So kawaii..
i thought the one technique the one mage used was cool

where she blocks it with the shield, but then thru the shield, does like a feedback counter that travels thru the original spell.

gives otherwise one-two panel mages more depth in 'hey this is how this mage approached the problem'

A series. That's #9 according to the title. They don't seem tagged so searching their uploads, I couldn't find #1 and there's an unnumbered one in the middle:

No, it won't. We Germans love our dumb overly literal names.

Also the way a lot of Germans think, if you present them Frieren die Elfin, they will assume she's named that because she's feeling cold.

Edit:

In fact, I got curious and went to my Crunchyroll-account. And yes, several episodes allready have a German dub. I can confirm they didn't change the names. The Official German for the main character is "Frieren die Magierin".

Yes I agree. The problem is that some of these names are too abstract and not literal enough for us German fellows. "Frieren" is a weird word for it because it describes the act of feeling cold or freezing, but in a very literal way. I think they chose the name to describe how she's cold and a bit unemotional, but picked something which implies that she constantly needs to wear several coats. On the other hand you have names like Fern (Distant), Stark (Strong), Kraft (Strength) Heiter (Jolly, or cloudless), or Himmel (Sky/ Heaven) where you can basically guess a huge part of their character from the name. Who wouldn't trust a demon called Lügner? (That's straight up "Liar".)

There are some other names which don't quite fit, but if you would want to name Frieren as on the nose as the rest, you could go with Kalt, Verschlossen or Frigide. But none of those would make great titles either.

Can someone please recommend any series that have similarly great animation in the battle scenes? The only thing I can think of that compares is the first season of One-Punch Man but I'm a noob when it comes to anime and I'm craving some cool action.
Thanks!

Thanks, I should have specified that it doesn't have to be fantasy. If you think it's fun and worthwile and has cool action scenes, that's good enough, regardless if it's contemporary, historical, fantasy, sci-fi or something else entirely.

If you liked One Punch Man, have you seen Mob Psycho? It's by the same author, and it has some really creative action. It's also a heartfelt and painfully sincere coming-of-age story about a nervous, gentle kid finding his place.

Yeah Mob Psycho has a mix of heart and really slick animated action that should appeal to people who like the vibe of this show (as well as OPM).

In terms of action animation alone, Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen are two obvious choices.

MP100 is a great recommendation but you should be aware that mushoku tensei is a story with an incredibly gross creeper protagonist who is just awful to have to deal with. Considering frieren is extremely light on overt fanservice it seems irresponsible to not mention that when comparing the two

There is basically an infinite rift between "fanservice" in Frieren and even just the thumbnails of videos you get after typing "mushoku tensei fanservice" into YouTube search.

There was that absolutely lewd scene where Frieren actually blew a kiss. I can't believe that was aired. Don't they know that CHILDREN watch the show?!? :stonk:

Edit: now that I think about it I wonder if that scene was kind of a tip of the hat to the scene in the original Dragon Ball of Emperor Pilaf blowing a kiss to Bulma and his henches being aghast at how lewd he was being.

The second episode goes even harder with the blink and miss it fights, also has a lot of anti-epilepsy filtering going on which might distract from the action.

there was a scene where the bottoms of frieren's feet were visible in the foreground as she kicked her legs on the bed, yes

i didnt notice it at the time but in hindsight it was definitely a tarantino scene

May 16, 2008

Yeah I didn't notice as I watched, other than to think that it was another time they were putting a lot of effort into animating something relatively mundane but the discourse was pretty, erm, active after that episode. It was the scene where Frieren and Fern were talking about Stark's birthday, before Frieren went to her suitcase and found the potion that dissolves clothing. Just afterwards, the scene generated one of Frieren's best reaction faces.

:smug:

Afaict their animation budget is 50% people putting on and taking off shirts and jackets, 25% fight setpieces, 20% Frieren rolling around on the bed and kicking her feet childishly, 3% mimic, and 2% the rest of the show

She picks up a new four pound grimoire every two months. It would only take 20 years to fill a standard bag of holding to capacity. That thing is some kind of epic bullshit item that she thinks is totally normal.
