I absolutely loved Guardians 3, but one reason was that it brought definitive* closure to the characters and paid off a bunch of stuff exactly the way a final sequel is supposed to. So, not exactly a repeatable trick. (Also if you wanna talk about a nasty edge, GotG 2 had a whole comedic scene of the good guys gleefully murdering a huge amount of faceless mooks while breaking out of prison. Obviously they're "antiheroes" and one of them dies at the end but it's still the most James Gunn-y scene in the franchise by far.) * as definitive as anyone is allowed to be in the multiverse era, anyway Sir Lemming fucked around with this message at 00:21 on Feb 20, 2024 |

The Marvels is a direct sequel to the Ms Marvel tv show, a subplot from the Wandavision streaming show, and a Captain Marvel sequel that does not exist. It’s a bit of a mess.

I think sony might of had more success with their superhero films if they didn't all look like cheap garbage. Like from the first trailers you could tell they were all going to be absolute drek.

kalel posted:different how? could someone point to the element of the film that's supposed to be different from anything that's come before? Well they're definitely not talking about themes, cinematography, editing, acting, or really any kind of artistic vision. Execs don't understand any of that and consider it all interchangeable and roughly equal in value. Their brains operate in demographics and timing. "Entice these people at this time." In that way, a female driven February superhero movie is I guess "different." They just assume that if they throw about 80+ million at something, the quality bar will come naturally to meet consumer expectations. So much so they've convinced themselves that meddling like "the bad guy should die to a Pepsi sign" won't put a dent in said quality because again why are are they paying these so-called artists if they can't do their jobs??? sure okay fucked around with this message at 01:19 on Feb 20, 2024 |

I think it's amazing that Mike loves TNG so much he's watched it all this time and can notice all those errors, stuff I would never pay attention to. But I suppose he comes from an editing background and has an eye for those things. That said, I would not like RLM if every video was nitpicking tiny little details like that. That's what I've liked about them ever since the Phantom Menace review; yes sometimes they do little nitpicky details like that, but most of that review is big picture, what is fundamentally wrong with this movie structurally kind of stuff.

I would bet my life that while Madame Webb was being cast they had an extensive meeting about how Dakota Johnson had "four quadrant appeal" and at the time could not even begin to fathom that she would ever in a million years sandbag her press tour or act like a dead fish on camera. Like, you could've brought it up clear as day and they would have looked at you like you were speaking in tongues. Just beyond comprehension.
