Growing up in Wisconsin they were pill bugs.

I know a person named Anette called Nette and this one guy (who also drove a yellow Ford Escort through the local pub's window the day after he got his driving license back) always called her Nelly. She said it was so wrong she couldn't even be cross about it. Thanks for reading. e: Actually she might be called Janette. I don't remember because everyone (except the one guy) calls her Nette.

That's how I've always known them. Apparently they are called this because it used to be believed that putting a few ground-up ones in your child's bed would help against bed-wetting. Old-timey people were weird.
