcel Salikhov, head of the Institute for Energy and Finance, a Russian think tank. “The only way forward now is to look for relatively smaller sources of revenue and gradually develop them, gathering crumbs.”

Oh yeah Trump can absolutely win. The hard MAGA core see his crimes as evidence that the deep state is against him and he needs their support, the broader GOP are convinced that Biden is so senile he barely remembers his own name, and there's some movement among latino voters who like his general culture war bullshit, plus the "omg they're invading at the border and the democrats are inviting them" panic and Biden's generally low approval ratings. That doesn't mean he will win, all the reasons he's a horrible candidate and should have practical and money problems are entirely true. But I'm not going to completely rule it out until the results are in.

Sure, we have to wait for the results to come in. In the meantime, Trump is pissing off judges and threatening their court clerks, still slandering E Jean Carroll despite not one but TWO judgements against him (and neither were criminal cases) and he's doing everything he possibly can to solidify the justice system against him. The man is going to gently caress himself completely, and there isn't a legal team that can bail his stupid loving mouth out.

All these things were also true back in 2020, without the insurrection and legal problems. I still think its a possibility and a concern (hence many of the discussions taking place in Europe), so I'm with you on not ruling it out.

Even beyond him, its been a bit of a given for years that NATO isn't strategically as important to direct threats like china/iran to the states so even in the obama era while no public noises were made, it was known that the BFF status would wane eventually. Its just that Trump is literally the only dude that would leave nato and ukraine with their dicks in their hands in the middle of an effort mostly sabre rattled by the UK in the west. Any other candidate would at least have a team around them smacking that poo poo out of their hands. Even the nato childlock that congress had to push through to stop him unilaterally deciding to pull out of nato means nothing. He would still just refuse to send any support in. Its terrifying that millions of lives in ukraine depend on how much people at the other side of the world like that guy from The Apprentice.

I agree with you 100%, it's the basis for so much hatred right here in the US against the entire GOP- they're criminals, in lockstep with their frontrunner criminal. The political races that are being held throughout the US though are very bad news for Republicans, Americans are disgusted and appalled by their tactics. Reversing Roe v Wade, and then leaning into it like it was a good idea, is just one piece of the puzzle as to why they have so woefully hosed themselves sideways spinning, into the ground. It's estimated that this year, in 2024, 41 million new American voters will be able to flex their muscles. If only half that number registers to vote, that's 20 million new voters. If half of THOSE voters are Democrat, that's 10 million votes against the guy that barely squeezed by in 2020. And that doesn't factor in disillusioned voters that Republicans have convinced that it's not worth the effort to even bother voting. This is Republicans I'm talking about. The convinced their own base that the vote is rigged, despite the many lawsuits they've lost that confirm one thing- election integrity in the US is solid.

Ummmm... if half those voters are Democrat, that's also half that aren't, and most of the rest probably go to Trump. Special elections have been promising enough that I don't think it's in the bag for Trump but 2020 margins were very thin to begin with.

Ammo needs to be made to very high specs for a 20 year safe shelflife at 3000 Euros a shot, the usual fate for the ammo produced since the Cold War ended. With practice and the occasional peacekeeping mission you'd fire a few dozen shells per year per gun at most. Steel, fuses, explosives, casings and primers all have massive production backlogs and come from a sector of industry that has been getting phased out all over Europe. My bank and pension fund have strict guidelines they will not invest in arms manufacturing, either all of it or just the companies involved in nuclear weapons which is all the big ones. Apparently NATO not having nuclear weapons is a priority for financial firms. All of this can be fixed with the proper government actions. Like the 1915 munitions crisis was solved: "No private interest was to be permitted to obstruct the service, or imperil the safety, of the State. Trade Union regulations must be suspended; employers' profits must be limited, skilled men must fight, if not in the trenches, in the factories; man-power must be economized by the dilution of labour and the employment of women; private factories must pass under the control of the State, and new national factories be set up. ". But as Europe is not at not at war with Russia these kinds of measures cannot be taken, if they are even possible under the varies countries' constitution.

The Finnish army has loads of artillery shells ready to go, and they also do lots of real-ammo artillery firing to get rid of the old ones about to expire. Many of the 6-month conscripts participate in this even. I don't know the exact numbers though, and Finland also sometimes destroys old artillery ammo in bulk by blowing it up somewhere remote, but still, it shouldn't be impossible to just have plenty of fresh ammo at all times and also use the old soon-expiring stuff to get some real practice for your entire army. Well, the Finnish army is also pretty gigantic compared to every other European one, so I guess that could be another constraint there. Oh man, I'm old enough to remember back around 2002 or whenever everyone was pretty optimistic about Russia and its trajectory, they got rid of the Soviet bullshit system, then they eventually stabilised their economy, democracy was seemingly working ok (bleak lol at this especially)... so why would Finland need to remain so heavily militarised? Well... yeah.

They vote "R" no matter what, and the GOP has done a good job of hammering home that they HAVE TO VOTE. Democrat voters came out to stop Trump before, but if there is one thing we've learned it's that they can be lazy, apathetic or even spiteful when it's time to go to the polling stations. The Democrats have to always fight a battle the GOP don't, and that's getting their supporters to actually vote. When you look at the demographics, it's pretty clear that the last several elections have been the Dems to loose. Just hoping that the memory of Trump's last term in office is fresh enough in voter's minds to motivate them to get out and vote, and their opinion of Biden isn't going to whitewash it.
